Product Description
Diplomarbeit, die am 01.06.1996 erfolgreich an einer Universität in Deutschland eingereicht wurde. Abstract: Leprosy, a communicable disease, is one of the most feared and stigmatised diseases in the world. This disease is an important cause of permanent and progressive disability when it is not treated in an early stage. Leprosy control is an instrument to find and treat all existing leprosy cases in a certain area, to bring them under treatment in order to prevent the disabling consequences of the disease. It is essential to consider the cultural, the social, the political, and the economical aspects in the context of leprosy in Nepal to meet the real need of each individual patient. Due to the agricultural background of almost 93 % of Nepal's population, this field needs special attention as a tool for adequate rehabilitation. This paper aims to provide a solution providing a concept for agricultural leprosy rehabilitation. In chapter five rehabilitation strategies for clients with agricultural background are lined out regarding the specific situation in Nepal. Possibilities for the integration of agricultural topics in occupational therapy are discussed, as well as agricultural business creation suitable for disabled clients. Chapter six contains two curricula. The first curriculum deals with a kitchen garden training in occupational therapy and the second curriculum with a curriculum for a beekeeping training as a business creation measure.Table of Contents: |List of Figures|iv |List of Pictures|iv |List of Maps|iv |Table|iv |List of Abbreviations|v |Acknowledgements and Preface|vi 1.|INTRODUCTION|1 2.|HISTORICAL BACKGROUND|2 3.|MEDICAL ASPECTS OF LEPROSY|4 3.1|Prevalence|4 3.2|Epidemiology|5 3.3|Treatment|6 3.4|Leprosy Control|6 4.|LEPROSY IN NEPAL|8 4.1|The Country|8 4.1.1|Geography|8 4.1.2|People|9 4.1.3|Government and Administration|10 4.1.4|Economy|11 4.2|The Context of Leprosy in Nepal|12 4.2.1|Cultura ... Product Description
A practical guide to the many simple things that can be done - by health workers and patients alike - to prevent the development of disabilities in patients with leprosy. Addressed to peripheral health personnel, the manual concentrates on the various conditions leading to disability and deformity that can be arrested if action is taken at an early stage. To this end, readers are given extensive practical information on the signs to look for, the questions to ask, and the tests to perform in order to recognize these conditions at the earliest possible stage and take appropriate action. Preventive measures described consist of simple treatments, devices, exercises, and behavioral changes that are easy and inexpensive as well as highly effective. Details range from step-by-step instructions for preparing a finger splint from plastic tubing, through simple tests for determining when leg muscles are weakened, to illustrated exercises that patients can perform at home. Throughout the book, numerous tables, charts, checklists, and some 100 illustrations are used to help readers absorb information and acquire the full range of skills.
The core of the manual consists of chapters focused on the specific actions needed to prevent disability and deformity in patients with insensitive hands and feet and to preserve nerve function. Each richly illustrated chapter provides detailed information on the assessment of patients, the recognition of normal and abnormal conditions, the assignment of risk status, and the specifics of management.

Product Description
The commonest peripheral nerve disease in man is leprosy. It is estimated that over 12 million people suffer from this disease and about a fourth of them have some deformity. However, the majority of deformities seen in leprosy are not peculiar to the disease. They are also seen in other peripheral neuropathies, including trauma, and systemic diseases like diabetes. The principles of management and surgical treatment of deformities secondary to peripheral nerve disease are very much the same, no matter what the cause. This comprehensive volume on the subject will therefore be of value to surgeons all over the world, not just in countries with a high incidence of leprosy. Three major chapters of the book deal with correction of the deformities of the face, the hand, and the foot. Three other chapters cover related aspects such as pathogenesis and pathology, the skin and peripheral nerves, complications and secondary disorders, complementary changes and rehabilitation.Illustrations are provided wherever relevant and useful. The authors' combined experience dates back to the fifties, and they have thus been able to overview the development of reconstructive surgery in leprosy from its very inception. The result is a fund of information and practical knowledge which will be useful to all surgeons working with patients with peripheral nerve disease. ...
