5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing comprehensive review!
My AP Econ teacher wanted us to buy this book as a replacement to the textbook but in the end decided to use the other McGraw Hill review guide. But I had already bought this.

I was frustrated with some concepts so I turned to this book as a last resort.

BEST BOOK EVER.

It is written in colloquial terms. This book really helped me understand Micro and Macro. I used this book according to what we were doing in class throughout the year. I hilighted like crazy and made tons of notes also.

It helped me do so well in the class, especially the tests.

When it came time for the AP Exams, I reread this book. I went back and read everything, made flash cards, reread my sidenotes.

I got my exam results back today and I got A 5 ON BOTH EXAMS! :]

It is a very comprehensive guide. Although, like with most concepts, you have to reread chapters several times. But that's not because of the book but because Economics the subject.

If you are deciding between any other book and this one, and you are the detail-oriented and/or studious type who likes things explained step-by-step then BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I bought this book for the Microeconomic CLEP and it was well worth the money!! I would suggest this, and even other editions, to anyone who need to study in a hurry!

5-0 out of 5 stars great review overall
hey, so I took ap micro and ap macro last May. 5 steps to a 5 has done a great job on reviewing the topics. The practice problems and practice exams are well representative to the real exam. I was shocked to see how similar the free responses were on the real AP exam. They were almost the same. Piece of advice, know how to do every single question in the practice exam and you will do well on the AP exam. Don't think that it won't appear on the test, because it will. The only problem I had was that ap micro was after ap macro and I didn't have time to go back and review ap micro plus this year's micro was harder than previous year. I thought I had a solid 5, but I think I am either getting a 3 or 4. However, I am pretty confident that I am getting a 5 on ap macro. Great book, buy it and you won't regret.

edit: I got 5 on both micro and macro, buy this book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AP Economics teacher highly recommends
As an AP Economics teacher, I recommended 5 Steps to a 5 to my students this past year. The students gave it high marks for its thorough review of both micro and macro economics. The author provides strong pointers for each concept and plenty of practice questions. The students' results were outstanding: a 100 percent pass rate on micro and 98 percent on macro, with mostly 4s and 5s on the two exams. My students worked hard throughout the year, but this review guide helped a lot with test preparation. Having used the Princeton "Cracking the AP" book in previous years, I found 5 steps to a 5 to be thesuperior review book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best available AP Prep book
This book is simply the best because:
1. The explanations are good, concise and to the point.
2. The practice tests are harder than the real thing, so if you can get 80% correct on the practice test you'll easily get a 5 on the Real AP test.

Just FYI I have gotten fives on all five AP's I've taken and I've used Barrons to prepare for all of them.

I have look over some of my friends books that aren't made by barrons and they simply aren't as rigorous, if you want a 5 get a Barron's book, if you want a 3 princton review or 5 steps to a 5.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not that good...
Me and my friend decided to buy this book for or APs because our teacher recommended it. But we were disappointed. Its not that the book was bad but because it was very hard to follow and too complicated. The explanations were too complex and there is only one practice test. It was very hard to get even one concept out of it. I ended up going to the test totally clueless and unconfident. I just came back and I totally feel bad about how I preformed on the test.
I don't recommend it. Get the 5 steps to a 5 my friend ditched this book and got it and totally recommends it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!!
I got this book to, obviously, prepare me for the AP Econ exams. What I like about this book is that it is very easy to read and the author does a great job keeping the reader focused with his humor and mnemonics. For instance, if the Fed wants to increase the supply of money circulated, the Fed would buy bonds: "Buy Bonds = Bigger Bucks."

I took a look at the Princeton Review version at my local borders (I actually compared the two).I get very meticulous when comparing due to my OCD.I didn't like the Princeton Review version because it didn't engage me as much as5-steps. 5-Steps dedicated each chapter to a particular section, which made it very easy for me to organize the information in my head! The quizzes and key terms after each chapter also helps with retaining the information. Also, the test-taking strategy in the beginning and in the answers after taking the practice exams are very helpful. I like how it stresses on drawing BIG, easy-to-read graphs over writing long, time-consuming paragraphs.

I don't ever take the time to write reviews, but I felt guilty not to for this book after receiving my score yesterday (I got a 5!!!).That is one-less class I need to take at Wharton!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
My son used this book while studying for the AP Micro and Macro exams. He found it to be very well organized, with helpful information, useful practice problems, and great explanations. He felt like this book provided excellent preparation for both AP tests. He scored a 5 on both tests! Highly recommended! He also used the Princeton Review AP guide but felt that the 5 steps book was more helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative and well-written
the style in which this book is written reads easily because it is entertaining yet at the same time is full of information. the graphs do get a bit old and seem overly simplistic at times, but as far as the illustration of concepts is concerned they are effective. not a bad investment if you plan to take the AP exam or just refresh your memory of economics.

Product Description
In the early 1990s, trade and labor economists, noting the fall in wages for low-skilled workers relative to high-skilled workers, began to debate the impact of trade on wages. This debate—which led to a sometimes heated exchange on the role of trade versus the role of technological change in explaining wage movements—continues today, with the focus now shifting to workers in the middle of the wage distribution. In Offshoring in the Global Economy, noted economist Robert Feenstra offers a synthesis of fifteen years of research—linking his own work to related research by others—on the globalization of production and its relation to wage movements.

Feenstra first contrasts the views of trade economists Paul Krugman and Edward Leamer, who both relied (to different ends) on the Heckscher–Ohlin model. He then examines the new type of trade model whereby the production processes transfer across countries. Feenstra suggests a new calculation of the factor content of trade that demonstrates the durability of the Heckscher–Ohlin model.

Feenstra examines as well the impacts of business cycle volatility, prices, and productivity on the macroeconomics of offshoring. In a concluding chapter, he addresses the broader implications of both empirical and theoretical work on offshoring and suggests directions for future research.

Product Description
Taking a "just-in-time" approach by introducing material just as it is needed to develop an argument, MACROECONOMICS: A CONTEMPORARY APPROACH, Eighth Edition, truly leads by example. In a decidedly non-condescending tone, McEachern assumes that students are already intuitively familiar with many economic concepts through their own life experiences. These life experiences are then explained to students as economic concepts with clear and interesting exposition, relevant case studies, and a clean focused design. The text's major applications take the form of case studies that are meant to be read and therefore are integrated into the flow of each chapter. With this eighth edition, the book's well-crafted approach is enhanced with resources--such as Aplia and CengageNOW--that will help your students improve their understanding and will help you streamline tasks and save valuable time. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect scores
I actually used the 2006 edition of this book but I'm sure it hasn't gotten worse.

My school didn't offer economics, so this was the only book I used to prepare for the AP exam. I read the book about 3 days in advance. Got two 5's.

Usually I'm not a huge fan of Kaplan for biology and other subjects that are more memorization-based, but for conceptual things like Econ., this was really helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Condition
When I received this book, it was nearly in excellent condition.I was very pleased with my shipment and especially pleased with how quick I received it in the mail. It arrived just in time for my class the next week.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Happy
I purchase a used book that was advertised as being in almost new shape.True to their word, the book was in great shape with no marks.Thank you!

4-0 out of 5 stars An Adequate Text
Principles of Microeconomics by Case, Fair, and Oster 9th edition was an adequate text for an introductory microeconomics class, assuming students received a good high school foundation in microeconomic terminology. Otherwise, the textbook will be confusing because it really stresses the mathematical and graphic foci of economics.

For example, the book places a lot of emphasis on cost and revenue curves: for example, it emphasizes time and time again where firms should be producing to make a profit, whether the firm be a perfectly competitive firm or a monopolistic firm. The book does not really talk a whole lot about firms in-between, but then determining profit in a monopolistically competitive firm or oligopoly is far more challenging than the hypothetical perfectly competitive firm.

Overall, I was satisfied with this textbook for an introductory level microeconomics course. It would have been nice if the book would have stressed norminative ecomomics a little more, rather than simply focusing almost entirely on positive economics, but I guess the authors felt that students would have received considerable instruction time for norminative economics in high school.

Also, along with the book, as a study resource, were PowerPoints (although I am not certain if you can access these PowerPoints when purchasing a text on Amazon.com, unless inside the book you can find an access code to online resources from the publisher).

The PowerPoints were pretty helpful in sumarizing the main points - the major themes, especially information like: when in a monopoly, profit is maximized where MR = MC (i.e. the monopoly will produce as long as MR is greater than MC), while in perfect competition, a firm will produce as long as the price is greater than MC. Because it is an introductory-level texts, 'exceptions' to the rules are not frequently discussed.

Overall Opinion:

The textbook is decent. I have read economics textbooks I liked better. I have suffered though economics texts that were worse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great transaction all together.
This book came in a good condition, but had stickers all over the front.I had to pull them off to make sure it was the right book for my class, and when I did it said "instructor edition" underneath.I wrote the seller and they quickly assured me it was the right book.I compared it to my classmate's and it is identical.I just thought it was a little weird that it would come with the stickers in the first place, it's kind of deceiving. It would've been easier just to say it was the "Instructor's edition" and ship it as is.Right?Well the cover just looks like crap now but I am glad I found this book at such a great price, and that it shipped so fast.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relative book
This textbook is very easy to understand and the examples are interesting because the authors make it relative to the average student, whether young or old.
This book by far exceeds my first Macroeconomics text and I give a big thumbs up to those who contributed to the design and text in this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
Totally made sense without esoteric formulas that we usually associate with Economics. Used it as a reference for the Managerial Economics class in the MBA program since I needed to brush up on the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for learning key concepts
I bought this book based on recommendations from CBE (credit by examination) forums. After reading it, I agree that it is an excellent resource for the microeconomics exam.It is written in a conversational style-- easy to follow and understand. The author is mindful that his readers are beginners and he proceeds very slowly, with many examples, so that the knowledge of microeconomics builds slowly, steadily and (surprise!) easily. It's a great book for learning key concepts. If you are beginning a study of microeconomics, read this book first. It will give you a good foundation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Microecomonics DeMystified
As a MBA student taking Managerial Economics, I found this book extremely helpful. It removes a great deal of confusion and foggy Economic mumbo gumbo, enabling the reader to truly understand Microeconomic concepts. The quizzes at the end of each chapter assists greatly in your understanding of how well you have grasped what was presented. The final exam at the end of the booked helped me with the final exam in my course.I strongly recommend this book for any Economics course for which microecomonics is an integral part. The only real thing of value that I can share is perhaps the fact that I got an A in the class and a great deal was due to this book!I hope more are to come. This author knows his stuff. ... Product Description
This text provides a lean and lively introduction to basic ideas of microeconomic principles with a sound level of theoretical rigor. It has been carefully crafted in terms of both content and supporting pedagogy to keep students focused on learning and applying the central ideas used in economic analysis. Its objective is to be a study "tool" for students and a complement to, rather than a substitute for, the instructor, departing from the "encyclopedic" approach taken by most other texts.Pedagogy and applications are designed to maintain a focus on the fundamentals and allow flexibility for instructors to bring in additional material as they choose. In-text Internet links and a dedicated Web site provide opportunities and exercises for students to access and analyze additional real-world economic applications. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple, but Biased
(Note: A unbiased review is below. Skip this part if you just want to know how the textbook works.)Perhaps it is just because it is Microeconomics, or because I come from California, but this text leans towards the conservative side. They obviously portray the government's role in the economy in a negative light, by suggesting examples that would only make the government look bad, such as increases in taxes, or putting in price floors/ceilings in wrong spots. Also, it promotes more conservative ideas, such as subsidies, but of course, it would not say where that money would come from. If you are on the fence politically, it would most likely drift you towards the Republican spectrum.

(Start from here if you want an unbiased review.)
This text is pretty good for those starting out, wanting to learn the basics. If you have already taken Macroeconomics, sorry, because it's gonna feel like review for the first couple of chapters. The main thing that makes this textbook good is that the layout feels like this: Definition --> Examples (lots of them) and some more stuff. It's not boring at all, since the main emphasis is on the scenarios proposed. All in all, it is quite understandable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good service
I got the book in a just a few days, and it was like new, so I was very happy with this seller.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microeconomics: Principles and Applications
I received this product in a timely fashion and in good condition.I am so grateful to Amazon for helping me save money and locating my textbook from a reliable source.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for review
In this study guide, Hall and Lieberman provide an excellent accompaniment to their brilliant text. All the exercises are very clear, as is the answer key, which gives one the opportunity to see where one went wrong in aparticular concept. The scope of the study guide is exactly the same asthat of the book. Basically, if you can do everything in the guide, youhave mastered their concepts. ... Read more

Product Description
From Catastrophe to Chaos: A General Theory of EconomicDiscontinuities presents and unusual perspective on economicsand economic analysis. Current economic theory largely depends uponassuming that the world is fundamentally continuous. However, anincreasing amount of economic research has been done using approachesthat allow for discontinuities such as catastrophe theory, chaostheory, synergetics, and fractal geometry. The spread of suchapproaches across a variety of disciplines of thought has constituteda virtual intellectual revolution in recent years. This book reviewsthe applications of these approaches in various subdisciplines ofeconomics and draws upon past economic thinkers to develop anintegrated view of economics as a whole from the perspective ofinherent discontinuity. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Satisfactory Econ Reference BUT ANOTHER/CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE
I used this book for my introductory microeconomics course.I thought it should be known that there is another version of this book with ISBN 9780136022008. It has EXACTLY the same content as the regular text but is labelled as the student value edition. Instead of being a book, the pages are on loose leaf paper. This was great since it could still be carried around collectively in a binder or I could take certain chapters out to class. It is possible to find this other version for a lower price than that of the normal paperback text..

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
I used this book as my only study materials for the AP test in both macroeconomics and microeconomics. I ended up with a 5 in micro and 4 in macro. My teacher didn't really teach at all through the year, so I think that the results are due solely to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this review book to study for the AP Microeconomics exam and was pleased by its coverage of all the necessary topics.Even though the book looks small, there really is no need for more material. When I took the Microeconomics exam, I was surprised by how easy it was.To study for the exam's free response section, be sure to check out previous College Board AP Micro free response exams and their answers. They follow the same basic pattern of topics and form of questions.I received a 5 on the exam.I will use the book again this year for the Macroeconomics section.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
Upon studying for the AP Macroeconomics test, I found the Barrons book to be useless. The sample tests were a joke because they are nothing like the actual AP tests.I took an AP Macroeconomics course in school and the Barrons book did nothing to enhance my knowledge.I would highly recommend the Kaplan AP Economics book because it has challenging sample questions with full explanations to the answers (unlike Barrons). This book does not help one to get a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics test.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly whata student needs.
I decided to independently study for the AP Macroeconomics exam my junior year.I had not taken any classes previously that would have helped me on the test.In addition to the Barron's book, I purchased the Princeton Review and the Cliffs Notes books.Thereis simply no comparsion-- the Barron's book is FAR superior. It does not waste the reader's time delving into topics not on the exam.It covers exactly what the student needs to know.
The other two books I mentioned are excessively light on some topics, and I am confident that if I would have taken the test with one or both of them, I would not have done nearly as well. But the Barron's book gave me everyting I needed.
At the end of each chapter(as is the case with all Barron's AP books) there are 15 multiple-choice questions covering the material from the chapter and a free response question.I found these questions relevant and instructive. The sample AP exam in the back of the book is well done.
Thanks to this book, I am confident I got a 5 on the AP Macroeconomics exam. There was just one multiple choice question I didn't recognize.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars I independent studied using this book
I never took the AP microeconomics course offered at my school. I just used this book and the PR book. Overall, this book is great in that it teaches all the information needed to ace the test. However, the questions in the practice test are not reflective of those on the real test. Also, sometimes, this book delves too deeply into the subject. It provides far more information than is necessary to get a 5 on the test. It is also more boring than the Princeton Review book. Information is presented in paragraph forms rather than in bulleted form, making it more unorganized. However, knowing this book back to front will easily get the job of getting a 5 on the AP test accomplished. ... Read more
