3-0 out of 5 stars Good Jumping Off Point
This book has a lot of lessons that are good jumping off points, or good to incorporate into other units of study. It is probably better suited for public library childrens' services or SLMS that don't get to collaborate as much as they'd like. I bought it when I was first starting out as a School Library Media Specialist, because I was worried about starting Year One with (what I thought was)a blank slate! Better yet, grab some copies of Mailbox to give you some good ideas-- or remind you of things that you wanted to work on!

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb and handy resource
Part of the "Stretchy Library Lessons" series developed by educator and library media specialist Pat Miller, Library Skills is a "user friendly" collection of ready-made lessons for school and community librarians who need to teach young ones how to take advantage of library's resources, yet who have little time to prepare. Ready-made worksheets suitable for photocopying, and 10 lesson plans that cover basic library skills, the parts of a book, the Dewey Decimal System, genres and much, much more make Library Skills a superb and handy resource which is ideal for homeschooling parents as well. Also highly recommended are two companion workbooks by Pat Miller in her "Stretchy Library Lessons" series: Reading Activities (157950082X,...) and Research Skills (1579500846,...). ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good primer for new library professionals or graduate students
This is a useful text covering three facets of information, 1)the history of the development of library instruction in schools; 2)the research and implications as it applies to searching for information; and 3)trends, models, and strategies for teaching information literacy in schools. The last facet, being the largest in volume, is naturally the most practical; and it will be the reason to select this book. The research presented includes old and new ideas and conclusions that build upon one another to form a cohesive and sensible approach.

On a more personal note, I found the material very helpful to get up to speed in an area that can be neglected in public librarianship training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview
Pickering-Thomas' book, Information Literacy and Information Skills Instruction: Applying Research to Practice in the School Library Media Center is an excellent overview of current theory and practice in the field of Information Literacy Education. She presents a concise, easy to read format that any information professional or student will refer to often. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The purpose of "The Library-Classroom Partnership" is to assist library teachers and classroom teachers to effectively use the library and its resources as an extension of the classroom. As in the earlier edition, the lessons included in this book stress the library media skills needed by individuals for lifelong learning. Long after adults have forgotten a particular fact of history or the techniques of balancing an equation, they continue to use library skills to answer their questions and to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It has been well documented that the skills taught in a library are most effectively learned within the context of classroom work. To this end, the librarian and the teacher must form a working team to take each other's ideas and develop them into effective learning experiences for students. The authors have incorporated the teaching of those library media skills with every discipline taught in the school. Through these lessons, students will realize that research and reference are a vital part of the learning process, complementing and enriching every subject. The eleven disciplines (English, mathematics, social studies, science, art, music, home and careers, technology, physical education, health, and foreign language) normally taught in the junior high and middle schools are addressed in this work. To be included, a lesson must be a learning experience in both the library skills and the subject areas. Each unit has been cooperatively developed using the expertise of the school library media specialist and the subject teacher. All lessons have been implemented successfully in the junior high and middle school environment. This revised and expanded edition of "The Library Classroom- Partnership" also deals with technology and the changing economic and social conditions affecting public schools. It includes a new section on reading enrichment as well as instruction in accessing information electronically. ... Read more
