    Extractions: Men from Pike and Marion counties served in the 13th Regiment Mississippi Militia, under Col. Nixon. The unit is often referred to as "Nixon's Regiment". A brief history of the unit and the battles in which it fought can be found in Military History of Mississippi 1803-1898 by Dunbar Rowland (Spartanburg, South Carolina, The Reprint Company, 1988.) on pages 6-8. A roster of the unit is given in Source Records From Pike County, Mississippi 1798-1910 by Luke Ward Conerly and E.     Extractions: Beginning in 1903, the War Department compiled abstract histories of the movements and activities of Confederate military units. Original muster rolls and returns were the principal sources of information on the caption cards and the envelopes that list officers. Rosters, payrolls, hospital registers, casualty lists, Union prison registers and rolls, parole rolls, and inspection reports were also abstracted. This microfilm publication reproduces the compiled records of Confederate military units. Because many Confederate Army records were lost or destroyed by the end of the war, the compiled military histories of most units are incomplete. Most of the records are arranged alphabetically by state, thereunder by type of unit (cavalry, artillery, or infantry), followed by reserve, militia, local defense, conscript, prison guard, instruction, or other organizations. The arrangement of compiled records for units raised directly or otherwise by the Confederate government is similar except that the latter units are not broken down by state. Numbered units are listed first, followed alphabetically by the named units. There are no record-of-events cards for a small number of state units that were mustered into Confederate service or for militia units that were never mustered into service. Lists of officers were prepared for many state militia units that were not mustered into service and for other organizations for which no rolls were found. These lists, which are filed under "Miscellaneous," appear at the end of records of state units and at the and of records of units raised directly by the Confederate government. With a few exceptions, no lists were prepared for units from North Carolina.

    Extractions: Nancy Justus Morebeck has just written a new book, called , Published by Heritage Quest. I had a chance to read this new one hundred and fifty-two-page book this week. Morebeck’s book describes the record holdings available at the National Archives, many of which are also available via microfilm rentals at a local Family History Center near you.     Extractions: Three years ago I received a photocopy of the original roll book of the Eighth Battalion, Louisiana Heavy Artillery. This unit served in four major campaigns of the War Between the States. The roll book contained the names of 125 men of the original 400. I was determined to find out more about these men and the battles they fought for four years. I started my search at the local library, which has a three-volume set titled Records of Louisiana Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands. It contains information on all men who served the Confederacy from Louisiana. These books provided my first real lead. My primary source on the historical aspect of the unit came from Official Records of The Union and Confederate Armies in The War of The Rebellion. This is a 129-volume set published by the government in the latter part of the 19th century. It was compiled from records created by Union and Confederate armies during the war.
