Product Description
Ireland, a land best known for Celtic music, rolling green hills, and welcoming people, has a seafaring side that is equally enchanting. With almost 2,000 miles of coastline, the sea has beckoned many Irish countrymen. Irish sailors have traveled from their island home in search of wealth and adventure. Since the fifth century, Irish lighthouses have been guiding these seafarers home.

This lavishly illustrated and lively book is a tour of thirty-six beautiful and distinctive Irish lighthouses. These technically efficient structures are described in detail, including the history for each light and descriptions of the surrounding areas.

This guide contains: location and geography of the land where each beacon stands, historical anecdotes and accounts of adventures at sea, directions to each light, breathtaking color photographs.

Irish Lighthouses is an excellent memento of Ireland's lighthouse legacy, for visitors and lighthouse aficionados alike. (8 1/2 x 10 3/4, 320 pages, color photos, map) ... Read more

Product Description
Richard Taylor was a lighthouse technician for 44 years during which he visited and worked on all 86 Irish lighthouses. He is uniquely qualified to write this personal history-cum-guide. He describes the lighthouses and their history and captures the unique way of life of the lighthouse keepers and their families, largely unknown and ignored until now and, with automation, sadly no longer extant. The result is a book embellished with anecdotes and hair-raising tales of getting on to lighthouses, time spent there, often weeks on end, and getting off lighthouses. So starting with the Baily in Howth the author takes us in a clockwise direction around the coast of the 32 counties. ... Read more

Excerpt: Lighthouse of Alexandria -Sheraton Hotels in Batumi,GeorgiaPharos was a small island just off the coast of Alexandria. It was linked to the mainland by a man-made connection named the Heptastadion, which thus formed one side of the city's harbor. The tower erected there guided mariners at night, through its fire and reflective mirrors, as well as being a landmark by day. Legend holds that Ptolemy forbade Sostratus to put his name on his work. But the architect left the following inscription on the base's walls nonetheless: "Sostratus of Cnidus, son of Dexiphanes, to the Gods protecting those upon the sea" (original Greek inscription: " ") These words were hidden under a layer of plaster, on top of which was chiseled another inscription honoring Ptolemy the king as builder of the Pharos. After centuries the plaster wore away, revealing the name of Sostratus. The Lighthouse of AlexandriaThe lighthouse was badly damaged in the earthquake of 956, then again in 1303 and 1323. The fullest description of it comes from the Arab traveller Abou Haggag Youssef Ibn el-Andaloussi, who visited the structure in 1165 AD. His description runs: There are ancient claims the light from the lighthouse could be seen from up to 29 miles (47 km) away. Unconfirmed legends claim the light from Pharos could burn enemy ships before they reached shore. Constructed from large blocks of light-coloured stone, the tower was made up ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=17724 ... Read more

Excerpt: The English Channel (French: , the "sleeve") is an arm of the Atlantic Ocean that separates Great Britain from northern France, and joins the North Sea to the Atlantic. It is about 560 km (350 mi) long and varies in width from 240 km (150 mi) at its widest, to only 34 km (21 mi) in the Strait of Dover. It is the smallest of the shallow seas around the continental shelf of Europe, covering an area of some 75,000 km (29,000 sq mi). Map of the English Channel The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the English Channel as follows: On the West. A line joining Isle Vierge ( ) to Lands End ( ). On the East. The Southwestern limit of the North Sea . The Strait of Dover, at the Channel's eastern end is also its narrowest point, while its widest point lies between Lyme Bay and the Gulf of Saint Malo near the midpoint of the waterway. It is relatively shallow, with an average depth of about 120 m (390 ft) at its widest part, reducing to a depth of about 45 m (148 ft) between Dover and Calais. From there eastwards the adjoining North Sea continues to shallow to about 26 m (85 ft) in the Broad Fourteens where it lies over the watershed of the former land bridge between East Anglia and the Low Countries. It reaches a maximum depth of 180 m (590 ft) in the submerged valley of Hurds Deep, 30 mi (48 km) west-northwest of Guernsey. The eastern region along the French coast between Cherbourg and the mouth of the Seine river at Le Havre is freque...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9230 ... Read more

Product Description
"The Dominican Republic is the land Columbus loved best" runs the advertising slogan. In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the explorer's arrival on the island of Hispaniola, the government has spent a reported US$40 millions on building a bizarre commemorative lighthouse. In the process, it has bull-dozed the homes of thousands of slumdwellers to clear the memorial site. "Beyond the Lighthouse" looks at a country where extreme poverty exists alongside a booming tourist industry. Where workers from neighbouring Haiti are literally enslaved in an almost bankrupt sugar industry. Where political leaders date back to a dictatorship which ended more than 30 years ago. In its comprehensive analysis of the Dominican Republic's turbulent history and its current political crisis, "Beyond the Lighthouse" exposes the inequality and corruption which lubricate the country's economy. It explores the complex and tragic relations between Dominicans and Haitians and the ambiguous role played by the United States. The author also assesses the popular movement which is challenging a decaying political system and proposing a radical new form of democratic participation. ... Read more
