5-0 out of 5 stars Used this and saw MAJOR rewards!
I took the Lit GRE a year ago and was unhappy with my score, so I bought this study guide and spent my summer trying to improve my score. The result?I improved by 120 points and moved from the 55th percentile to the 91st!I used this book as a jumping off point for some major study time, and I feel it was extremely useful.

The book focuses on helping its readers score easy points on what is a very long, broad, and taxing exam. The book is separated into sections. The first sections offer a test overview and a basic strategy for tackling the exam.It emphasizes identification, and having taken the test twice, I'd definitely say that identifications comprise the bulk of the test. The rest of the book tells you what to study through a series of lists. It doesn't just list a book and author and say "know this," however.Rather, it points out the best works to read (best meaning that they are quick to read and have a high likelihood of showing up on the test).I read all the short works and feel that this was definitely worth my study time. Also, they give a great overview of literary and verse terms, which will definitely help you on the test.

Again, I didn't just use this book.I used the book as a jumping off point for more in-depth study. The book helped me earn the easy points, but the practice test and its answer explanations (READ THEM ALL--EVEN IF YOU GOT THE QUESTION RIGHT) tells you what else you should know or study for the test.Because this material has a much smaller chance of showing up on the test, it doesn't make the lists in the earlier sections of the book.Still, it is not just a practice exam but a study tool in itself that you must use to find your weaknesses.Once aware of what your problems are, you should be using the Norton anthologies and some other sources to fill in your weak spots. This is what I did, and it paid off.I'm surprised that some people did not find the practice test useful as this really helped me focus on exactly what areas I needed to study.

Lastly, this book doesn't cover the Bible or minority authors or 20th century literature, but this is because this material doesn't show up on enough questions to warrant a lot of study time.Princeton Review tells you this, and it's really true.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Sure It Covers Enough
Princeton usually offers a) a thorough coverage of what's on tests, b) tricks of the trade to beat the test, or c) both. This book provides information that's on the test and gives a trick or two, but it's not a strong enough resource for a test that is consistently labeled as very difficult. It's wiser to borrow it from the library or look at it in the store than to buy it.Online materials, including Vade Mecum ([...]) are MUCH stronger resources.

3-0 out of 5 stars Benefits from a lack of serious competition...
There's something fundamentally iffy about the idea of a test prep book that has only one practice test. I mean, ETS will send you one of those for free. That having been said, the study methods outlined here, particularly the tips on works and periods the text is likely to emphasize, are great. The practice test with its detailed and helpful explanation answers are very valuable, and you do need this book if you are studying for the Literature GRE.

Do not, however, rely on it as heavily as the most positive reviewers tell you to. This book is lazy on a number of points -- it tells you not to bother studying Shakespeare or the Bible without offering any kind of tips or "cheat sheet" about either topic, and its summary of the major schools of literary theory is out of date and written at basically a high school AP level. (Come on, if you don't know what Marxism is you probably shouldn't be taking the Literature GRE just yet...)

So, qualified praise. You should use this book definitely, but you should also do some things it tells you not to: 1) Read King Lear. Now! 2) Looking through some key books of the Bible (the beginning and end of each of the Four Gospels, and maybe Ecclesiastes and the Song of Songs) couldn't hurt. 3) Pick up a basic paperback introduction to literary theory (Terry Eagleton's will serve well and can be read in a day or two).

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for a plan of attack....
I must admit that I was intially skeptical about how much a Literature GRE prep book could help me; it seems almost common sense to think you cannot possibly study for such a broad topic. The book dispells this myth right away, and uses a convincing argument: the fact that literature in English covers such a broad area is something to the test maker's detriment, not the test taker's. It is the GRE subject test maker's responsibility to create a test that is multiculturaly sound; one that needs a represntative of English literature that a student of English at a college in India could recognize as easily as a student of English at Harvard. Therefore, there are ways to study for this broad topic: by looking at the barest essentials; the canonical pieces of poetry and fiction that a discernible person might guess an English major might have studied. Which leads to the next myth: that once you have a list of likely works that you must read every single one, from Beowulf to the Modern era. This isn't true, (the book makes the point here that one shouldn't bother going to grad school if s/he's already read most of the important works in English; it would surely be worth a degree or two by that point) in fact you need only skim the important details of these works by 1.reading a summary; 2. reading an author's bio or an intro section to the work in the Norton anthology; or 3. if you've already read the work, quickly reviewing the plot and characters by skimming a few passages to jog your memory. The goal is to get points, and luckily most of those points are easily taken if you can recognize a certain passage, which most likely contains key elements from a work or author and not a vaugue obscurity that no one has read except the most fervent of an author's scholar.
Oh, and if you're like me and weren't an English major, I highly recommend that you buy this book as a favor to yourself. As you're already disadvantaged by your skim study in comparison to the English majors you'll be competing against in grad school, you need all the advantages you can get. It starts with this one. The book has major and minor lists of works and authors that scrupulous research of previous tests deems you should know, so I suggest you take advantage of it. Luckily I was an English minor, and was fairly well versed by reading in my spare time. If you aren't either of this things however, I'd suggest not only getting this book, but hiring a tutor.
In summary, if you like the large, cumbersome expanses of a huge discipline attempting to be shoved into a small peanut shell, then this book is for you. You'll be getting just a snippet, but this snippet may indeed be worth your money and effort. Just remember though: it's a guide or an outline, not the end all and be all of your studying efforts. Treat it as such, and keep your Norton anthology handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for how to take the test
If you are looking for a last minute study session, this is not the place to turn. They give you excellent advice on how the test is scored and methods of marking answers but there are few passages in it. They do provide an excellent list of authors you should know and quick overviews of some classic literature but nothing extreamely specific. I used this book in conjunction with my own study program and found the book really worth my while. It's a little light on Lit theory though, so you may want to brush up on that part of the test. Overall I would buy it again. It's written with a dry sense of humor and a drive to see the student do well ... Read more

Product Description
From “the biggest little magazine in the world” comes an addictively clever anthology prescribed to fill all the blank moments of your life.

The Paris Review Book for Planes, Trains, Elevators, and Waiting Rooms is the ultimate, and perfect, theme-anthology. It's theme is the reader. Everyday we must live through moments of waiting--to get from one place to the next, from one appointment to another, for something to happen. This ingeniously useful compendium offers reading material to fill those gray moments with beauty, wonder, insight, and emotion. Organized by the time that the reader has available at that moment, the anthology provides a poem for that elevator ride to the lawyer's office; a short story for the thirty-minute commute; a novella for the three-hour plane ride. As ever, The Paris Review provides work from only the best writers of the last three generations.

Among those to appear:
- Mary Robison
- Denis Johnson
- Michael Chabon
- Marilyn Hacker
- Robert Pinsky
- and many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Airplane/Train/Bus ride book!
Do yourself a favor and buy this book.Take it on a trip, a plane, to the doctor's office waiting room, the dentist, basically anywhere where you might end up waiting around for awhile (DMV?).This contains a lot of great short stories from authors ranging from turn of the century (1900) to modern authors (2000s).I will update my review shortly after I have read a few more of the stories.

The other great waiting room book is the Paris Review People with Problems.

If you enjoy short fiction then get this!

4-0 out of 5 stars solidifying TPR's reputation as a preeminent literary pub...
Richard Powers in his introduction to The Paris Review Book for Planes, Trains, Elevators, and Waiting Rooms, tells us readers that "We are living in the middle of an epidemic... infecting us with the contagion of real time", and "we read to escape - if only briefly - the trap of real time, and then to return and recognize - if only briefly - the times we are trapped in." Organized by the time that the reader has available at that moment - albeit vast stretches of time to merely seconds - this remarkable anthology delivers the breadth and depth of astute writing that has affirmed The Paris Review as the preeminent literary journal of our time.

In the section, "Planes" - life's brief moments to a dynasty of history marks the various stories assembled. Edward P. Jones's, "Marie", an elderly SSI recipient is summoned to wait in offices through notices signed by a dead bureaucrat, attacks a receptionist, wards off a mugger with a knife, and confesses her dismal life for a Howard University student onto tapes which are too painful to hear. In Karl Iagnemma's, "On the Nature of Human Romantic Interaction", Joseph, an ex-PhD. student who mans phones in the TechInfo office, tries to mathematically comprehend the complexity of his love for his ex-PhD. advisor's daughter, Alexandra who "is stingy with love; she is afraid of ending up like her parent's, who squandered their love like drunks at a craps table". After posing a timed marriage ultimatum - accept the proposal prior to graduation, in the end Joseph loses the fickle Alexandra for he can't conjure the equations to make sense of the range of human emotion.

In the section, "Trains", great moments are compacted. In Raymond Carver's, "Why Don't You Dance", a lonely man offers up his belongings in a yard sale to a giddy couple only if they give him the pleasure of conversation and a quick dance. A Brahman wife, desperate for any prayer or religion which will save her dying husband, secretly turns to Christianity for a cure in V.S. Naipul's, "My Aunt Gold Teeth".

Poems predominately mark the section, "Elevators". Deborah Warren considers mortality and the invented machine "...so frail its breath/depends on something casual as the air/you cruise on, asymptotic to your death?" in her poem, "Airplane". The exquisite and seductive mistress heroin and the fantastic world and textures it simulates are addressed in Jim Carroll's, "Heroin". White rooms, white flowers, and chalky light evoke a supremely disturbing marriage to the lethal drug. Could escape and magic exist underneath the astringent hospital corridors - "through the deserted tunnels linking buildings" - in Lucy Grealy's wonderful verse, "Ward 10"? A world beyond medical terminology, animal experiments and recovery wards.

Perhaps the most prolific section of the anthology is "Waiting Rooms" with stories from Rick Moody, Charles D'Ambrosio and Ethan Canin. A year after her death, a brother grieves his sister who was killed in a tragic drunk-driving accident en route to her wedding rehearsal dinner in Rick Moody's, "The Mansion on the Hill". Andrew takes a job at a wedding planning agency, ignores the heart-felt advances of a pretend marriage-obsessive c-worker. Andrew excels at the problem-solving, the business of marriage until he spies the man who was to marry his sister, marrying another woman -- I no longer knew what marriage meant, really, except that the celebration of it seemed built into every life I knew but my own -- it is only then Andrew confronts and moves past his loss. In the absolute star of the collection is the closing story, Ethan Canin's, "The Palace Thief" where a classics professor meets his moral match in a manipulative senator's son - their complex and compromising relationship and war of ethics haunts the narrator for over four decades until he once again unites with the boy, now a wealthy baron who seeks to challenge the teacher once again.

The Paris Review is that experienced Madame, rouged up, filthy-mouthed - she's seen and done it all. From interviews with Nabokov to Richard Howard, the prose of Alice Munro, William Maxwell and T.C. Boyle - the artisans of the traditional short story form, to the innovative styles conjured by Lydia Davis and Raymond Carver, to the gritty poems of Jim Carroll and the prolific verses of Pinsky, Olds and Larkin, The Paris Review has published the greatest works of the twentieth century and no doubt after the untimely passing of its colorful patron, George Plimpton, the bar for great writing will continue to be raised high.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timely reading for the compulsive
Plimpton was on to something with The Paris Review, a fresh venue for new authors, as well as a series of incisive interviews with innovative perspectives and opinions on the writing process. Certainly The Paris Review anthologies are a logical extension of the magazine. This newest anthology is a perfect companion for filling quiet moments, sampling a literary banquet that can be enjoyed incrementally.

Previously, The Paris Review, a singular literary magazine, published a 50 year celebratory anthology, The Paris Review Book of Heartbreak, Madness, Sex, Love, Betrayal, Outsiders, Intoxication, War, Whimsy, Horrors, God, Death, Dinner, Baseball, Travels, The Art of Writing, and Everything Else in the World Since 1953. This first in the unexpected series was published prior to editor Gorge Plimpton's untimely death. The anthology was so well received, that Picador created a second volume in the Paris Review Book series, this one for those spare moments waiting for a train, plane, elevator, etc., when the avid reader might steal a moment of mental nourishment or a temporary release from boredom.

Tucked into a briefcase, this latest Paris Review effort is a welcome addition to reading-on-the-go, with stimulating short stories, poetry and even a novella. The selections are stimulating, carefully chosen and listed under the appropriate sections for each category: planes, trains, elevators and waiting rooms. Using the same premise and a variety of authors, Alice Munro, V.S. Naipaul, William S. Borroughs, Philip Roth and other luminaries that have graced the pages of the Paris Review over the years, the editors have created another unique grouping of talent, guaranteed to please the discerning reader.

Being a waiting room aficionado, I found enough choices to render me indecisive, reduced to picking favorite authors before experimenting with less familiar ones. I wasn't disappointed; instead, the stories piqued my curiosity and I began a list of authors for a few greedy hours of uninterrupted reading. If the Paris Review Book for Planes, Trains, Elevators and Waiting Rooms is any indication of the editor's picking up where the first anthology left off, I wouldn't be surprised if Plimpton was guiding their selections, no doubt smiling upon this latest creative endeavor. "Gathered here is a selection of the essays [of] the distinguished Hungarian born novelist Stephen Vizinczey. . . . Taken together they have a weight and amplitude of a very high order. . . . What is most impressive about these essays (apart from their range and erudition) is the way that literature and life are so subtly intertwined with each other. The passion for the one is the passion for the other. As it ought to be in criticism, but seldom is."—Mark Le Fanu, The Times (London)

"If a critic's job is to puncture pomposity, deflate over-hyped reputations and ferret out true value, then Vizinczey is master of the art."—Publishers Weekly

"Stephen Vizinczey comes on like a pistol-packing stranger here to root out corruption and remind us of our ideals. He carries the role off with inspired gusto. His boldness and pugnacity are bracing and can be very funny."—Ray Sawhill, Newsweek

"Every piece in the book is good, and many are so good that, after dipping into the middle, I stayed up half of the night, reading with growing amazement and admiration."—Bruce Bebb, Los Angeles Reader

5-0 out of 5 stars Nouvelle interpretation

5-0 out of 5 stars What A Feast!
Vizinczey's passionate essays remind us of why we read literature. His articulate enthusiasm for great writers will inspire and invigorate you- and it will also surely make you seek out the best in literature (which, ofcourse, includes Vizinczey's own two novels)

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning to read great novels with Vizinczey
We hear nowadays numerous comments on the fate of reading in our schools and universities. The ubiquity of digital technology, the lack of silence, concentration, and solitude, and the substitution of books by videos andcompact disks are considered by some critics as the main reasons for thegradual decline in the habit of reading.

In addition, the variousprograms of study often fail to awaken in the students a genuine andlasting interest in serious texts. Notwithstanding the claims of someacademics, it is not the pedantic literary scholarship that makes them turnto the great novels. They come to appreciate masterpieces thanks to therepeated invitations delivered to them in lively lectures and absorbingessays. Students need enthusiastic and intelligent teachers and writers whoare able to show that novels, plays and poems are sources of inspirationand wisdom and, above all, contain answers to their most disquietingquestions.

Stephen Vizinczey is one of these writers. His Truth and Liesin Literature is not only a collection of beautifully written essays andincisive reviews but also a strong contender for the best introduction toliterature that I have ever read. I would recommend this book to all mystudents. I am convinced that it would stimulate many of them to becomepassionate readers, ones who would "grab" (Vizinczey's verb) any classicthat they could lay their hands on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essays spiked with with wit, reality, charm and erudition
Vizinczey shares his views on a variety of topics from the works of fellow writers to ills of society, to rules for living for young writers. His essays and books(In Praise of older Women, An Innocent Millionaire) havealways captivated me because of his riveting views and open criticism ofhuman shortcomings. A refreshing quality is his strong commitments in anincreasingly non-committal society where everything is slowly turning grey, and where most questions are responded to with the phrase: "Itdepends..." His style is powerful with masterfully wowen sentencesthat hold the readers attention from the first word to the last letter. Theessay "A Writers Ten Commandments" is definetely a keeper. Itoffers rules of living to budding writers that can be applied in a muchbroader sense to life in general. If you want to read a good book, beentertained, amused, learn a little and mostly make some sense from thisrapidly moving and changing "human scene" of ours, than Truth andLies... is a must read. ... Product Description
Healthcare providers, consumers, researchers and policy makers are inundated with unmanageable amounts of information, including evidence from healthcare research. It has become impossible for all to have the time and resources to find, appraise and interpret this evidence and incorporate it into healthcare decisions. Cochrane Reviews respond to this challenge by identifying, appraising and synthesizing research-based evidence and presenting it in a standardized format, published in The Cochrane Library (www.thecochranelibrary.com).

The Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions contains methodological guidance for the preparation and maintenance of Cochrane intervention reviews. Written in a clear and accessible format, it is the essential manual for all those preparing, maintaining and reading Cochrane reviews. Many of the principles and methods described here are appropriate for systematic reviews applied to other types of research and to systematic reviews of interventions undertaken by others. It is hoped therefore that this book will be invaluable to all those who want to understand the role of systematic reviews, critically appraise published reviews or perform reviews themselves. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant - and crucial -update, beautifully presented
Until this book was published, the only way to access the Cochrane Handbook was to view it online. I don't know about you, but it is much more difficult for me to concentrate on a complex topic when I'm reading something about it online, or reading from a pile of printed-out pages. Having already lost many good hours of my life attempting to use the Handbook in those newfangled ways, it was literally a delight to open the lovely, bright hardbound book, and browse through it this way during a recent transatlantic airplane ride. Not only is it vastly easier to use, but the writing is very fresh and clear, which is important since this 2008 update of the Handbook was quite a significant one. In short, if you are working on a Cochrane review (or any systematic review or meta-analysis), or if you are just interested on an intellectual basis, you will find this new edition of the Cochrane Handbook to be indispensable. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I love Princeton Review test prep books.Princeton Review books are so friendly they take away a lot of the stress.I used this book when I was in high school and got a nearly perfect score, and I wasn't a big reader back then.I did better than some of my "smarter" friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars So few examples
Do not waste your money on this title. There are so few examples and they don't resemble the actual SAT questions at all.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book Horrible!!
I fully intended to happily learn all the ins and outs of the SAT II Writing. Learning about the Literature part too would just be a two for one deal. The thing that should have set my antennae up was how short the book was for studying for two SAT IIs. But the sparkling review from that one person who oozed satisfaction because of the book dissolved my doubts.

This PR book is horrible. First, there are three tests in the books but without one word of explanation. I was left wondering, why did I get this wrong? Secondly, there are drills after each very short lesson, but those explanations were really only a couple words. Thirdly, the supposed essays they give you that are supposed to teach you what a good essay looked like, was trash. They showed you two horrible essays that were four sentences long that everyone should know already not to do. The third essay was supposed to be good but it was a trite essay on Romeo and Juliet that wouldn't have gotten more than a four. Fourth, they give wrong information because length is not the only thing those people are looking for. Lastly, when "teaching" about idioms, they state that there are no rules, you just have to know how to "listen" to them?? Well you know what, that isn't true!

The book could teach you a few things, but very few, and no better than another book could. I recommend Sparknotes SAT II Writing. It actually teaches you thoroughly and gives you explicit explanations. Plus Sparknotes is less money than the overpriced no good Princeton Review Writing & Literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, realistic book raised my score!
Don't try to take the SAT II Writing Test without a prep book--specifically the Princeton review book. In all honesty, it's a very tricky test but definitely not impossible if you're prepared. The majority of the test consists of those tricky "find the sentence error" or "correct the sentence," which can be daunting--I was certainly daunted. The Princeton Review book methodically goes through every category of error that you will be tested on, giving numerous examples that turned out to be extremely similar to the acutal test questions. I can't emphasize enough how important this is: you WILL feel confident on the test because you already know what you need to be on the lookout for. (Ex: subject-verb agreement, idioms, tenses, etc.) The explanations are clear, concise, and VERY thorough without being too boring. The section on identifying sentece errors has the same clear, effective format. It also includes the best peice of writing test advice: DON'T be afraid to pick choice E--"no error." When all else fails go with the ol' intuition.
But what of the dreaded essay? Don't worry, this book covers that too. It gives lots of sample questions, and directs you as to what eXaCtLy makes a strong essay. My experience says the'yre right: at least on example from literature, then one from life, or history. And your essay should fill up the space they give you. Anyway, the samples are very good (the real questions are usually easier, judging by the ones I've heard), and the advice clear.

Wait, you say! What about the Literature Test?? The section on preparing for the literature test (which, if you study for both, is really trickier than the writing), is equally effective. The book includes many passages of poetry and prose which are VERY similar to those found on the actual test. Once again, the book outlines specific areas with which you will need to be familiar and does a very good job explaining each example and literary term. In a relatively short space, this book manages to give you a comprehensive review of literature, its structure, and how to analyze it.
In sum, I highly recommend this book to anyone preparing for either (or both) of these tests. The practice tests in the back are great (5 full ones!), all the examples realistic and clear, the explanations thorough and helpful. Most importantly, this book will allow you to go into the tests knowing what types of questions and tricks you'll encounter and how to effectively tackle it. Believe me, it drastically helped my score and gave me all the prep and info I needed.

3-0 out of 5 stars PR sucks...
You know... Ive always heard that the PR was a good prep book, so I went out and bought this book. The drills are ok...but its not that good. There are 3 practice tests in this book, but there are no explanations. It just tells you the answers and moves on to another test.I first thought that I got a "defected" book...but no...all my friends told me that their books were also answer-explanation-less.Dont buy this book...get yourself a Barrons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Literature Review
Dr. Eriksen has compiled a very impressive collection of research that supports the controversial upper cervical chiropractic philosophy. He leaves no stone unturned as he discusses the anatomy of the region, its biomechanics, and most importantly, the complex neurology of the region in addition to several other topics, all the while providing abstracts of multi-disciplinary research articles from several international publications concerning the topics being discussed. This text is a wealth of scientific knowledge which helps to explain the miracles that upper cervical doctors constantly see in their offices. And Amazon's price cannot be beaten.

5-0 out of 5 stars great!
this is a great book for anyone wanting a bunch of information and research on this subject. it's very well written, very easy to read, and extreamly informative! i love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Upper Cervical Subluxation Complex
Absolutely incredible book for lay people and chiropractors and anyone interested in the upper cervical spine.Case studies noted are awesome!Thoroughly recommend it to anyone with an interest in this particular area of the spine...bit of chiropractic and medical terminology to overcome if you are a layperson reading it, but a stimulating book all the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Book
This book would have to be the most comprehensive gathering of literature concerning Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic (UCSC), ever. You may need to know everything that has spawned in the literature since Dr BJ Palmer's controversial assertion that the upper cervical spine is the only place chiropractors will find a subluxation. You may just want to casually look up a paper written on the upper cervical spine's influence on health. The book is designed for either type of study. In fact, the beauty of this book is that you don't have to read it so much as refer to it. And for the busy clinician, that's all we can realistically expect.

UCSC is a specialty within chiropractic. As Dr Dan Murphy, DC states in the introduction, for a third of chiropractic's century as a profession "the predominant practice of chiropractic involved primarily the upper cervical spine". Yet, as the Australian experience reflects, it is very few in this country indeed that refrain from directing forces to areas other than C1.

This book is incredible . Everything I have encountered in my own endeavour to seek out anything scientific supporting what BJ was zealously advocating all those years ago, without any apparent evidence, is here. Any low-level writing, such as that of general digest publications, is tolerated well because the reader can look at references instantly to find out how to mentally categorise each opinion. This is a unique format; you don't have to sift through a reference list at the end to see if it was written in this decade, or if your scientific nemesis wrote it! Older papers are listed first, and editorial comment is distinctly defined from abstracts and text. What an enormous gap it fills on my bookshelf.

The only thing this book has not done is to explain the extremely limited uptake of UCSC amongst chiropractors in - and outside of - the USA; which, in turn explains the aching lack of research into large populations undergoing upper cervical chiropractic care, and it's impact on public health.

Yet, does it not make far more sense to discover the intricacies of the articulations of the skull base before any other region is attempted? If you answered yes, this book is for you. If "no", you still need to own it as a complete"chirocentric" literature review of the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all chiropractors
Dr. Eriksen's book is a significant contribution to the profession.Don't be misled by the title--this book is a must read for all chiropractors--not just upper cervical specialists. It provides the "intellectual ammunition" to respond to those who claim there is no scientific evidence to support subluxation. ...
