The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: MACAW (Medium Access Collision Avoidance Wireless) is a new MAC protocol for wireless LANs proposed by Bharghavan et al. Ref. 2 based on Karn's MACA protocol Ref.3. In this thesis the performance characteristics and operational behavior of the protocol are investigated The approach taken was to simulate the protocol by OPNET 2.4c of MIL3, Inc. and determine the utilizations and mean delay times of the transmitters under various operational conditions. Also a new performance measure was defined in terms of utilization and mean delay time. Our investigation has shown that the optimum performance of the MACAW protocol occurs at approximately 50% channel load. We have also shown the importance of the backoff algorithm, and finally, we have shown that carrier sensing dramatically improves the performance of the protocol for high channel loads. Simulation results showed that decreasing the backoff increase rate by 15% gave twice as good performance results for the small number of transmitting nodes cases. When carrier sensing was introduced to the protocol, dramatic performance increases resulted under heavy loads (60% to 80% channel loads). This study reports on three scarlet macaw (Ara macao) reintroduction projects using hand-raised birds in Peru and Costa Rica. The habitats at the release sites ranged from pristine tropical forest to forest fragments in an agricultural matrix. The combined first-year survival was 74% and the annual post first-year survival was 96%. Survival rates were very high despite a wide range in predator communities. Number of birds released explained 70% of the variation in survival with birds from larger releases having higher survival rates. Behavioral evidence suggests that birds established at the site facilitated survival of later releases. Breeding attempts were recorded at all three sites and hand-raised birds with wild mates successfully fledged young in Peru. Supplemental feeding post-release played an important role in keeping the birds near the release site and facilitating social interactions. This work shows that properly socialized hand-raised macaws can survive and breed in the wild but that ex-pets are not good release candidates. ... Read more

This is a good starter book
This book provides details on the distribution and ecology of macaws.It also provides information on extinct species, as well as unconfirmed species.The book is obviously written by a breeder/hobbyist and tends to discount scientific studies in favor of anectdotal information.Range maps and ecological data on the species are interesting, and provide valuable information on the various macaws.The book was originally written in 1983, and has some out dated information, but all in all it is an informative and easy read, and should be part of any macaw lover's library.

This book provides interesting details on both living and extinct species of macaws.Detailed distribution maps and life history information provide details on the species and their habitats.The book is obvioulsy written by a hobbyist/breeder, and tends todiscount science and research in favor of breeder's records and anectdotal information.It is also a bit alarmist (but possibly rightly so) regarding the loss of macaw habitat in the American tropics.Also it has some out dated information on macaw care, stemming from the fact that it was written in 1983 and later translated.All in all it is an easy read, provides interesting information, and is worth acquiring. ...
