Book Description
This is the first book to examine the literary history of the United States in terms of the chronological occurrence of significant events and activities. This comprehensive volume lists the dates of birth and death of literary figures, important historical facts, and the authors and titles of works published for each year, from Colonial times to the present. The compiler's introduction offers an interesting and informative discussion of how, from little more than a list of author's titles, and events, we may observe a year in the history of a nation, through the political, scientific, and social developments that fired the imaginations of America's writers, and fed the appetites of a growing reading public. ... Book Description
Allen Ginsberg is perhaps the most famous poet of our time, as well as one of our most prolific writers. His subjects range from Buddhist studies to drug research to gay rights to political issues of every description from Vietnam to censorship. Ginsberg gave the author access to personal files and, as a result, every appearance of Ginsberg's writings in the English language is noted. This bibliography is a comprehensive, descriptive record of all of Ginsberg's works. The volume contains descriptive annotations of every book, pamphlet, and broadside by Ginsberg. It also contains complete descriptions of every contribution by Ginsberg to the works of others. In addition, all periodical contributions, recordings, films, and miscellaneous publications are listed. Due to Ginsberg's recent acceptance as a photographer of note, a special section identifies all of his published photographs. Entries are arranged in chapters according to the type of work, to facilitate ease of use. As a result, this book presents a history of Ginsberg's works and traces the evolution of his writings over a period of publications and revisions. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
A new edition of the definitive bibliography of the modern spy-adventure-intrigue novel. First published in 1976, this edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. After a discussion of early spy fiction, Smith and White provide a detailed listing of novels from 1940 onward. The bibliography is organized alphabetically, with entries providing brief content annotations. Access is enhanced by cross references as well as appendixes and author and title indexes. Among the new features provided with this edition are a bibliography of articles and books which reflect recent popular scholarship; an appendix, "Craft Notes," in which writers themselves speak to concerns of their own choosing; and a glossary of terms on the fascinating and sometimes semantically bizarre language of espionage and spies. As Julian Rathbone writes in his foreword, "I am delighted that the Editors have given me this opportunity to recommend this new edition of Cloak and Dagger to all aficionados of that branch of fiction which has more to say about the way we live now than any other." An important reference tool for public and research libraries and their patrons interested in modern fiction and the spy novel. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Oceania has a rich and growing literary tradition. The imaginative literature that emerged in the 1960s often reflected the forms and structures of European literature, though the ideas expressed were typically anticolonial. After three decades, the literature of Oceania has become much more complex, in terms of style as well as content; and authors write in a multiplicity of styles and voices. While the written literature of Oceania is continuously gaining more critical attention, questions about the imposition of European literary standards and values as a further extension of colonialism in the Pacific have become a central issue. This book is a detailed survey of the expanding amount of critical and interpretive material written about the imaginative literature of authors from Oceania. It focuses on commentary and scholarship concerned with the poetry, fiction, and drama written in English by indigenous peoples of the Pacific Islands, New Zealand, and Australia. The criticisms have appeared in academic books and journals since the mid-1960s. They have developed to the point at which critical issues, related to decolonization and the expression of ideas without having to first satisfy foreign expectations, often determine the direction of such discussions. Entries are grouped in topical chapters, and each entry includes an extensive annotation. An introductory essay summarizes the evolution of Pacific literature. ... Read more
