Extractions: Beginning today, passengers at the Portland International Jetport will not be permitted through the security checkpoint without a boarding pass and a government-issued identification, such as a driver's license or a passport. That means that electronically issued "e-tickets," itineraries and vouchers will no longer be sufficient. The policy, recommended by Undersecretary of Transportation for Security Adm. James Loy, is being adopted at airports across the country in order to transfer the screening of passengers from the boarding gates to the security checkpoints, where screening equipment and security personnel are concentrated. Random screening at the gates will continue. "These new measures are aimed at improving efficiency and smoothing the boarding process while maintaining required security levels," said Bob Dyer, the Portland airport's federal security director. Dyer said passengers can get boarding passes from self-service kiosks. Some airlines also offer boarding passes online, which passengers can print in advance.
Extractions: A r c h i v e d I n f o r m a t i o n Educational Programs That Work - 1995 Public and Private School Collaboration. A program for students in grades 10 and 11; the Connecticut Scholars Program. A collaboration for the purpose of providing an opportunity for advanced residential study for academically promising urban school students. Description Public Private School Collaboration makes connections and makes connections work. Where public and private schools have not traditionally joined forces, they do so within a collaborative framework. This allows them to apply their finest resources to meet significant needs. It also allows them to gain the support of leading corporations and foundations as well as research institutions and museums as they seek to respond to those needs. Importantly, a collaboration does not have to involve a boarding school, urban schools, or huge foundation grants. It does require the full participation of public and private school partners, definition of genuine need, and the commitment to work together to find and apply resources to meet that need. After three and a half years, adoptions are now under way from Maine to California. They can be found in boarding schools, urban public high schools, day schools, elementary schools, and more. Winston Churchill once said that opportunity seeks not a "seat but a springboard." That is just what this program supplies. Contact Howard Hand, Director, Summer Programs, Office of Public Private Collaboration, Choate Rosemary Hall, Box 788, 333 Christian Street, Wallingford, CT 06492. (203) 284-5365.

Extractions: The first week of school, Middle School advisors and students participate in short-term enrichment activities called "Curriculum Thrust." The regular school schedule is suspended for these projects, which include interdisciplinary study and off-campus trips. Beginning the year with Curriculum Thrust provides advisors with a unique opportunity to get to know their advisees and to build a sense of community within each advisor group and grade level. Community service is an integral part of Waynflete's program, nurturing an awareness of the diversity and needs of people and organizations in Southern Maine. Middle School advisors help students participate in service projects, including community clean-up, food drives, and volunteering at a Headstart and at local arts programs. Upper School students are required to devote approximately 24 hours annually to volunteer work within the Greater Portland community, including at Waynflete. Students may develop their own placements with help from advisors or may participate in group projects coordinated through the Dean of Students. Periodically throughout the school year, Upper School classes are suspended to enable students to participate in expanded community service projects working with organizations within Greater Portland. At all levels, the program encourages in students a commitment to others and broadens their contact with the larger community.

Extractions: Click here to subscribe to M.A.D. Northeast Auctions, Manchester, New Hampshire P otential buyers packed the cavernous armory at the Center of New Hampshire Holiday Inn in Manchester on the weekend of March 4 and 5 for Ron Bourgeault's 1097-lot Northeast Auctions sale. Later, when the seats were folded and the trucks back in Portsmouth, they counted the money and discovered they'd had a $4.3 million event, Northeast's biggest ever March sale. "There's a lot of money available for antiques these days, which makes for a pretty wild auction scene," Bourgeault commented a few days after the sale. What made that gross particularly satisfying for Bourgeault was that it was reached despite the fact that only five lots broke the $100,000 mark. That means that with 1097 lots (not including A and B lots), and only 26 buy-ins, the average was just over $4000 a lot, not bad when you consider Bourgeault opened Saturday's sale with 189 lots of lustreware. The two top-grossing lots were genuine rarities. The Thaxter family early 18th-century Boston filigree, or quillwork, sconces are two of only 29 or 30 existing examples. One of that number is reputedly in a private collection but in sorely deteriorated condition; the others are in museums.
