Each time the tide retreats it exposes a diverse community of marine animals and plants that are uniquely adapted to survive prolonged exposure to air. The tremendous diversity of life found in this intertidal zone will be the main focus for this course. We will spend the week exploring tidepools, mudflats, rocky shorelines and salt marshes; searching for, observing, and collecting the wide variety of marine organisms that make these areas their homes. We will also have an opportunity to extend our search to sample offshore subtidal and planktonic communities during an excursion aboard the HMSC research vessel.
