    Extractions: Aelian Welcome to my page! My name is Jenn Dearolf, and I am a new assistant professor in the Biology Department at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. I have a longstanding interest in vertebrate biology, specifically how mammals, both neonates and adults, interact with their environment. One of the main ways that animals engage their surroundings is through movement. Movement, in turn, is accomplished through the interaction of muscles with an animal's skeletal system, and thus, I have chosen to study muscle biology. Primarily, I study the construction of muscles from the gross to the molecular level. I then utilize this information to make hypotheses about the function of these muscles. My distinctive approach to studying muscle function has been driven by the species that I have chosen to study, marine mammals. These animals are difficult to study with standarrd physiological methods because of their totally aquatic habitat as well as their protected status. However, to understand how the mammalian body has evolved to engage the marine environment, I have undertaken studies of the morphology of both the locomotor and breathing muscles of bottlenose dolphins. In addition, I have investigated the ventilatory muscles of Florida manatees and their role in buoyancy control.

Manatees are large marine mammals weighing up to 2000 pounds and reaching more than 12 feet in length. Like whales, their large bodies can only be supported in their watery environment. On land, their body weight would crush their internal organs. Manatees are the only marine mammals that are herbivores. Just to keep their big bodies warm, they have to eat up to one tenth of their body weight every day. For the typical manatee that means more than 100 pounds of water plants! Last year alone, 325 manatees were killed in Florida waters 81 of those by collisions with boats. And the number of manatees either maimed or killed each year by boat propellers continues to grow. This injury comes on top of the relentless loss and degradation of manatee habitat. Citizens last year won a court settlement that requires the US Fish and Wildlife Service to propose protections for manatees, and to reduce the number of deaths from collisions with boats. New safe havens are supposed to be established for these endangered sea cows. Send a petition to Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton calling on her to fulfill her duty to protect the manatee. West Indian Manatee ( Trichechus manatus How do you describe a manatee to someone who has never seen one? Their wrinkled, whiskery faces, and big paddle-like tails have led some folks to call them homely. And yet there is an endearing charm to these animals that has fascinated many people who have seen them. The West Indian manatee is a marine mammal that grows to 1,000 pounds and roams U.S. coastal waters from Louisiana to Virginia. Similar to humans, manatees are adapted to the tropics and in winter months must seek warm waters like Florida Bay, where they are often seen by visitors. Manatees pull up and eat the abundant sea grasses and aquatic plants of the bay, consuming 10 to 15 percent of their body weight a day. Their time is divided between eating, resting and playing. They have limited eyesight but good hearing and communicate with one another in squeaks and squeals. Research shows the manatee to be a gentle animal with few enemies. So why are they endangered? Unfortunately, most of their problems are human-related. As our cities expand, their natural habitat is decreased. Added to this problem is the establishment of automatic locks and dams which can harm or kill manatees.
