3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I was looking for books to help with the behavior of my macaw. This book is full of pictures, beautiful pictures. However, I really need help with my bird.Maybe I didn't read the description thoroughly enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars "For the Parrot & Art Lover Both"
This is an oversized book of vividly colored line-drawings of the Cockatoo, Macaw, and Amazon parrots species. It's a truly magnificently produced book with Elizabeth Butterworth's beautiful artistic drawings that are just so realistic. You could actually frame many of these drawings, they are that good. There's a wonderful introduction about all these parrots by Elizabeth that is inspirational. If you're a lover of birds, or have companion parrots yourself, don't miss this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
One of the best bird drawings I have seen, they are so well done, that one wishes to frame each one of the them, if you like birds and you like colour this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parrots, MacAws and Cockatoos : The Art of Elizabeth Butterw
If you are a lover of cockatoo, macaw and amazon, the line-drawings of these birds will take your breath away. When I first opened the book, I gasped! Ms. Butterworth has captured the essence of their character, evenmore so than a photograph. The line-drawings in this book deserve to beframed and showcased in a prominent position in your home. I bought 3books. I framed pictures from the first, and kept the second for reference, and gave the third book as a gift to Dr. Bernadette Plair who is with theCincinnati Zoo. Dr. Plair recently (March 2000), successfully reintroducedthe blue and gold macaw back into the wild in Trinidad. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Primer on Macaws
I had trouble finding this book and finally ordered it off of an Australian website. It took a while to arrive but it was well worth the wait. This book has excellent and complete information on keeping macaws in both aviaries and as companion birds. The last section of the book is dedicated to discussion all species of Macaws including those extinct in the wild - the Lear's Macaw and the Spix's Macaw. It also includes very good information on the dwarf macaw species'.This book is hard to find but if you're new to macaw keeping it is well worth the effort. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, fun, fun!
This is the third book in the Robyn Devara series, and it takes the reader on a wild ride into the jungle of Costa Rica. Field biologist Robyn Devara is compelling and very likeable. The rest of the cast of characters is interesting and well written. The fast moving plot, amazing setting (it's like you're actually there!) and lots of humour makes this a really excellent read. ... This digital document is an article from Wilson Bulletin, published by Thomson Gale on June 1, 2005. The length of the article is 5670 words. From the author: The Blue-winged Macaw (Primolius maracana) has disappeared from most of southern Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay; its remaining southern stronghold is the 2,179-ha Caetetus Reserve, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. We estimated the macaw's population inside the reserve (88 individuals) and examined how it and other parrots use the extra-reserve landscape, which is dominated by coffee plantations and pasturelands. Flight activity of the macaw and Scaly-headed Parrot (Pionus maximiliani) declined with distance from Caetetus, although many macaws flew to the vicinity of the reserve to roost. Two other species, Canary-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris versicolurus) and White-eyed Parakeet (Aratinga leucophthalmus), used the landscape independent of the reserve itself. We recorded parrots in 90% of our 1-[km.sup.2] study plots outside (<12 km) the reserve, but no species was recorded using pasture, coffee or rubber/orange plantations, or scrub habitats, which composed 80% of the landscape around the reserve. Only four habitat types were used by any species. Primary and secondary forests were the habitats most preferred; Eucalyptus plantation habitat was the only totally anthropogenic habitat used. Clearly, protection, and preferably augmentation, of forest cover around Caetetus may be crucial for the macaw's survival at this important site. Received 2 March 2004. accepted 11 January 2005.

5-0 out of 5 stars The bird that went to college"
For a true story, this is one of the funniest and clever accounts of the activities of a pet bird. The macaw is the largest and most intelligent of the parrot family, and Mac more than lives up to its reputation. Wolfe's lively narrative style will appeal to both children and adults, as he recounts the unexpected and humorous adventures of his pet who lived in his college office. The colorful illustrations are equally engaging, as done by Hopi Indian artist Neil David, Sr. as they bring to life the many stories of the "bird that went to college." (Review by Caecilia M. 3-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Little Book
A Guide to Parrots and Macaws is a handy little book to have with the beautiful pictures and short descriptions of several parrot species in the back one third of the book.

In the chapter "Choosing Parrots and Macaws", David Alderton give brief information on various thoughts and differences in choosing pet birds or breeding birds.

In the chapter "Keeping Parrots and Macaws in the Home, he gives some very good information about cages and cage placement.Unfortunately he then goes on to give an outdated method of wing clipping.

The chapter "Keeping Parrots and Macaws in the Garden, gives wonderful details on building outdoor aviaries for all sizes of parrot species.

The "Feeding Parrots and Macaws" chapter has some good information, but is outdated in some parts.Although he does give the basic seed/pellet/fruits/vegetables diet, he indicates the need for grit for digestion.

The "Basic Health Care" chapter lists several disease possibilities and stresses the fact that you must take your bird to veterinarian.I would stress that it must be an avian veterinarian or at the least a veterinarian who regularly treats birds.

The chapter Breeding and Rearing Parrots and Macaws explains methods of sexing birds that are not sexually dimorphic since knowing the sex of your birds is certainly the first step in breeding them. He gives details on the various nestboxes for the various sizes and species of parrots.

This book was published in 1989 and as with many books that are a little older, some of the information is outdated. We have learned a lot about bird care over the last few years that was not known in 1989.

If you can find this book at a reasonable price - taking into consideration that it is quite a small book (95 pages) - I would suggest getting it.The 90 colour photographs and illustrations are wonderful.
