Timor monitor lizard, V. timorensis These lizards were one of my first breeding successes, and I have produced them annually since 1994. This monitor is only about three and a half inches long when it hatches, and they are lots of fun to watch as they hunt crickets! Although somewhat shyer than the Australian monitors, if you are willing to work with them they settle down and are fairly calm, especially as adults. My adults are about twenty two inches and weigh around a half a pound. There are several different dwarf Indonesian monitors, and there is a good bit of confusion on the subject of their identification. The type of Timor that I am working with was most commonly imported in the early 90's. They are a reddish brown to brown on the back, and a pale yellow underneath. The back is spotted with nice rosettes until the animals reach about one year of age, when the pattern in many animals starts to break up.

Extractions: As the monitors spread across the Earth experiencing different habitats and climates they diversified. Over many millions of years this process has resulted in the emergence of at least seventy or eighty (probably many thousands of) species. Some of them appeared to have died out quickly, whilst other, apparently ancient, species have survived until the present. Many monitor lizards appear to have evolved comparatively recently. It would be nice to know where the monitor lizards first came from, what the early species looked like, how they behaved and why they died out. According to the available evidence monitor lizards and their close relatives the heloderms (Gila lizards) and lanthonotids (earless monitors) probably originated in northern Asia at least 90 million years ago (Pregill et al 1986). At this time the reign of the dinosaurs was coming to an end and flowers had begun to cover the Earth. The oldest monitor lizards known are from Mongolia: Telmasaurus grangeri, Saniwides mongoliensis and Estesia mongoliensis. All of them must have been quite similar to modern monitor lizards in appearance, but the latter possessed grooved teeth which probably transmitted venom in the same manner as modern-day Gila monsters (Pregill et al 1986, Norell et al 1992). The exact relationship between these lizards and the modern heloderms and varanids is not clear.

Extractions: Activity and thermal ecophysiology of two sympatric monitor lizards in Sri Lanka Eric D. Wikramanayake Abstract Bengal monitors, Varanus bengalensis , and water monitors, Varanus salvator , were radio-tracked to determine the relationship between activity patterns and their thermal ecophysiology. Bengal monitors were active in warm, open habitats, but inactive animals used refuges such as tree hollows, burrows, and termite mounds, or remained perched on tree branches. The microclimates in refuges were stable and lower than daytime air temperatures, but the microclimates, of arboreal perches were thermally unstable. The water monitors remained in, or close to, riparian habitats, where the microclimates were relatively stable and cooler than the ambient air temperature. Water monitors also used dens which had numerous tunnels and were much larger than the burrows used by the Bengal monitors. Bengal monitors were usually active during the late morning and afternoon, when daytime temperatures were high. When Bengal monitors emerged from refuges, they basked for over 4 hrs. Water monitors, however, became active earlier in the day, and did not bask. On average, Bengal monitors were active for a smaller proportion (12%) of the daytime radio-tracing period, compared to the water monitors (29%). Both species remain inactive for several consecutive days.

Extractions: MONITORS - Giants among Lizards About forty species of monitor lizards are found from Africa, through India and south-east Asia to Australia. The genus to which monitors all belong - Varanus - contains the world's largest lizard, the much-feared Komodo Dragon from Indonesia which may reach three metres in length and has been known to prey on humans. All monitors are similar in appearance, with strong limbs, powerful claws, flexible neck and extended, whip-like tail. None are poisonous, although the Gila Monster of Mexico (the world's only poisonous lizard) is distantly related. Monitors are unique among lizards in having a forked tongue, similar to that of snakes. Just two species occur in Southern and East Africa, but both are impressive reptiles and are frequently seen. Nile Monitor The Nile Monitor (also known simply as the Water Monitor) occurs in temperate and warm areas with permanent water and is seldom found far from rivers, lakes or dams. It is an outstanding swimmer and quickly takes refuge to water - usually with a loud splash - when threatened. It is most often seen basking on a rock or overhanging tree branch, and sometimes allows humans to approach quite closely.

Extractions: Hi, my name is David Pepin. I am a graduate student in the Evolutionary and Population Biology Program in Washington University's Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences . For my doctoral thesis I am working on the evolutionary history of monitor lizards. My research uses DNA, morphological, and fossil evidence to reconstruct the phylogenetic history for monitor lizards and lineages to which they are closely related. The phylogenetic results are then used to test a variety of comparative questions regarding allometry, life-history, and habitat use.
