5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing Memoirs of a Life in the Old South
The White Castle of Louisiana is a collection of letters, storytelling, and personal diary of a woman who grew up at Nottoway Plantation on the Mississippi River between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Her name was Cornelia Randolph, daughter of the owner of Nottoway, John Randolph, who named the place after his home in Delaware. The present day tour guides of this gorgeous plantation home explain to guests that women of that time could not get published, so Cornelia Randolph Murrell signed her book with her name and initials spelled backwards, M. R. Ailenroc, to appear as a man's name and got her book published in 1903. This book gives the reader firsthand knowledge and insight to the lifestyle of the wealthy, genteel, southern society in the 1800s before and after the Civil War in Louisiana and is written in the vernacular of that time, sometimes flowery, but precise with details about elaborate dresses and clothing of that time. She wrote about her trip to France, school in Yankee country, shopping in New Orleans, her relationship with the slaves, her neighbors, relatives, and her courtship with the man who became her husband. It's a fascinating and informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A present and future Treasure .
This is an especially significant book for the descendants of the men who served in this unit as it has a list of the names and their place of enlistment as well as their home of record when discharged. It is also a good resource for the actions of units that fought along side them . Such as 12Th Ms Calv ;20Th TN.Inf ;28Th Al Inf; too many units to list here both Union and Confederate . The Author doesn't just name the Generals but gives the unit identification involved in the action . This book is destined to be one of those sought out books when it sells out . It will sky rocket in value as researchers realise all the info in this little book about a relatively small battle unit . MUCH MORE THAN A BOOK ON THE 4Th LOUISIANA BATTALLION .

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I found myself sifting through generic historical information regarding the battles the Fourth fought in.Without that the text would be much shorter in relation to specific regard to the Fourth Lousiana. There are no photographs of the Fourth, which is understandable, but I would have liked to have seen more research in the uniforms and equipment of this unit. The Fourth was formed of volunteers and went through major battles all over the South.I'd hoped to find details like were they equipped by the state of Louisiana before transport to West Virginia? As Jeff Davis' bodyguard do early photographs of him or of events include the Fourth? When they fell under control of the Army of Tennessee or later in Atlanta or Mobile did they find themselves refitted with new equipment?

I was also disappointed that the biographies so touted in the details before I purchased the book were much less informative than I'd hoped. For instance, Wade Hampton has barely a line however a single trip to the State Archives in Baton Rouge back in 2003 proved him to be the color bearer at least for a time. Readily available were copies of muster roles and signatures, oaths, etc.The flag is housed their as well and although a photograph is reprinted in the book it seems much as the same photo that has been floating around the internet for some years now. There is one picture of a Fourth La soldier, but it is difficult to discern and is copied from an issue of Confederate Veteran I believe, as I have the same picture from an article regarding the Fourth found in that publication. As the soldier seems to be wearing a unique shell jacket, it would have been interesting to know where he may have been issued it and whether or not the photograph was a wartime or postwar photo of the gentleman.Again no new or groundbreaking research is evident in my opinion and there is little to learn from this text that you cannot find from a google search or the Bergeron book on Louisiana units.

It is not my intention to be cruel or unkind in my review.Anyone who has such a love and interest of the Fourth Louisiana has my appreciation.I simply feel that the work lacks substance if you take out the filler information regarding campaigns. The diary entries are interesting though and it has a very nice binding. ... Read more
