Product Description
As child sexual abuse investigation and intervention in the United States has evolved over the past decade, it has become clear that no single discipline or agency can meet the needs of abused children and their families. Coordinated investigative teams, involving an alliance between a wide range of professionals - such as criminal justice professionals, social workers, medical practitioners and mental health clinicians - are needed for fact-finding, child protection and criminal prosecution.

This practical book focuses on how to design, develop, operate and maintain effective teams. It begins with examinations of how to build teams and the roles and responsibilities of the professionals involved. Investigative interviewing ... Read more

Product Description
Mental health professionals increasingly look towards problem prevention at the earliest stage of personal development, yet intervention at that stage is extremely complicated. The difficulties of balancing the conflicting rights of the child (to self-determination), the parents (to raise children in privacy and in their own manner), and of the State (to step in when parents or children fail to meet some socially desirable standard) form the basis of this volume. Its description of the interaction between mental health and legal interests, and how they impinge upon children -- areas of rapidly-growing concern to mental health workers -- represents the state-of-the-art. Four key topics are tackled: the relationship between children and their families; the health care system; the juvenile justice system; and the educational system. The result is a comprehensive survey of current empirical research, professional practice, and legal policy. In addition, the authors have given provocative suggestions on which direction the field will take -- and on which direction they think it should take. ... Read more

Product Description
What do the courts require of a clinical expert in child and adolescent psychiatry? How can clinical expert opinion be developed to improve family justice? In the decade following the Children Act 1989 two issues have emerged as indisputable. First, care proceedings are a multi-disciplinary exercise and second, child and adolescent psychiatrists are key players providing the majority of expert evidence. This book is based upon a study that is the first to analyse and digest the views and practice of these clinicians after more than a decade's experience with the Children Act.The text examines the Act itself and what courts require of experts; the institutional and contractual base from which these clinicians approach medico-legal work; their own views of their added value to proceedings; and how this field of work should be taken forward, both by the family justice system and by the clinical community. In a policy environment in which multi-disciplinary and multi-agency approaches to child abuse and neglect are vital and where evidence-based practice increasingly dictates clinical approaches, this book provides vital information for setting a new agenda for current practice and future policy developments. It addresses complex and controversial issues in this field and the text will be central to future education and training initiatives for:new and established child and adolescent psychiatrists, lawyers ,and academics in law, social work and socio-legal studies, judges, magistrates and court clerks ,guardians and court welfare officers in CAFCASS ,social workers, team managers and heads of children and families services in local authorities. Features of this volume include:a thorough examination of the Children Act 1989,detailed discussion of what the courts require of a clinical expert, discussion of how clinical opinion can be developed to improve family justice.

Product Description
The testimony of expert witnesses to inform courtroom decisions is critical if intelligent and just verdicts are to be reached. Few judges, jurors or lay witnesses possess the necessary knowledge to adequately understand the complexities of human behaviour as they relate to acts of interpersonal violence. While lay witnesses can testify to actual incidents or observations, it is the expert witness who can provide forensic significance to such evidence.

This volume clearly defines the need for and role of expert witnesses in litigation. The author demystifies the process, and provides practical guidance on preparing and presenting expert testimony. In so doing, he will assist courts to more accurately assess and weigh eviden ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars never received my orde
Ive written the company and attempted to follow FedEx but no luck. The charge has already hit my credit card several weeks ago but still no book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential guide
This book is a must-read for anyone who employs or cross-examines expert witnesses. And, frankly, anyone who might be called upon to give expert witness testimony would be well-advised to read it as well.

Stern's bookis thorough, covering every aspect of expert witness testimony, and is fullof specific ideas that can be applied in court. Best of all, it's far fromthe tedious read of the typical legal text. Stern mixes entertainingreal-life examples, and a sense of humor, into his informativetext.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
As a mental health professional dealing with court issues both for myself and colleagues, this book has been a great resource. The information has enabled us to enter a courtroom with much more confidence and much less anxiety. Mr. Stern's work has helped to make sense of an often frustratingand confusing experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worried about expert testimony? This will help.
This is a jewel of a book. Mr. Stern follows his own advice: know your literature, know your audience, and speak English. As a forensic nurse and educator, I would recommend this book to any examiner who is about to facethe rigors of courtroom testimony.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Reference Information
Mr. Stern presents a well assembled, logical, and (even) entertaining collection of information for anybody that is touched by any aspect of child abuse litigation. The book is well rounded enough to be useful forstudents as well as field practitioners. I'd like to see him tackle otherareas of criminal law and (especially) the case preparation aspects. ... Product Description

Without question, the most difficult and complex crime facing America’s investigators and prosecutors is the crime of child abuse. The limited language abilities of these victims, the rarity of traditional physical evidence, and the skepticism of the public makes the successful handling of these cases a daunting task.

To assist investigators and prosecutors, APRI’s National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse—the nation’s premiere trainer of child abuse prosecutors and investigators—presents the Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abuse, Third Edition. Readers of this manual will receive practical, common sense assistance in handling child abuse cases from the initial report to the closing argument at trial. Appendices on the enclosed CD-ROM include hundreds of sample motions and other legal documents that can be adapted to the jurisdiction of individual readers. Now in its Third Edition, the manual contains the latest in case law and research on nearly every facet of child sexual abuse, physical abuse and neglect. This is the only manual on the market specifically geared to front line investigators and prosecutors called upon to handle abuse cases.

Child abuse prosecutors and investigators, child protection attorneys, social workers, psychologists, and forensic interviewers, whether new to the field or experts with years of experience, will find this manual invaluable to continued efforts at protecting children in need. University criminal justice and social work departments and law schools will also find this a much-needed addition to course readings and library collections.

From the author: Two thirds of Americans are considered overweight, while 25% are obese. Obesity is the most common health problem facing U.S. children today, regardless of ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic status. Lack of preplanning for the hospitalized obese child threatens both patient and caregiver safety, and is becoming a serious consideration in pediatric nursing. Some of the challenges in mobilizing larger children with an eye to preventing caregiver injury and promoting patient safety are explored. Equipment, policy formation, education, and legal considerations are outlined within this context. A case study is presented herein.
