5-0 out of 5 stars Koolhass...WHAT?
So, This is a great book that represents a great project.

The project Trans(ient city) was concieved by curator and cultural maverick, Hou Hanru.

The book has amazing essays and unseen images of pieces by seminal artists and thinkers of present day Global culture, like the great piece by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi. Koolhass is a mere ghost in this book, and the real credit should go to Hanru for helping form the project in collaboration with OMA.

If you are interested in the pressing subjects of Urbanism on a global scale, this is a MUST HAVE. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars so you want to go to Amsterdam...
I tried finding this book before I left the U.S. for Amsterdam, but it was impossible.I bought the 2005 version the first day I got there.

The book is small enough to fit in a pocket or purse. There's a good fold out map of Amsterdam, then a second close up map which includes the Red Light District, Dam Square and Centraal Station. There's pictures and information on different types of "goods" available that you'll probably want to check out. You'll find directions and info to parks, hotels and hostels, pubs, places to eat, trams and of course, Coffee Shops. The Coffee Shop Index really gives you an idea of how many coffee shops there are (aaaall around you :D).You might even save a few euro by using a coupon or two included in the guide book.

You'll want to buy a second guide book to Amsterdam if you want to know about anything else unrelated. Like you would...

5-0 out of 5 stars Smokers Guide Was The BEST guide to Amsterdam!
The S-Guide (as the "crew" calls it) was the most informative and comprehensive up-to-date guide on the Amsterdam scene. For first timers there is the history, laws and Do's & Don'ts regarding cannabis coffeeshops, smart shops and homegrow centres. For experienced visitors there is all kinds of "stoner science" and the like. Places to trip, and clubs, health foods, fat foods, and stoney hangouts. Wikid!

All this is wrapped in a great full colour glossy book with heaps of pix and top coffeeshops to visit. There are two maps and the fold-out map was crucial while we stumbled round the city!

All this info, tips, coupons for free beer & coffee, 10% off tattoos, dinners and mushrooms at smart shops, free tear-out filter tips, etc., etc. AND it was pretty funny on top of it all!!!

We bought a few to take home as souvenirs and gifts for friends that could not make the trip. They were drooling over the book and have since sworn to be a part of the next trip!

Thanx heaps, to all the Smokers GUide staff for making such a wonderful book and website! If there was subscriptions I would want this book every year but I guess i'll have to check here at amazon each year for the new version or maybe go to back to Amsterdam to get it in person! ... Read more

Product Description
The Cinema of the Low Countries is a volume in the new 24 Frames series of studies of national and regional cinema. In taking an explicitly text-centered approach, the books in this series offer a unique way of considering the particular concerns, styles and modes of representation of numerous national cinemas around the world by focussing on twenty-four films from the country or region under consideration. This volume concentrates on the practice and reception of film from the Low Countries: The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg. Films of the Low Countries have long been regarded as isolated texts. This book points to the interconnectedness between Low Countries films from different genres, regions, languages and formats, considering their national and international importance. Building on each film's relationship with its particular cultural context, the volume presents twenty-four especially commisioned essays by renowned writers, each one focusing on one key film. The volume covers the work of internationally acclaimed directors such as Joris Ivens, Henri Storck, Paul Verhoeven and the Dardenne Brothers. Key films discussed include Turkish Delight, The Vanishing, Daughters of Darkness, Character, Rosetta and Man Bites Dog. ... Read more

Product Description
André de Vries explores the varied landmarks of Flanders, both rural and urban, to reveal this region's unique character. Considering great cities such as Ghent, Antwerp, and Bruges, he traces the development of a civic culture based on both trade and ideas, in which religion and language play a vital part. Looking too at the Flemish countryside, he explains the role of festivals and folk culture, gluttony and pleasure, in the survival of a strongly local identity. ... Read more
