5-0 out of 5 stars Get the tissues ready!!
I read this book in 1 day because I could not put it down! From the 1st sentence, the author captivated me and made me feel part of his family through the end.The story is heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time.It is extremely well-written and shows the family with all of their flaws as well as their great strengths.I could not stop crying while reading this book and recommend it as long as you are prepared to leave a piece of your heart with the author and his family.

3-0 out of 5 stars ERIC'S LAST ROUND-UP
Eric Pringle, (1974 - 1981) was a bright, engaging boy who loved candy, cowboys, television and superheroes. He loved making up stories and playing with dogs.Creative and artistic, Eric loved to draw and was quite adept at drawing detailed cowboys. He enjoyed a good joke on his brother Michael who was 2 years his senior. In short, Eric (nicknamed "E") was a normal boy.

At 4, Eric was diagnosed with leukemia. His distraught parents and brother sought ways to make the treatments Eric underwent more palatable. One clever method they devised was to tell him that his medications were like "superheroes" that warded off the evil illness.Michael, to his credit continued treating Eric like a healthy sibling and the pair displayed refreshingly normal bouts of sibling rivalry.

I was not too fond of the author and I didn't like the way he would brush Michael off when Michael expressed resentment over the extra attention Eric was receiving. In one memorable scene, the author tells the resentful Michael to "shut up" and that he went outside to get away from the boy.Ouch!I also didn't like the way he criticized Michael for describing a nightmare he had had shortly after Eric's death in October, 1981.Nightmares were a normal response to the tragedy and trauma this child had undergone.A bright, imaginative child, it was only natural that this young boy's subconscious would conjure up frightful images after losing a brother.

The part that really soured me on the author was when he told a story with Eric as the hero and Michael as the villain.Although Michael outwardly took it in stride, one could not help but wonder what message such a story sent to Michael.I thought it was cruel to make him the villain in the story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pringle captivates with a smile

He enjoyed his "Any-M's," those miniature candy-coated chocolates which refuse to melt in your hands. He laughed with his brother and parents, often dressing up as a cowboy before galloping around the house, or giving mock-interviews to his dad's tape recorder. He smiled, when smiles were at a premium.Eric Pringle was a young boy battling leukemia, and spinal taps weren't as much fun as Star Wars figures--but he smiled anyway.

Terry Pringle's THIS IS THE CHILD is Eric's story, revealed through his father's emotional exploration of a tight Texas family. From a rattlesnake coiled in the dining room of a new house to countless I-Spy games during countless journeys to countless doctors in Houston, "E" takes it all in stride.

Here, as in subsequent novels THE PREACHER'S BOY and A FINE TIME TO LEAVE ME, Pringle is adept at depicting the minutiae of family life--the television shows (and everything else) that kids bicker over; the kids (and everything else) that adults bicker over.He i ... Read more

Product Description

Better therapy of acute leukemias depends ultimately on better understanding of the distinction between leukemic and normal progenitor cells. Thus, several chapters in this volume describe current knowledge of acute leukemia biology and discuss new classification systems that have arisen consequent to emerging insights into pathogenesis. Treatment has also improved for particular types of acute leukemia. Given our intention that the book be useful to clinicians, we pay particular attention to these advances, to management of acute leukemia in general, and to development of new therapies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A compelling and needed story
This is a well-written, moving narrative about one family's struggle with childhood cancer. The negative review for this book is puzzling, if not simply a plug for another book. It criticizes this one for not covering medical protocols in sufficient depth, which is unfair because the author does not purport to do that. I agree with the previous reviewer. A focus on medical details misses the forest for the trees. Protocols change, and are mostly the province of doctors. Which is not to say one shouldn't pay attention to the medicine and become reasonably educated on treatment options. But understanding the course of treatment is just one aspect of the ordeal, and not the most important when you consider the human beings involved. Hope, attitude, living and enjoying life; such choices are absolutely within the families' control, and they can make all the difference. Conveying that is the purpose of this gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wise and warm guide
Cynthia Krumme's book was not meant as a guide for parents about what kind of treatment to expect. Of course the description of treatment is out of date, but the treatment varies from year to year and from country to country anyway. Krumme wrote about how to cope with a very ill child, how to treat his or her siblings, how to enjoy life in spite of everything awful that was happening, and how to let the child enjoy it. And all this is timeless. It is best to get a description of treatment from the doctor who is dealing with the child and to read as much as possible about how other people coped with similar situation. And Cynthia Krumme is a very wise, warm guide.

2-0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt saga, but dated from a medical standpoint.
As the mother of a daughter with leukemia, I found this a moving tale of one family's struggle with leukemia, but for those whose children have been recently diagnosed (1998-99), keep in mind that the author describesmedical protocols, procedures, even family activities that are out-of-datewith current philosophy. Many of the family's experiences are no longercommon or allowed by responsible pediatric oncologists. For this reason, the book may be misleading and inaccurate to some families. A much betterguide to leukemia is Nancy Keene's book, "Childhood Leukemia." ... Read more

Product Description

Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), is the most common form of leukemia in adults. AML is a deadly form of malignancy, the prognosis for which has not improved in the last two decades. More importantly, it is a malignancy that is seen in older adults, therefore the number of cases is likely to rise as the population ages. Over the past 15 years, genetic mechanisms underlying AML have begun to unfold. Additional research in this area has helped identify key components and characteristics. Consequently, targeted therapy of AML is receiving much attention. It is the hope of researchers that as with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and the drug, Gleevec, a targeted therapy for AML will be discovered.
