Editorial Review

Product Description
The content and status of the precautionary principle remains highly debated and various questions arise, such as its status as a rule of customary international law, including its scope, addressee, triggering threshold, precautionary action measures, and eventually limits of the principle. Thus, this book examines the present state of affairs regarding the implementation of the principle in the law of the sea in different sectors, e.g. pollution of the marine environment, conservation and management of living marine resources, and transboundary transports of radioactive and hazardous wastes. In addition, it extracts evidence of its acceptance as part of customary international law, and indicates that below this level there is also an emerging practice of international law of applying the precautionary principle in a common way. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
When Paul Reuter's "Introduction au Droit des Traites" was first published in 1972, it became regarded as a classic, and was followed by an English language version in 1985. Shortly before his death, Reuter revised and updated the 1985 version, taking into account the newly adopted 1986 Vienna Convention on treaties between states and international organizations, as well as recent developments in international codification efforts, undertaken under the auspices of the United Nations International Law Commission, with which he had been very closely associated for many years. One notable feature of the English version is the considerably enlarged section on the law of treaties and international responsibility at the end of Chapter Four. The extensive notes at the end of each chapter provide not only a basic set of references but also a great amount of other stimulating and thought-provoking material. This book should be of interest to students, lawyers and all those who wish to become more familiar with the legal aspect of treaties, the basic instrument for international relations. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Dreams v. Reality
Good:Walton provides some good advice for focusing your resume and cover letters to highlight your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

Bad:This book has an enormous amount of detritus. The 1400 pages can easily be reduced to about 50 pages of useful information without losing anything critical in the process.

Ugly:The cheerleader attitude of the author is insulting to anyone with an undergraduate degree let alone a law degree. The legal field is equivalent to the social clubs at Harvard. If you don't have the right credentials, you are not getting in.More bluntly, if you didn't go to a top 14 law school or didn't graduate in the top 20% of your class from a lesser school (read: all schools outside the top 14) then you are probably not going to find meaningful employment in the legal field unless you go into solo practice. Its a sobering fact, that the author tries to minimize by claiming grades won't preclude you from getting work as an associate. She supports her argument by various anecdotes about individuals who were able to beat the system.I don't doubt the veracity of her examples, but Walton conveniently ignores the role fortune played in each of her anecdotes. It wasn't a "guerilla tactic" that assisted the individuals in her anecdotes in finding legal employment. It was being at the right place, at the right time.

Verdict:Read the sections on cover letters and resumes.Network like crazy.Hope that lady luck shines on your job search.

4-0 out of 5 stars Positive Reinforcement for a stressful time.
There aren't many books that by themselves are going to get you a job. The economy just isn't great...which sucks for us new law school grads.

That said, this book really does give some decent advice; some of it I knew, but some I really didn't. Even more than that, it's a positive reinforcement to keep looking even when nothing is panning out. I especially like the chapter on rejection, because Walton is right, other career books don't talk about it. (I've read quite a few). I also like how she doesn't really suggest doing outlandish things like going firms and handing out your resume in person (maybe she does and I haven't got to that point? It's a long book).

I could see why some people are turned off by the tone, and certainly some of those "smart human trick" stories are corny, but personally, I like it better than all the other "Law school is a scam; Kill self" stuff I read on the internet these days.

It was worth the $ [...] I spent on it (and trust me, I barely have $ [...] to spend- I am after all unemployed).

I only gave it 4 stars because it alone isn't going to get you a job, and you'll probably benefit from reading other job aid books (ie, resume writing, cover letter writing) because hey, the chapters addressing these things have be expounded upon in other books, and you are better off with more knowledge than less. Finally this book really doesn't help with non-legal job searches (but then again, it doesn't purport to).

5-0 out of 5 stars Must reading for folks on the legal job market
I met Kimm after she came to my law school to speak, and she sent me a copy of her new book after I told her how I used the old edition to land a summer associate position after my 1L year. As thanks for the book and all the advice in it, I write this review.

The best recommendation I can give is that this book worked for me, during this vexing legal job market. The old edition helped me land a summer associate position. The new edition helped me deal with not receiving an offer from my summer employer and land an offer from another quality employer. Thanks, Kimm! You truly are a "job goddess."

Other reviewers suggest that whether this book works (or doesn't work) depends on who you are in terms of grades and schools. I graduated in the top 25% of my class from a top 25 law school. Certainly, grades and schools matter. However, this book is comprehensive ("I'm a 1L." "I Go to Not-Harvard." "I Go to a Distinguished School" "Help! My Grades Stink!") and imminently usable. Thus, it should have great value for anyone.

I used the sections that were relevant to my job search when they were relevant. Think your career services office stinks? Find out how to get the most out of your counselors. I thought mine were fantastic and think of them as friends. When I had an interview, I read (and reread) the chapter on interviews. After an interview, I followed Kimm's suggestions regarding thank yous. Not sure of what to wear, Kimm's got answers. Not sure of what to say and, maybe more importantly, what not to say in an interview, Kimm's got answers. Curious what matters most to this relatively small firm in a smaller market? Kimm's got answers. Clueless about what questions to ask after receiving your first legal job offer? Kimm's got answers. And it's not just Kimm's answers. They are the answers given by career counselors and hiring partners from all over the country. That is, Kimm's got loads of experience and connections, and this book is well researched.

Obviously, I am biased. I am writing this review after receiving (and accepting) an offer for a fantastic legal job. But I used Kimm's book extensively to get that job. Just so I don't appear too one-sided, some of the "career limiting move" stories offered by Kimm were almost unbelievable. I don't think the stories are made up (you couldn't make some of these stories up), and they are funny. But the stories have more entertainment value that practical value because this reader thought, "who are these people, and how could they have possibly done these things?"

To summarize, then, my biggest compliment for the book: it worked. Other positives: usable and comprehensive. Downsides: some parts are more entertaining than helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me land a job!
I highly recommend this book for new attorneys looking for a job.Soon after I graduated, the legal market plummeted.I earned high grades in law school and completed several internships.Despite all of this, I was unable to compete with other experienced job applicants. Two years after graduation, I began to get frantic about my prospects.Walton's suggestions absolutely work!I volunteered and became active in my local and state bar associations.I attended several CLEs where I met attorneys. At one CLE, I reconnected with a supervisor from my internship. She later provided me with a professional reference.I worked closely with my school's career services office to prepare for interviews and refine my resume.I used Walton's suggestions to meet attorneys in my geographic area.I even hand delivered my resume to firms on two occasions. This tactic landed me an interview at one of the firms.I wish I had not hesitated to purchase this book last year because once I began actively employing her strategies, I saw immediate results. One month and three interviews later, I am employed as an attorney. This book is worth every dime!

5-0 out of 5 stars It isn't easy...but it works.
The Guerrilla Tactics approach to getting a legal job worked like a charm. I know, because my employer specifically cited things I did from the book in telling me why I got an offer.

What Guerrilla Tactics asks of you isn't easy, but it offers such a variety of angles of attack that you cannot do everything the book says and NOT get a good job. The philosophy of the book is actually very sophisticated, but it is very digestible. Kimm Alayne Walton's writing style is perfect for this genre of book.

Buy it! It is worth it. ... Read more

Product Description
In recent years, international commercial arbitration procedures have made great strides to bring into line different traditions of law and practice. But considerable problems remain. The aim of this new Dossier by the ICC Institute of World Business Law, is to give the reader a thorough picture of the practical issues raised by the conflicts arising when there is more than one arbitration and when commercial arbitrations run in parallel with state legal procedures. This is the third in a series of Dossiers from the Institute. ... Read more
