Extractions: Under Jiang Zemin's High-handed Policy, the Macau Government Refuses Entrance for Hong Kong Practitioners to Practice Peacefully [Hong Kong] On the early morning of December 16, 2000, we, three practitioners went to Macao from Hong Kong by ferry. We were prepared to practice, submit an appeal letter and to validate Dafa most peacefully on the first anniversary of Macau's return to China. When we approached Customs, we were refused entry. A little while later, several people brought us into a room. One practitioner, called A , was brought into another office. They asked her to fill out the form and then took her book-bag away. When a smaller bag was found in the book-bag, police asked her what it was. She said: "I am a Falun Gong practitioner. This book is Zhuan Falun , which is the book we always carry with us and read everyday." Then A continued to ask: "Why am I not allowed to enter Macau?" The other party was very angry after they heard this and said loudly: "What did you say?" Practitioner

Extractions: Published on Sunday, May 16, 1999 CHIEF EXECUTIVE'S ELECTION In the name of the father HARALD BRUNING Macau's late legendary community leader Ho Yin and his son, chief executive-elect Edmund Ho Hau-wah, have been described by local observers as two masters of consensus. "I think Edmund inherited the charisma of his father, a man who was able to reach a consensus and hold a dialogue among divergent political interests," Hermann Castilho, a retired information officer of the Macau Government, said this week. He described the late Ho as a "political messenger" between China and Portugal and a community leader who was "fully dedicated to the welfare of Macau". Ho Yin was born in Panyu, in the Pearl River Delta about 100km north of Macau, in 1908, when China was still ruled by the Ching dynasty. His father, Ho Cheng-kai, owned a small shop. When he was 13, Ho Yin became an apprentice in a grocer's shop in nearby Guangzhou. He moved to Shunde, a traditional trading centre in the Pearl River estuary, where he became a store manager when he was 16. He then opened a bureau de change in Guangzhou in 1930. The Japanese invasion of Guangzhou in 1938 drove Ho Yin to Hong Kong, where he continued to run his foreign exchange business.

Extractions: Macau, China It gives me great pleasure to welcome Chief Executive Edmund Ho, other officials from the Macau government, distinguished members of Macau society, and representatives of the American community in Macau, to this evening's reception. Let me begin by congratulating Macau on Sunday's legislative election, the first since the establishment of the Special Administrative Region Government in 1999. The smooth and successful conduct of the election reflected the careful preparations and extensive efforts undertaken by the Macau government, and the large voter turnout reflected a desire by the people of Macau to participate actively in the political process and to express their democratic aspirations. These elections mark an important step towards more democratic government. They also highlight Macau's distinct way of life and its special status Congratulations especially to the newly elected members of the Legislative Assembly. We look forward to working with all of you in pursuit of our common goals. This evening's reception is a celebration of the strong friendship and cooperation between the United States and Macau. That friendship was demonstrated most recently in the many expressions of sympathy and condolence we received from the people of Macau after the heinous terrorist attacks of September 11. Your expressions of support - from government leaders, business people, school teachers, clergy and ordinary citizens - were a source of much comfort during this difficult time and very much appreciated.
Extractions: Macau, China I'm very pleased to welcome so many Macau SAR government officials and distinguished members of Macau society, including Americans resident in Macau, to our reception. With the U.S. Senate's passage last week of permanent normal trade relations status for China, this is indeed an auspicious moment for all of us. China's forthcoming accession to the WTO will stimulate economic growth for China and her trading partners, encourage development of the rule of law and greater transparency required by the WTO system, and contribute to China's greater integration into the global economy. While posing challenges, it also represents an opportunity for Macau and its companies. Tonight's Autumn reception, the second since I took up my assignment as the U.S. Consul General to Hong Kong and Macau a little over a year ago, is just one way in which we acknowledge our cooperation and friendship with Macau and all of you. The year since our last Autumn reception has witnessed monumental changes in Macau. The new flags one sees on arrival at the ferry terminal are a bright symbol of the Macau SAR's new identity and the fact that Macau is run by Macau people. Happily, it is also a symbol of the preservation of Macau's unique culture and way of life, and especially the preservation of the many freedoms freedom of religion, freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, and freedom of the press to name a few which the people of Macau continue to enjoy.
