Good cozy
4th in the Lighthouse series featuring Alex Winston and his family owned Hatteras West Inn, a lighthouse in the Blue Ridge Mountains.Alex loves his lighthouse and inn more than anything else in the world, and so when he is able to re-open the Dual Keeper's quarters after they had burned down, it was a celebration.Elkton Falls being the small town it is, the re-opening was also the opportunity for the local mayoral candidates to schmooze, but to top it all off, Alex's best friend, Mor, announces his engagement at the party.But when the party's over and the parking lot empties, Mor finds the body of his fiancée's ex-husband in his truck.Alex decides that he needs to get to the bottom of this in order to insure his best friend's future happiness.When one of the mayoral candidates also dies, Alex is determined to connect them and get to the bottom of the mysteries.A definite cozy series and fairly uninvolved cast of characters, but an easy and enjoyable read.I actually prefer Myers' other two series - the candle-making series and the soap-making series, but his original series is pleasant, as well.

Another great mystery in the lighthouse series
Alex Winston runs The Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse.After renovations, the Dual Keeper's quarters are finally ready for occupancy.As part of the opening festivities, they hold a debate between two locals running for mayor.

Mor, Alex's best friend, and Emma are finally going to be married.When Mor goes out to his truck after the festivities, he finds a dead man in the driver's seat.Once it is determined the dead man is Emma's abusive ex-husband, Mor and Emma become the prime suspects.Then when one of the mayoral candidates is found dead, Emma is no longer suspected.

Alex is trying to convince his co-worker Elise that they should be a couple.Things aren't looking too good in that department.He is also trying to figure out who killed these people.He believes the murders are linked.Can he find the killer without putting himself in danger?

I love this series.I would love to vacation at The Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse if I could.Alex is a fabulous character.His love of the Inn and lighthouse really comes through.Being a lighthouse lover myself, I feel a real connection.I also really enjoy Elise.The tension between these two characters is good, but I really hope they are able to come together some day.

The other characters in town really add to the story.The author has caught the feeling of a small town.I always feel as if I'm there while reading these books.

I highly recommend this book.

Quaint small town cozy mystery that
The Hatteras West Inn, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains has on the property a near duplicate lighthouse as the one found on Cape Hatteras.Alex Winston, who has lived in Elkton Falls all his life is justifiably proud of his establishment and is positively thrilled that the Dual Keeper's quarters of the inn is finally ready for occupancy.The opening festivities include a debate between two locals who are running for mayor since longtime mayor Grady Hatch is calling it quits and plans to see the country in his new motor home.

After the speech making, Alex learns his best friend Mor Pendleton is finally going to marry Emma and he couldn't be happier for the couple.When Mor goes to his car, he finds a dead body in it and learns the victim is Emma's abusive ex-husband.Both Emma and Mor are prime suspects in the murder but nobody suspects her of killing one of the candidates for mayor.Alex thinks the two murders are linked and decides to do a little snooping when he isn't busy running the inn and persuading his co-worker Elise that they should be a couple.

ROOM FOR MURDER is a quaint small town cozy mystery that gives the audience a glimpse into the small town Southern lifestyle.The protagonist of the novel is a likable and endearing character who likes to get involved in the local homicides.Tim Mysers is a talented storyteller who knows how to write an interesting amateur sleuth tale.Readers will have a hard time figuring out who the perpetrator is but once he is revealed, it makes sense and is totally believable.

The Girl in the Lighthouse by Roxane Tepfer Sanford seems at first glance to be a nice well-told story about a girl growing up on an island in the North East just after the Civil War.Sanford captures the period well as she introduces young Lillian Arrington. Lillian's idyllic world is shattered with the death of her strange but beautiful mother and her life becomes unbearable at her Grandmother's crumbling plantation mansion.Shadows of V.C. Andrews' Flowers in the Attic hang over The Girl in the Lighthouse but Sanford adds a surprising twist that keeps the reader guessing about Lillian's mysterious and horrifying family secret until the very end.

A good read
This book is about two parts of Lillian Arrington's life.She is the narrator and her voice is vibrant but often confused as she tackles what life throws at her.Life certainly does that in the second part of the book.We only see things through her eyes and therefore some of the motivations and experiences of the other characters is not clear.But that seems to be the intention of the author, whose writing holds your attention to the end. This could be book one of Lillian's story and if It is I would read the next instalment.

The beauty of childhood is ever fleeting for so many. "The Girl in the Lighthouse" tells the story of Lillian Arrington, a young girl who loses her dream life in a lighthouse to live under the thumb of an evil grandmother. Desiring to find her history, she finds her idealistic life has some truly nasty roots. "The Girl in the Lighthouse" is a solid and fine read for younger readers.

Enlightening And Entertaining
All too familiar with a life lived in isolation, young Lillian is thrilled when her father is transferred to a new lighthouse station; the reason being: another family is stationed there, and she gets the chance to make the acquaintance of their young two sons. With the opportunity to finally start enjoying somewhat of a normal social life, Lillian couldn't be more pleased with the promising new direction her life has taken.

However, she soon finds her newfound joy to be quite short-lived when her mother begins a long, painful descent into what appears to be insanity. As her mind slowly wastes away, Lillian's mother begins recounting people, places, and experiences that all come as a complete surprise to her - but not as surprising as the long-hidden family secrets that they're soon revealed to be. Now, with full knowledge of her parents' seamy past, Lillian struggles to come to grips with the difficult truths of her family's shady history...

Surprisingly fast-paced and engrossing, The Girl In The Lighthouse is quite the engaging read. Loved it!

Easy to read, easy to relate too
I usually find it difficult to really get into a book until several pages, or even a chapter, into a book. This one had me by the second page. I found the characters (Rachel and Malachi) true to life. They are ordinary people with feelings; desires; insecurities; and fears. The story is about a man and woman who have been best friends since childhood, but now find that their attraction to each other goes much deeper. The problem is, neither one realizes how the other feels.

The story centers on a budding romance between Rachel and Pierre, a Frenchman she meets on the internet. Throughout the story the characters'(Rachel & Malachi) minds drift to past memories and events that led to them growing apart. What I liked most is that I could relate to the thoughts and feelings they each had. I think most people who have been in love, especially the early stages, can.

Murder Strikes Close to Home in this Charming Cozy
In "Murder Checks Inn", North Carolina innkeeper Alex Winston is trying to stay afloat financially while re-building his historic Cape Hatteras lighthouse turned bed-and-breakfast.Alex finds himself hosting a cantankerous group of guests, including a mother and her two adult children who have come to Elkton Falls for the reading of the will of their eccentric ex-husband and father Matthias Trask.But the will reading never happens, because Trask's will turns up missing from the law office of Alex's Uncle Jase Winston, and Uncle Jase is found bludgeoned to death with a paperweight.Amateur sleuth Alex tries to find his uncle's killer in this charming cozy.In Alex's mind, no one is above suspicion in this murder, not even his own brother Tony.Alex also tries to sort out his romantic feelings towards his lovely housekeeper Elise, who seems to reciprocate his feelings as well.

Author Myers has done a great job of creating a wonderful inn located in a lighthouse located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.Reading these books makes me ready to check into this homey inn and enjoy a cozy stay. Cozy readers will enjoy this book, whether they are familiar with this series or not.

Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse is always a surprise to visitors.You usually don't see a lighthouse in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.Alex Winston, Innkeeper, loves this place.His father had it built because his mother loved Cape Hatteras.

The Trask family checks in.Cynthia, her daughter Ashley and her son Steven are only here because it is the only way to hearMr. Trask's will. But, Mr. Trask's lawyer, and Alex's uncle, Jase Winston is murdered and the will stolen before it could be read.

Alex calls his brother Tony.Tony comes to stay at the Inn for the memorial service.Alex and Tony don't get along too well.

In the midst of everything, Elise Danton's fiance moves to turn.Elise is the housekeeper at the Inn.Alex is very interested in Elise, but doesn't want to interfere since she's engaged.

As Alex starts looking into his uncle's murder, he begins to question everyone.Could one of the Trask family killed Jase.Who else had a motive to kill Jase?Alex discovers a lot of information and has to sift through everything to find the killer.In the meantime, many things start happening and Alex knows he's getting close.

This is a very enjoyable series.I love lighthouses and like the idea of a lighthouse inn near the mountains.The scenery is very inviting.I would love to stay at this Inn.

Alex is a wonderful character.Very likeable.He enjoys his work, but the downfalls are shown as well as the good times.Elise is somewhat of a mystery.She's described well enough, but to add to the story, Alex doesn't fully understand her.I think there is a lot there to be discovered in future books.

I love all the characters in the local town.They are very realistic.

I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

A Quintessential Cozy
Alex Winston is a nice, accommodating kind of guy who owns and operates Hatteras West, an inn centered around a colorful lighthouse located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, far from its Atlantic Coast namesake. What with demanding guests, financial difficulties, woman problems and a gathering of the Trask clan to read their father's last will and testament, Alex has his hands full.

His load becomes even heavier when his uncle, the Trask family lawyer who has been like a father to Alex, is found murdered in his law office. Who could have possibly wanted to bash in the head of the genial old eccentric? Tim's brother Tony, who was about to be written out of the uncle's will? Julie, a surprise Trask heir from the wrong side of the blanket? Perhaps the lawyer's secretary Nadine, the only one who can decipher the old man's handwriting. Or Vernum, the shy and shaggy gardener who hides from Tim's guests.

Tim Myers' Lighthouse mysteries are the coziest of the cozy, and Murder Checks Inn, the third in the series, is no exception. By now, the lighthouse setting has become familiar to readers, and no longer offers the surprises of book one, Innkeeping with Murder. Instead, Myers maintains interest by peppering the pages with suspicious characters, each with a more compelling motive than the last.

Cozy mystery readers are a forgiving breed. If the characters become a trifle homogenized and the solution a wee bit formulaeic, we don't care. Alex Winston is just such a gol-darned nice guy, and we really care about what happens to him and his charming inn. By the end of the story, Alex' life is heading in a satisfying direction and we look forward to what future books in the series have in store.

strong amateur sleuth
It's not many people who live and work at a place that means everything to them but Alex Winston is one of the chosen few.He works and lives in a lighthouse motel, the Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse located in the small town of Elkton Falls, North Carolina.The guests he serves always entertain him and he currently looks forward to the Trask family reunion.However, when they check in, he realizes they are not on vacation but are there for the reading of a will.

Alex's Uncle Jase is to read the will to the grieving family, the wife Cynthia, the daughter Ashley and the brother Steven but he is murdered before he can.The only item missing from his office is the will and that makes the Trask family members prime subjects.A previous unknown but acknowledged daughter also is one of the beneficiaries of the will and she too is considered a suspect.There is one more questionable person that must be considered.Alex's brother Tony desperately needed the money that Jase left him in his will.Alex is determined to find out who is uncle's killer is even it means risking his own life.

MURDER CHECKS INN is so colorful that readers would like to take a vacation at the lighthouse motel depicted in the novel.The scenery is picturesque while the story line is fast light and entertaining.The support cast adds an extra touch of color to the tale.The protagonist is very likable and he knows all the suspects have viable motives, which makes him even more determined to find the real killer.

Quick read
I was looking for another Pirate book and found this one. Was an enjoyable "quick" read on the airplane. Not as good as Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton, but still worth the read.

Anxious To Read This
The Publishers Weekly reviewer reveals his intellectual snobbery in mocking phrases such as "tippy tip." But when critics find a work one-dimensional, I often see layers of meaning. Maybe it's because to me the story is more important than the mechanics of how it's delivered. I have not yet read this book, but I've seen the 1971 movie based on it starring Kirk Douglas, Yul Brynner, and Samantha Eggar. As usual, artistic license was taken in changing the main character to an American and so forth, but from reading the plot synopsis it seems the movie preserves the main outline and events of the novel. The movie was brutal, and the dimwits in Hollywood tried to market it as Christmas family fare simply because it was written by Jules Verne. The censor boards forced cuts, resulting in an uneven film with little advertising which failed at the box office. But when I saw it on television I was haunted by the story for years, and just recently paid fifty bucks to get one of the out-of-print DVDs. It's rated PG, but I think it should be PG-13. There is some physical action, but most of the action is spiritual and psychological and boy, is there plenty of that. So don't let the fact that this novel was written by Jules Verne make you think it's just for kids; I don't think Verne considered himself to be a writer of children's books! It's also great to have a more recent unpredjudiced translation based on the original manuscript.

A true classic
This is a classic hero saves the day story, except it was written long before Hollywood was ever in existence. It was a good, short, and action packed novel sure to please anyone who reads it. No, this isn't Pirates of the Caribbean, these pirates are the real deal and they don't give anyone a chance. Arrghh, a real treasure of a book matey!

One of Verne's best books
One of the greatest adventure books of all time, whose basic plot has been copied by many other books and movies (including the Die Hard films). In the 1850s, the Argentine navy erects a lighthouse at Isla de los Estados, in the southern tip of South America, near the Magellan Strait that connects the Atlantic and the Pacific and in the turbulent waters that had witnessed many shipwrecks throughout the centuries. Left behind in the lighthouse to guard it are three sailors, without knowing that in the island lie pirates with a plot to takeover the lighthouse in order to intentionally shipwreck the ships passing by and take over their treasures. A sailor escapes alive the seizure of the lighthouse by the pirates and a game of cat and mouse begins (if you seen Die Hard, you can imagine the plot, with the guard trying to hit back at the pirates). A great adventure book that you can read fast and easily.

Survival and Suspense
Don't read this book execting all of the "good guys" to survive. It's too realistic for that, but it was great. It had a pleasing ending and the "bad guys" got their dues. If you like modern-day stories, don't read this. If you like classic adventures, you'll like it. Also, it made me feel what the main character was feeling. ... Read more

It was about that calm hour of the morning which precedes sunrise, when most living creatures are still asleep, and inanimate nature wears, more than at other times, the semblance of repose. The men pulled "with a will,"--as seamen pithily express it,--and in silence. Only once during the first hour did the big, ill-favoured man venture a remark. Referring to the absence of wind, he said, that "it would be a' the better for landin' on the rock."

This was said in the broadest vernacular dialect, as, indeed, was everything that dropped from the fishermen's lips. We take the liberty of modifying it a little, believing that strict fidelity here would entail inevitable loss of sense to many of our readers.

Good ghost story
Good read--I didn't want to put it down.The ending was pretty predictable, but it was still an enjoyable read.You don't get many ghost stories these days, which I enjoy, so this was a nice change.

Great escapist read!
I really enjoyed reading this book. O'Rourke's writing style is pleasant and flows easily, which is exactly what I needed since I'm still a bit foggy from being sick most of the week. I was caught up in the story very quickly--who doesn't like a ghost story?--and I had a hard time putting the book down. Actually, there is more to this book than just the ghost story, but I don't want to give away too much because I would risk spoiling it. Let's just say the last several chapters prove to be very intense!

I also liked the way O'Rourke handled Susan's two men in her life--Bobby (disappeared and presumed dead), whom Susan had basically fooled herself into believing was the perfect man, and Dan, who truly was the perfect man--for her, I mean, naturally he had his own flaws. It was a very realistic portrayal of her relationships--luckily, in the end she found someone who was everything she wanted, rather than someone whom she had built up to be everything she wanted because that was what she wanted to believe and wanted to have. (I hope that made sense, I plead a fuzzy head from the cold if it doesn't!)

All-in-all I thought it was a great escapist read, made even better by the fact that had I not been browsing BJ's, I likely never would have come across it! A ghost story/mystery from Susan's family's past, an emerging mystery in Susan's current life, and a love story with a happy ending. Now I've got to get my hands on O'Rourke's first book, The Man Who Loved Jane Austen--I like the sound of that!

Wonderful read
I can say I have read her first with Jane and now Maidenstone. It is a book that is a fast read because you want to find out what will happen next. She fell in love with someone and lost them only to find out the real danger lay ahead in more ways than one. There are three people to save her and one is a ghost.
I would say give this author a try and her newest Christmas at Sea Pines Cottage is good for the whole family to read. My 10year old son loved it!

entertaining amateur sleuth paranormal romance
Grief stricken by the tragic death of her beloved Bobby in a plane crash over the Pacific and lacking closure as his body and those of the other victims were never found, Susan Mark needs time away from the memories of her fiancé that is everywhere.She heads to property she inherited from her great aunt in Freedman's Cove, Rhode Island.She goes there because her fondest memories were the summers she spent there.

To her shock, the ghost of an ancestor visits Sue, who learns the spirit died tragically.Sue also meets childhood summer friend Dan Freedman.With his help, she begins to accept her loss and move on with her life.However, as Sue and Don fall in love, a second tragedy leaves Sue shattered once again.

Two mysteries, past and present, make for a wonderful contemporary tale starring a likable protagonist who when she sees the apparition for the first time wonders if she is losing her mind due to her grief.Sue owns the exciting well written story line as she struggles to find solace only to deal with a hundred year old mystery and her growing attraction to dependable Dan; ironically the first somewhat occupies her mind while the second her heart but also makes her feel guilty that she is deserting Bobby.THE MAIDENSTONE LIGHTHOUSE is an entertaining amateur sleuth paranormal romance.

A Fitting Tribute
Each lighthouse has its own fascinating story of man against the sea and his eventual triumph in building not only safety beacons for travel but also monuments to the engineering and ingenuity of the era.These lighthouses were truly the pinnacle of technology when they were built.
It is somewhat unique to find a book totally devoted to just one of the numerous famous "rock lighthouses" of Great Britain.

Bishop Rock just happens to be my favorite lighthouse and I was very pleased to see that someone else not only shared my sentiments, but cared enough to research and compose a book about it. This is a very thorough history of the lighthouse on Bishop Rock. I would divide the book into two sections; construction and service history.Each is very fascinating and easy to read.There is a wealth of illustrations as well as vintage and modern photographs.They not only include the common exteriors of the lighthouse but some rare interior photos as well as photos of the light and lenses components. A great book all in all.

Sadly the lighthouse on Bishop Rock in now totally automated so in essence this book is the only way anyone will be able to "visit" this famed lighthouse!

Excellent Resource for Beginner and Experts
I thought the ebook was very well written. It not only told you what you are looking to hear, but it provided you with some excellent ideas of how to build your network marketing business. While true this is a "belly to belly" business, I think you need to use the internet to attract a much wider audience. Writer Wendy Laing has taken an actual lighthouse where she has been a guest at the lighthouse keeper's cottage: The Cape Otway in Victoria, Australia as the starting point for her nicely wrought tale, and she has woven an entertaining book of eight chapters for early readers. Through the magic of a time tunnel children Aaron and Gracie Brandon are taken to a long ago time where they meet a marvelous old Scottish sea captain's ghost. The pair had been less than enthralled while vacationing with their parents to discover the old lighthouse where they are staying has no video games or anything else interesting for them to do. And, then they meet Captain Angus! When they do everything changes. Cap'n Angus takes the pair on virtual reality trips sailing on masted ships, with opportunity for meeting one of their ancestors along with watching a sea rescue and other adventures.

Wendy Laing has done it again! This talented writer continues to produce excellently written, well researched materials sure to be used in the classroom and for home reading alike. Captain Angus, the Lighthouse Ghost is an inviting venture for children sure to keep youngsters entertained as they travel through the interactive links allowing them to make a voyage through the internet. Writer Laing really understands how to make history come alive for young readers. These just make it easier for teachers, and parent home teachers too to quickly decide if this book will fit into our particular teaching need at the moment.

Combining Mystery & History with Adventure
Aaron and Gracie didn't want to spend their summer vacation at the Cape Lighthouse station, but their parents insisted this was where the family would vacation this year.They were sure it was going to be a long, boringsummer.There was nothing to do!
