Book Description
When economists claim that rules are coordinating devices, they do not explain how those rules operate in the reality of organizational life. Rules do not indicate behavior, since their most important characteristic is their remoteness from the solution. Thus, rules are merely frameworks for action requiring constant interpretation. This book is grounded in Wittgenstein's understanding of rules as having significance only in the course of their application. It focuses on the disindexation process and on the consequences of a team productivity bonus in an electronic workshop in the Paris Metro. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GreatBook - Samuelson and Nordhaus Are Awesome
This is a classic Macro text used for many Intro to Macro-Econ.

I used a similiar text (many editions before) when I took my first econ class in college over 10 yrs ago.

This is a great book, easy to understand and fluid reading.

Thumbs Up!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars great book for starters in economic theory ,esp for students
It's a great book for first year business studentsand all those who want to learn something about basic principles of macroeconomics and the influence it has on everyday business activities

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to macroeconomic theory
In comparison with other macroeconomic texts around it should get 5 stars. It starts with a historical perspective of the crisis in economics at thetime of Keynes, setting the picture for why anyone bothered to inventmacroeconomics in the first place. It then rapidly proceeds to introduce the major schools of macroeconomics and to develop the relevant ideas andmodels. It is an ideal introduction for the interested or serious studentand manages to be exciting as well as fairly comprehensive. If you'retaking an introductory macroeconomics course, get this book instead of yourtext. If you're coming from outside the economics profession and have amind of your own, this ones for you. ... From the author: America's aging coupled with high and growing old--age health and pension benefits augers for much higher payroll taxes, with damaging effects on the U.S. economy. This prognosis is supported by our analysis of a detailed dynamic life-cycle general equilibrium model. The FairTax, which proposes to replace the federal payroll, personal income, corporate income, and estate tax with a progressive consumption tax, offers a potential alternative to this dismal economic future. According to our simulation model, these policy changes would lead to major improvements in the U.S. capital stock, long-run real wages and the well-being of the majority of Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Microecomonics DeMystified
As a MBA student taking Managerial Economics, I found this book extremely helpful. It removes a great deal of confusion and foggy Economic mumbo gumbo, enabling the reader to truly understand Microeconomic concepts. The quizzes at the end of each chapter assists greatly in your understanding of how well you have grasped what was presented. The final exam at the end of the booked helped me with the final exam in my course.I strongly recommend this book for any Economics course for which microecomonics is an integral part. The only real thing of value that I can share is perhaps the fact that I got an A in the class and a great deal was due to this book!I hope more are to come. This author knows his stuff. ... Book Description
A cornerstone, Macroeconomics: Private and Public Choice is considered to be the best existing principles of economics textbooks emphasizing free markets. The strengths of this text are its clarity, emphasis on the economic way of thinking and its application to the world around us. Macroeconomics: Private and Public Choice has an amazing approach to introducing students to a moderate amount of economic data analysis while applying the concept to a real-world story. This edition had added a new introductory Chapter 4 "Supply and Demand: Applications and Extensions" allowing the instructor a second full chapter to help develop the basic foundation of supply and demand. Chapter 5 "The Economic Role of the Government" and Chapter 6 "The Economics of Collective Decision Making" now stress the role of government and the economics of collective decision making. Chapter 16 "Economic Growth" integrates growth into the macroeconomic coverage. At the end of the text are extra Applications and Special Topics that allow instructors to include a more involved application in classroom discussions. The authors continue to succeed at enabling students to understand the basic concepts and apply those concepts that are central to the principles of economics class. ... Read more

Book Description
Traditional development economics has recently been revolutionized by the application of new economic tools and concepts. Development Microeconomics is the first in a series of books which will look at the entire spectrum of development economics issues, combining the strengths of conventional developmental thought with the insights of contemporary mainstream economics. The main new conceptual tool used is the application of the theory of imperfect information and the effects this has on the the behaviour of economic agents. This helps to explain why perfect competition models rarely have success when dealing with developing economies. The authors also stress the necessity of balance in dealing with many of the classic problems in development studiesthe importance of both the individual as economic agent and cultural norms as the framework of social behaviour; the dual relationship between equity and efficiency in economic policy-making; the importance of market rivalry and the potential of market breakdown. Designed specifically for graduate students, this book analyses the key microeconomic problems facing the very poorest sectors of developing economies. It utilises simple theoretical models, and is presented in a compact and analytical form. High technical sophistication is avoided, and the only pre-requisite is some familiarity with the tools of general microecomic theory at a first-year graduate or advanced undergraduate level. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A nice and short compendium
This is a fine and succint compendium of some of the most important results in modern Development MicroEconomics. The book is well written, and it can be a very useful guide for advanced undergraduate students, or graduate students who are looking for a short and good guide to some of the most important recent (and less recent) contributions to this literature. This books is a good complement to Deaton's "The Analysis of Household Survey", which truly is the bible of development microeconoics. While Deaton's textbook also surveys a huge amount of empirical results (covering also wonderfully well most of the necessary econometrics), Bardhan and Udry mostly discuss the theory, and the underlying models. Among the covered topics are: Intrahousehold allocation of resources, labor markets, migration, rural land markets, risk and insurance, credit markets, income distribution, technology diffusion (and many others). Chapters are pretty much self-contained, and about 20 pages long. This book really is an excellent starting point if you are looking for a graduate-level introduction to one of the literatures covered here. Most of the math is not forbidding, but advanced calculus, statistics & probability, integrals and derivatives and some dynamic programming will be necessary to understand the book. Highly recommended, I am just sorry I only discovered this book after I left grad school....

5-0 out of 5 stars a very useful distillation of research
This book synthesizes recent research in development microeconomics which extends the field beyond Walrasian general equilibrium paradigm to incorporate such features as informational asymmetries, network externalities, and various types of coordination failures.Topics covered in this volume include such things as household economics, rural credit markets, and the adoption of new techniques. The emphasis is on "applied theory" -- empirical evidence on the theoretical models is mentioned, but not discussed in depth. The arguemnts are presented verbally, graphically, and mathematically. The writing is quite clear. Numerous references are cited in the text and given at the end of each chapter. This small book would be very useful to graduate students and academics.Undergraduate students will probably find the math a little heavy. ... Read more

Book Description

Taylor covers long-run economic fundamentals first, followed by a thorough study of business cycles, allowing students to fully understand the fundamental determinants of economic growth before examining short-term economic fluctuations. Both AD/AS and ADIA coverage are included in this edition. Taylor offers a refinement of the classic AD/AS diagram to take price adjustment and inflation into account—a more realistic approach for students who have already explored topics in long-run growth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Begining Macroeconomics Text
An introduction to macroeconomics written by the creator of the Taylor Rule.It begins with an overview of economics in general including market economies and the supply/demand model.Later topics include measuring GDP, the spending allocation model, unemployment, productivity, money, inflation, fiscal policy, monetary policy, financial markets, and international trade. The text has bright, eye-catching graphics and convenient review boxes placed throughout the chapters but tends to focus more on the U.S. economy than economies in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars An innovative approach
This book offers a new path to introduce us in macroeconomic studies, quite innovative if we compare to its congenerous, however very focused on rational expectations contribuitions. The authors suggests we must priorize our comprehension about the long term economic flutuactons, in opposite of the traditional ones, which dedicate the last pages to develop these subjects; in Hall & Talylor's book, the reader is introduced to the basics frameworks and modern theories soon in the firsts chapters. So, the natural consequence of their proposal is the loss of the primacy of Hicks's IS-LM model - as a basic framework tradionaly adopted as necessary to understanding the macroeconomics fundamentals - to the contemporaries economics growth theories, enriching it with many "real world" examples about its approaches. The only restriction I do is the negligence, or a little more emphasis, on other kind of approaches in macroeconomic thought (the post-keynesians contribuitions, for example), causing us the sensation that the macroeconomics reality is restricted to rational expectations workings. For an approach which priorize the evolution of the schools of macroeconomics thought, I recomend the Froyen's book. In spite of that, is an excellent introduction to macroeconomic theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes studying economics easy! Thumbs up!
This book is well organized to help student learn macroeconomics. It hasthe best utilization of pedagogical features (not just graphs, captions andcolors) I've ever seen. I found key term call-outs, section reviews, andkeypoint outlines to be the most helpful. I appreciate the efforts ofreducing the amount of reading necessary to understand the concepts.
Ifyou are not a lazy student, you will have lots of case studies, newsanalysis, econ puzzles, and biographies to broaden your breath. All thesefeatures are well organized so that you can read efficiently, thanks to theingenious layouts.
I am actually here to look for other books by Mr.Taylor to support my current textbooks. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Economic Superstitions 101
All you need to know about this book is that it's written by a useful idiot helping out the government who makes completely false claims such as that:

1.) The Federal Reserve protects the dollar, never mind that the dollar has lost over 90% of its value since the Federal Reserve was created.

2.) The government should work to guarantee full employment, never mind that government policies and regulations are what cauase massive unemployment to begin with and government jobs themselves are usually less useful to the rest of society, such as paper shuffling.

3.) The government should manage international trade, never mind that massive problems that have come about because of institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the Orwellian titled North and Central American Free Trade Agreements.Never mind that regulation of international trade usually exploits consumers for politically-connected domestic interests.

4.) The government should protects us from pollution of our environment when it's places where government is biggest such as in D.C. where it's usually dirtiest.

5.) The government can create in increased standard of living for all, yet Americans' standard of living has decreased for nearly thirty years due to the growth of government and its having its hands in almost every area of the economy.

6.) There is such a thing as overall demand in the economy when there really isn't amongst consumers.

7.) Investments and capital are the same thing.Actually they're very diverse.

8.) Perhaps the biggest superstition is the attempt to separate micro from macro in economic affairs and claim that the decisions of individuals don't affect the overall picture. This is false because the decisions of numerous individuals is what makes up the overall picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good intro to macro issues
I thought that in general the book was pretty good.I liked the essay format as they were good sized chunks that explored a single topic well.It is a very easy read, especially at a chapter or two a day.I would have liked to see more mathematical discussion of some points, but that is not the point of the book so I can't fault it for not covering any.All in all a good read, but a bit dated at this point, thus the 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal Primer on Macroeconomics
This is a GREAT book to use to understand the macroeconomy.I read it in 2002 and although the book was written 10 years ago, it described what was happening in the economy perfectly. The 30 10-page essays are an ideal way to learn an important but dense topic: small, manageable bites.I highly recommend this book. After taking my time reading it, I am going to read it again after 6 months. It is worth the price and the time to read it. ... Macroeconomics for Developing Countries presents a valuable analysis of the current debate in development economics and provides the intermediate macroeconomic theory necessary to understand it. The book falls into four parts. The first two present received macroeconomic theory in its closed and open economy versions. Supported by a wide range of illustrations and examples from developing countries, the final two sections are devoted entirely to the macroeconomic problems of these countries. In light of recent develpoments in the macroeconomic field, such as the GATT agreement, this book is both timely and relevant. ... Read more
