He has been a Monbusho Scholar in the University of Hokkaido and has visited China on numerous occasions- often as a British Academy exchange scholar. He has taught at the Universidade de Macau and the Universidade de Aveiro and has published an annotated bibliography on Macau (Clio Press, 1989) and on environmental problems in China (Routledge, 1994). In the past several years he has collections on various aspects of China including Repbublican China(Oxford University Press, 2000), the Chinese environment (Oxford University Press, 2000), and evolution of the People's Republic of China since 1949 (Oxford University Press, 2000). He also has conducted a series of land use mapping exercises in Macau since 1983 with related publications appearing the journal, Land Use Policy His work on historical geography has focused on frontier regional development in northern China and northern Japan during the seventeenth century (University of Chicago, 1985).
