Class Purpose The goal of this class is to develop an understanding of how and why cultures developed in the ancient Middle East using both archeological and historical sources and theory. The development and temporal sequence of cultures will be surveyed from the terminal Paleolithic to the Byzantine. More important than learning the sequences of cultures and civilizations is understanding the cultural and ecological forces that shaped some of the most important events in human cultural development. Illumination of these processes will be provided by focusing our attention to specific sites and time periods, while only briefly surveying others. Further, we will acquire an understanding of the way people lived and how the culture worked looking at: population settlement; social structure; the world of work including agriculture; animal husbandry; manufacturing; and the economy including government, trade, and prices.

New students entering the program are required to notify both the major adviser and the MEST director of their intention to participate. Freshmen and sophomores considering this program are advised to begin their study of a Middle East language as early as possible. Students may also earn a minor in Middle East Studies. Requirements for a Major in MEST: To attain a major in MEST, the student is required to have a second major in an approved area such as anthropology, history, political science, geography, foreign languages, comparative literature, journalism, or economics. Up to 9 hours of approved courses in this major may be counted toward the MEST major.     Extractions: The department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations (NMC) has existed under various names at the university since 1844 when it was started with a chair in Hebrew and Oriental languages. In 1996, the existing department of Near Eastern Studies merged with the department of Middle East and Islamic Studies to form the department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations. The department is concerned with the interdisciplinary study of the civilizations and cultures of the Near and Middle East from neolithic times through the Islamic period to the present.     Extractions: In 1994, the American journalist Milton Viorst published a book based on his travels through the Middle East in which he stated, after repeated visits to Damascus, that President Hafiz al-Asad "shunned the creation of a personality cult." Likewise, the scholar Raymond Hinnebusch devoted a two-volume study to the Syrian system and, in Wedeen's words, "he writes as if Asad's cult [of personality] did not exist." If others are so obtuse, Wedeen is not; indeed, her study is singularly focused on deciphering this phenomenon. Why, she asks, did the Asad regime devote such a substantial proportion of its meager resources to the ubiquitous celebration of Asad? Why promote such nonsense as calling him the "premier pharmacist" of the country or suggest that he is immortal? Though laded-down with the obligatory references to Louis Althusser, Michel Foucault, and poststructuralist theorythat any young scholar these days must sow through her writing, Wedeen actually writes in a cogent style and has a refreshingly simple answer: the cult of personality reinforced Asad's power by demonstrating that "his regime can compel people to say the ridiculous and to avow the absurd." If anyone happens to believe the drivel forwarded by the regime, that's a bonus; for all else who are compelled to take in and repeat the cult's platitudes, it serves as a powerful "mechanism of social control." The beauty of it is, the more skeptical a Syrian is, the more the cult oppresses him.
