Between 1966 and 1970 I completed a doctorate and a post-doctoral year at the University of Western Ontario. I came to Carleton in 1971 to teach first year and a course in historical geography. Twenty-five years later I am still teaching at the introductory levels. As well as the historical geography of Canada, I offer a graduate course in methodology in historical geography and a fourth year course on Ontario. My research field is the historical geography of pre-Confederation Canada. I am especially interested in Upper Canada: land and land policy, land prices, the perception of land quality, ethnicity and land, ideology and land and Indian land claims.

French-Canadian voyageurs and their native brides settled in this colony, and a new culture was born: the Métis of western Canada. Other French-Canadian colonists later joined them so that, a century later, francophones had a strong foothold in the area. In 1870, following a mass democratic movement led by Louis Riel, the Manitoba Act created a new province and recognized its linguistic and cultural duality. French and English were accorded equal status in the provincial legislature and before the courts. Two decades of anglophone immigration, however, resulted in a much stronger anglophone presence and, in 1890, the Parliament of Manitoba enacted laws making English the province's only official language and eliminating denominational schools. It was not until 1979, nearly one hundred years later, that Franco-Manitobans succeeded in restoring French to official language status. In 1993, Franco-Manitobans regained the right to administer French-language education. Today, Franco-Manitobans are focusing on economic development by seeking ways to take maximum advantage of market globalization. Endless Horizons: Regional Geography Manitoba's 650,000 square kilometres are characterized by relatively flat terrain. The highest peak in the province is Baldy Mountain, at 831 metres. Reference is often made to Manitoba's "100,000" lakes: these are the remnants of Lake Agassiz, a huge lake that covered much of the province following the retreat of the glaciers.
