Product Description
"Though I was well aware that Albert Schweitzer preached a great deal both before and after he became a physician, I never encountered any of his sermons until I was privileged to read the present collection prior to publication. What I find in this increases my sense of wonder, though it does not increase my surprise. It pleases me to find that like other speakers and writers, the famous missionary doctor preached many of his ideas before they were cast into essay form, thus following the experimental method...On the whole the sermons seem contemporary...Very early in the twentieth century, he understood that Christianity is not a merely spiritual religion and that the popular arguments against missions are superficial ones...What pleases me most about the new publication is its revelation of the author's deep personal piety..." -- D Elton Trueblood (from the Foreword). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading!
In a marvellously inspiring way, Albert Schweizer's sermons address issues such as how to deal with suffering in the world, how to treat animals, and how to treat the people around you.

This book is a cornerstone in my collection on Christianity and ethics.

2-0 out of 5 stars Genuine But Dull
This was my introduction to Albert Schweitzer's work, and I wasn't muchimpressed. The book contains 15 very, very short sermons that he preachedto his congregation at his church in Africa, where he was a missionary. Assermons go these are pretty good -- there is a minumum of dogmatism and agreat deal of ethics, as might be expected based upn Schweitzer's life, butalthough they did seem very genuine, they also seemd dull and notparticularly original. In general, sermons have never impressed me verymuch, as I have always favoured vital religious experience and action toempty words, but Schweitzer -- to his credit -- was one of the few whoactually lived what he preached, which is a welcome contrast to this day ofSwaggart's and Graham's who spend their time waggling their fingers at uswithout lifting a finger to help their fellow human beings. Like mostChristians, Schweitzer has an absurd notion that Christianity is superiorto all other religions and thus he has no problems in trying to convertothers without looking to find the beauty or truth in the native religions, but due to the nature of his faith, that is perhaps unavoidable even if itis deplorable. The sermons are very low-brow, leading one to think that hewas inclined to try to reach the "common man" than to push histheology. He steers clear of superstition, which is also a welcome plus, but this collection still left me cold. Might be good for devotionalreading, but there is little of lasting intellectual value here. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but....
The ideas weren't any better than what you typically find in science books as "end of the chapter" labs. They're very basic and don't do a good job ofexplaining the science in depth enough to handle questions kids may have properly. If you just want ideas, go for it, but its not really worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Ideas
As a teacher of three children at home and a former middle school teacher I bought this book. It has been a great addition to our learning. It is a series of hands on activities that are simple, cheap and use a sandwhich bag.

The one problem with this book was that it does not have enough ideas. It is very thin. The other problem and directly related to the first is that there might only be one experiment for the rock cycle, one experiment for human body etc. It would be nice to see more lessons.

If I had to pick two, I'd pick the other two in the series- soda bottle science and coffee can science.

Well worth the money.
Enjoy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars a waste of time
Australian politicians and soldiers have intermixed careers ever since the fomation of colonial volunteer forces. The interplay of such roles forms a fascinating part of Australia's military history - indeed the SouthAustralian Minister responsible for Defence was a Sergeant in the Militia.Several interesting occurances happened in his fulfillment of theseroles!

This book, unfortanately, is a confused overview of the subject. It begins merely as a description of some of these colonial soldierpoliticians and ends up merely listing ex-servicemen who went on to becomepoliticians, with a sidebar look at some of our vice-regalservicemen.

There is no analysis of the role & influence theseex-servicement brought to their positions and no attempt to place them intothe overall context of government decision making. The role of the RSL inAustralia has been influential, but there is no indication how this wasassisted by the ex-servicemen politicians.

It was such a disappointingbook that I gave it away to the 2nd hand shop. ... Read more

Product Description
The traditional view of motor systems as a linear chain of elements switched on and off by command neurons has become increasingly difficult to maintain in the face of accumulating evidence against the existence of command elements. So far, however, the general formulation of an alternative approach has been lacking. This book, by summarising the evidence against the linear approach to motor systems, argues forcefully against it. Analyses are presented of motor systems ranging from the lobster stomatogastric system through molluscan systems, leech movement, insect singing and locomotion, fish and amphibian behaviour, to goal-directed a movements in primates and volitional movements in humans. Comparison of these motor systems reveal the existence of some general principles underlying motor control and behavioural choice such that motor systems appear generally to be parallel, distributed processing networks. By discussing the treatment of motor ... Read more

Product Description
In July 2005, the National Academies released the report "Biological Science and Biotechnology in Russia: Controlling Diseases and Enhancing Security". The report offered a number of recommendations that could help restore Russia's ability to join with the United States and the broader international community in leading an expanded global effort to control infectious diseases. A proposed bilateral intergovernmental commission could play a pivotal role toward that end as cooperation moves from assistance to partnership. The report proposed the establishment of two model State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Centers in Russia, more focused support of competitively selected Russian research groups as centers of excellence, the promotion of investments in biotechnology niches that are well suited for Russian companies, and expanded opportunities for young scientists to achieve scientific leadership positions in Russia. Also, the report highlighted the importance of U.S. programs that support the integration of former Soviet defense scientists with civilian researchers who had not been involved in military-related activities. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars One fatal flaw...
Problem based learning is a great idea and this book provides many great examples (or problems) for class use. However, the authors - for reasons that defy explanation - fail to provide answers to ANY of the problem sets. They instead send you on a wild goose chase to external sources.Phrases like "consult your textbook"are irritating; in other cases, they refer you to books only a college would have and that would take you hours of work to review.I have a PhD in biology an am happy to find my own answers, but for $58 for a thin, 160 page book, the least they could of have done was save me some work and provided some answer sets.

5-0 out of 5 stars PBL made easy

Tools of the Ancient Greeks: A Kid's Guide to the History & Science of Life in Ancient Greece (Tools of Discovery series)
This is a great book that can be digested bit by bit by a younger reader and read quickly by an older child. Both will find it interesting. We plan to be in Greece for over 2 months and this will be a useful tool fo them to learn more and use their imagination about Greece.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent teaching aid! Homeschool alert!
THis was a favorite of my daughter's. Especially the recipe for Baklava! IT was delicious.I purchased both as support material for our study of Ancient Rome and Greece and enjoyed them volumes. The information was presented well and the activities were worthwhile. Highly recommend!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource
What a great resource to stimulate young minds!I've got girls in 5th and 7th grades, and have had a hard time finding reference material that interests and challenges them. This book does both. I wish there were more like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brings History Alive for Kids
What a nifty book! Not only do kids learn about the inventions of the Greeks, but how those discoveries help us today. Kids learn about Greek gods, philosophy, architecture, science, math, medicine, art, and even about the start of the Olympics. The "words to know" (ie: Sparta and acropolis) and the quiz questions (ie: What were the three uses of olive oil in ancient Greece?) sprinkled throughout the book invite dialogue, and the 15 activities bring the book's information alive. My favorites? Make your own baklava and write a letter in Greek. This book is interesting, well written, and engaging. A must-read for any kid (or adult!) wanting to immerse themselves in Greek history. ... Read more

Product Description

To date, the mainstream literature on Mexican politics has said little about women, even though their participation as formal political actors has increased dramatically in the past fifteen years. Somewhat surprisingly, the political participation of women, although well documented in other Latin American countries, has been neglected in the case of Mexico.Women’s Participation in Mexican Political Life is a collection of thirteen original essays which pulls together the expertise of well-known Mexicanist, Latin Americanist, and gender scholars from Mexico, the U.S., and Europe. The essays analyze the participation of women in different arenas of the Mexican political system: elected positions, appointed positions, grassroots leaders, voters, non-governmental organizations, unions, and so on. Altogether, the analysis includes essays on women from the various political parties, from different regions of the country, and from different levels of government (federal, state, local), making the book a truly representative sample of issues that affect the participation of women in Mexican political life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book to interest your child in Roman history
Great book! It's lavishly illustrated, and has plenty of oddball facts that most kids will find cool--such as the fact that "German women often provided hair for use in wigs and hairpieces. Their hair was preferred, probably because it was blonds in color" (p 83).And it isn't just information about history or gods and goddesses. The book also includes activities for your child--like how to make a mosaic, or build Roman ruins.

Roman numerals are introduced in a simple, well illustrated fashion so any child will be able to understand. The chapter on "Remarkable Feats in Engineering and Technology" is a terrific introduction to children to the concept of engineering.

Recommended.

As a home educator, I'm always looking for books that will draw my kids into the time period that they are studying. Tools of the Ancient Romans does this perfectly. Through reading and hands-on activities, kids will gain an understanding of what life was like in ancient Rome. The main text is full of information that kids will find interesting, and peppered throughout are sidebars offering further detail. Each activity relates to the text as kids try their hand at making projects such as an abacus, an amphora or a Roman medal. These activities are great for letting all kids delve into the ancient Roman era, but especially good for kinesthetic learners, as they can get their hands involved in learning! ... Read more
