3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe too thorough for AP Macro exam
This review ONLY pertains to AP Macroeconomics: Compared to The Princeton Review's study guide from AP econimcs courses, Kaplan's is much longer, possibly too long. Each section is followed by review questions that, while not reflecting AP type questions, test your knowledge of the chapter. While doing these review questions, I noticed that they were far more detailed that what the AP test covers--very general macroeconomic concepts. With too many AP tests to prepare for, I dropped the Kaplan review after 2 or 3 chapters and picked up The Princeton Review's more concise study guide. TPR (The Princeton Review) offers a very good review with great practice exams (I didn't try Kaplan's exams). While taking the AP exam, I felt well prepared and very comfortable with the general concepts, as I did not encounter any detailed questions about economics concepts. As for the accuracy of my recollection, I'm writing this review three days after taking the Macro exam. In general, TPR is more concise than Kaplan, which is not to say one is better than the other, but time can become in issue during May testing. Also, FYI, I believe the Kaplan reviews from 'Apex Learning' are some kind of new edition(s); several AP teachers at my school recieved free copies for marketing/feedback purposes. In order to provide a helpful review, I'll try and remove any ambiguity by stating that I recommend TPR's AP Micro/Macroeconomics (5 stars) over Kaplan's.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the Best
I bought this book to review for the AP Micro-Macro exams with little consideration of other options. I'd advise you to do otherwise, namely, to buy another book.

To me, the review of concepts in this book seemed minmal. Although the book's cover says it includes 2 sample tests, it really only includes 1 -- 1 micro and 1 macro.

It's not that Apex Learning's book is terrible, because it's not -- I just think that, after reading some of the reviews of the Princeton Review Economics book, I regretted buying this one. ... Read more

Product Description

This book demonstrates that classical micro- and macroeconomics, in particular in the tradition of Smith, Ricardo and Marx, can be synthesized into a coherent whole from the perspective of formal model building as well as applied Leontief-Stone systems of national accounts and the input-output approaches built on them. This reformulation of classical economics differs significantly from the static Neoricardian formalization of the classical approach to economics. The book presents a collection of revised versions of papers that were written between 1983 and 2000, some jointly with coauthors, and supplements them in a coherent way with recent unpublished work on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rhonda's Review
I am in the process of complete my course in Macroeconomics.Like the other person who stated they had taken Economics before without much luck, well I took it 30 yrs. ago and I was totally lost and the instructor was way over my head.I can't remember much about my textbook at that time. This book is very easy to understand and finally Economics makes sense to me.I don't see anything political at all about this book. What I do like is that it is more modern and discusses things that pertain to today's world and what's happening NOW.I now have a much better understanding of Economics after my present class (which ends soon) and reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Introduction to Economics
The first time I tried to take economics, I gave up.The teacher was no good, and the textbook we were using didn't help.So I put the course off for two years until I couldn't wait any longer.

But things have changed, thank God!The second time around I had a much better teacher, but more than that, we used this textbook instead, and I swear it helped me do well in the class. It is SO clearly written, with great examples and great stories.I admit I was intimidated by economics at first, but this book has a way of explaining the concepts that makes you think, "Hey, I actually get this."The authors give you credit for being an intelligent person, and they provide really clear analysis while walking you through the tougher parts step by step.

As for the review here that talks about the authors' political agenda, I have to come to the authors' defense.I consider myself very middle of the road politically, and believe me, there is nothing objectionable here. The authors are very careful to present both sides of various debates, and those debates are always framed as two sides of a story - and they don't take either side, they just report the controversy and let the reader decide for himself.

After reading this book and taking this course, I feel that I understand the newspaper and TV news much better. So, thanks Robert Hall and Marc Lieberman, I got an A in principles of econ when I thought the best I could hope for was a D.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice pictures, bad book
I was required to use this book for a college macro course.I found this to be one of the worst business textbooks I've seen so far.I think it fails its job at giving the average college student a good understanding of the macro economy.

When explaining simple concepts that should be easy to grasp, the book loads the reader down with obscure mathematical equations and other gobblygook. On rather complicated topics where additional details would help, they try to condense the topics making it difficult to see the big picture. To figure out what I was supposed to learn, I had to use other sources to help me out (i.e. websites and other business books).I also think the authors are poor at making comprehensible analogies.

Perhaps the most annoying aspect was the author's injected liberal opinion. In a few chapters, they innuendo their griefs about how businesses are unfair to poor people and that successful individuals should have their winnings reallocated to the less privileged. They also gripe about how not everyone can find a job in a capitalist society. It seems that the authors have little understanding of concepts like competition and motivation to be successful.

If you are a course coordinator considering this book for a macroeconomics class, please do your students a favor and seek a different book.As a student, it is more helpful to have a book free of opinions.A book that uses clear explanations rather than confusing lines and charts. If the websites and other sources I used can clearly state the material, so can a textbook!

5-0 out of 5 stars don't switch over to this excellent textbook
How can I give this book 5 stars and at the same time tell you not to use it?Read on:

This is a college freshman-level macro survey book that uses only elementary algebra and geometry. It's got a slightly conservative bent, deemphasizing, for example, the income inequality implications of certain monetary or fiscal measures.

But personally I love this book.I got a lot out of reading it.It helped to clarify some things I had been wondering about for years -- literally.

I had been teaching economics for a few years before settling down to read this. The publisher sent me an evaluation copy for free.

If you're teaching AP Economics, I can tell you that the College Board people hate this book and, on their website, specifically disrecommend it for an AP course.

Sure, it's missing some things you're going to have to supply if you're teaching AP Macroeconomics (e.g., it's got no Keynesian cross), but the reason I liked it so much was precisely why they hated it.

You know how economics books (and heck, even algebra books these days; it's a plague) try to get you "into" the subject while skirting around the unpleasant math or disembodied formulae?Well, this book doesn't do that.It gives it to you "dry," so to speak, leaving you to get interested in the subject somehow else.

This was a big boon for me, since after years of teaching econ, I didn't need yet another book that asked me "What do you suppose YOUR MPC is?" and instead just gave me the cold, dry math for solving econ problems.

That is why this book was for me, stuffy as it can be, kind of a breath of fresh air.

Anyhow, the reason I say don't switch to this book is simple:There won't be an eighth edition.

This is coming personally from an email communication from the author (in May 2008). In response to my inquiry about a new edition, Dr. Ruffin wrote that the two of them are retired now and the book (the 7th edition went to press in 2001) will not be updated again, at least not by them.

So if you switch to this edition, you're going to be looking silly in a few years when everybody else has got an updated edition.

But if you're a little wobbly about teaching macro and have been craving a "just the facts, ma'am" approach, this volume will be a welcome addition to your reference shelf.

Dr. Ruffin and Dr. Gregory:thank you. ... Read more

Product Description
Whether as politician, journalist, or concerned citizen, those who make judgments about how government policies are likely to affect the performance of the economy need to understand how the economy works. Otherwise, they are left with half-remembered college courses and a collection of slogans, myths, and rules-of-thumb that are often wrong. In this new book, Charles Schultze employs an unusual format for explaining to busy policymakers and interested citizens how the US economy works. He imagines that an incoming President has decided to set aside time each week to learn about the economy and has asked his Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors to provide him with a series of memos devoted to that purpose. In these memos, Schultze seeks to explain the key economic relationships as a background for making macroeconomic policy judgments-relationships among domestic and foreign economic forces, and government policies and economic outcomes. The memos rely heavily on the use of real-world examples from recent economic events and policy debates. They focus principally on such policy-related issues as inflation, unemployment, long-term economic growth, and the flow of international trade and capital. The memos are divided into three sections: the first set lays the background, explaining why it is particularly important for policymakers to distinguish between those economic forces which affect total demand in the economy and those which affect total supply; the second addresses the problem of economic stability; and the third looks at long-term economic growth. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Economic Superstitions 101
All you need to know about this book is that it's written by a useful idiot helping out the government who makes completely false claims such as that:

1.) The Federal Reserve protects the dollar, never mind that the dollar has lost over 90% of its value since the Federal Reserve was created.

2.) The government should work to guarantee full employment, never mind that government policies and regulations are what cauase massive unemployment to begin with and government jobs themselves are usually less useful to the rest of society, such as paper shuffling.

3.) The government should manage international trade, never mind that massive problems that have come about because of institutions such as the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and the Orwellian titled North and Central American Free Trade Agreements.Never mind that regulation of international trade usually exploits consumers for politically-connected domestic interests.

4.) The government should protects us from pollution of our environment when it's places where government is biggest such as in D.C. where it's usually dirtiest.

5.) The government can create in increased standard of living for all, yet Americans' standard of living has decreased for nearly thirty years due to the growth of government and its having its hands in almost every area of the economy.

6.) There is such a thing as overall demand in the economy when there really isn't amongst consumers.

7.) Investments and capital are the same thing.Actually they're very diverse.

8.) Perhaps the biggest superstition is the attempt to separate micro from macro in economic affairs and claim that the decisions of individuals don't affect the overall picture. This is false because the decisions of numerous individuals is what makes up the overall picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars A pretty good intro to macro issues
I thought that in general the book was pretty good.I liked the essay format as they were good sized chunks that explored a single topic well.It is a very easy read, especially at a chapter or two a day.I would have liked to see more mathematical discussion of some points, but that is not the point of the book so I can't fault it for not covering any.All in all a good read, but a bit dated at this point, thus the 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal Primer on Macroeconomics
This is a GREAT book to use to understand the macroeconomy.I read it in 2002 and although the book was written 10 years ago, it described what was happening in the economy perfectly. The 30 10-page essays are an ideal way to learn an important but dense topic: small, manageable bites.I highly recommend this book. After taking my time reading it, I am going to read it again after 6 months. It is worth the price and the time to read it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Prof's choice
I don't mean to be repetive, but our daughter just started her Freshman year in college, and we had to get to Econ books for her. Amazon just happened to have them...at a very good price I might add! ; ) So we ordered them through Amazon. I put something similar on the text which goes with the study guide. (What a good kid, and she's being very frugal - looking for a "better price" than the competition! LOL)

Our oldest just started college this fall (2009) Her Econ Prof. was so adamant about having this study guide, he had the kids send back perfectly good Econ texts for this one, along with the $92+ text with which it goes.(The texts they sent back were "perfectly good" I read through the others, and were sound, and a good tool for those new to Econ.) Yikes!

The costs of these books can be astounding, but a better price is almost always found on Amazon, right! This book was a fraction of the original price. With college costing as much as it does we we're all for her purchasing slightly used books - as long as the study manuals have no writing in them!

Our daughter must've gotten a different edition than the previous reviewer; as of yet there have been no problems, and no complaints from the other classes. These are the two the Prof insists upon. His insistance, combined with my own brief once-over, as well as our daughters' is what I based my rating upon. I'm sure you'd like more info, and I'm sorry not to be able to provide it, but I didn't have the text long enough before she left for school to give a really good going over.

2-0 out of 5 stars Errors abound
The study guide was kind of useful, but it often asked pointless questions about details with which we were completely unconcerned in my Intro Microeconomics class. Also, it often gave the wrong answers for multiple choice questions, resulting in such inaccurate assertions as "The statement that firms in competitive markets are price takers means that average cost equals marginal cost at the minimum of average cost." It contradicted the book as well, defining the long run average cost curve as the straight line running along the bottom of the short-run curves when in actuality such a curve is the minimum average cost curve, and it bizarrely defined the real product wage as the marginal product divided by the product price. This last error wasn't exactly a typo, because it appeared twice. I can only imagine how many microeconomics students this study guide has misled and confused. ... Read more

Product Description
Macroecomics Textbook version. Softcover paperback version. 600 pages. Published by Worth Publishers. Authored by Paul Krugman and Robin Wells. College and University Textbook. Microeconomics is the study of the economic behavior of people as individuals and in organizations such as corporations. Macroeconomics is the study of economic behavior of human beings as nations and the economic interactions between nations. It involves aspects of the economy such as money, savings, growth, stocks and flows, inflation, unemployment, taxation, national budgets and so forth. The study does not prefer one type of government policy over another, but studies the tradeoffs of the effects of different economic choices. Those of us who prefer specific outcomes will prefer certain choices over others, but that is not a part of the broader topic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars No detailed examples or answers.

This workbook supplements the Varian textbook, Intermediate Microeconomics. The textbook focuses on the conceptual and this workbook focuses on the mathematical applications of microeconomics. There are numerous problems for each chapter that range from easy to difficult.Unfortunately, the workbook only has the even answers in the back and no explanations for the answers.I believe that the workbook would be extremely valuable if only it had explanations for the answers.Instructors using the workbook do have the detailed explanations to the questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad
no example, questions are either too easy or too confusing
don't use it

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you think
This is an excellent workbook to accompany Varian's Intermediate Microeconomics. The reviewers who claim that there are numerous mistakes have clearly done many of the problems incorrectly. In the 5 years that I have used this book, I have found a very small number of mistakes, mostly typographical. Yes, it's a book that has tricky questions. It requires a deep understanding of economic problems, but the point of each example is to illustrate one aspect of the economic concept. If you can get through these problems, you will have a very good understanding of the logic of microeconomics.

1-0 out of 5 stars mistakes and very simple
I completely agree with what everyone else has said especially, "waste of time, I don'tknow what else to say."It was extremely simple and did have many errors. If you want to check your math microeconomics understanding, buy a copy of Shaum's outlines for Mathematics for Economists.

1-0 out of 5 stars those godawful examples
i agree with all the other people when I say this is one of the worst review books I've ever read. The author uses awkward examples to explain concepts...and what is wrong with those names? shirley sixpack? Ambrose? Vanna Boogie? How about Author Dull? or Iam Perplexed? Even answers are given but it doesnt show how it was derived. And on top of that, I am positive the book contains number of errors. This makes it even more confusing for people trying to learn micro. Portions of the textbook are written at levels which are too low for college/university students, while other portions expect students to go beyond the scope of the material covered in the text. For example, in the chapter on demand and supply, surpluses and shortages are never referred to as such.Instead, they are only referred to as 'excess supply' and 'excess demand'.Too simplistic of a definition is also used for opportunity cost.

At the same time, additional problems inserted near the end of each chapter (not the chapter problems themselves), require students to apply the theory in a way that isn't taught in the textbook.Any student who has been required to complete these questions, on the basis of the textbook alone, may have experienced a lot of frustration from attempting these problems.

In addition, the textbook presents a detailed theory of taxicab licensing, yet doesn't completely explain all of the needed theory (short-run and long-run) for the market structures (pure competition, monopoly, etc.)The explanation of taxicab licensing is poor, for this level of student.

For any professor considering adopting this textbook, the testbank offers some very good questions. However, apparently some of the questions have been changed, perhaps from an earlier edition, but the answers haven't been.Overall, there were more errors in this testbank than in others I've used.

To anyone required to purchase this textbook for a course, I would recommend purchasing or borrowing other textbooks to supplement this text.If someone wants to learn Microeconomic theory on their own, there are better books available. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading text
This book is not about development microeconomics. It is more an ad hoc collection of papers on various topics relating to household economics. Hence, the book is poorly structured. In terms of content, the math is heavy (not for undergrads) but yields little insight. As Toye puts it long ago, much of new instituional economics is empty, or just common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice and short compendium
This is a fine and succint compendium of some of the most important results in modern Development MicroEconomics. The book is well written, and it can be a very useful guide for advanced undergraduate students, or graduate students who are looking for a short and good guide to some of the most important recent (and less recent) contributions to this literature. This books is a good complement to Deaton's "The Analysis of Household Survey", which truly is the bible of development microeconoics. While Deaton's textbook also surveys a huge amount of empirical results (covering also wonderfully well most of the necessary econometrics), Bardhan and Udry mostly discuss the theory, and the underlying models. Among the covered topics are: Intrahousehold allocation of resources, labor markets, migration, rural land markets, risk and insurance, credit markets, income distribution, technology diffusion (and many others). Chapters are pretty much self-contained, and about 20 pages long. This book really is an excellent starting point if you are looking for a graduate-level introduction to one of the literatures covered here. Most of the math is not forbidding, but advanced calculus, statistics & probability, integrals and derivatives and some dynamic programming will be necessary to understand the book. Highly recommended, I am just sorry I only discovered this book after I left grad school....

5-0 out of 5 stars a very useful distillation of research
This book synthesizes recent research in development microeconomics which extends the field beyond Walrasian general equilibrium paradigm to incorporate such features as informational asymmetries, network externalities, and various types of coordination failures.Topics covered in this volume include such things as household economics, rural credit markets, and the adoption of new techniques. The emphasis is on "applied theory" -- empirical evidence on the theoretical models is mentioned, but not discussed in depth. The arguemnts are presented verbally, graphically, and mathematically. The writing is quite clear. Numerous references are cited in the text and given at the end of each chapter. This small book would be very useful to graduate students and academics.Undergraduate students will probably find the math a little heavy. ... Read more

Product Description
Lance Taylor is widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent development economists in the world and is known for his work on development planning, macroeconomics of development, stabilization policy, and the global economy. He has also been the major force behind structuralist economics, which is seen by many to be a major alternative to orthodox development economics and policy prescriptions. The essays in this volume, written by well-known scholars in their own right, make contributions to each of these areas while honoring the contributions made by Taylor.

Professional economists, researchers and policy makers interested in development economics, political economy, global political economy and viable alternatives to mainstream thought will find this collection a valuable addition to their libraries. ... Read more

Product Description
Axel Leijonhufvud has made a unique contribution to the development of macroeconomic theory. This volume draws together his insightful essays dealing with the extremes of economic instability: great depressions, high inflation and the transition from socialism to a market economy. In several of the papers, Leijonhufvud brings a neo-institutionalist perspective to the problems of coordination in economic systems.

The papers within Macroeconomic Instability and Coordination, some of them already considered classics, deal with the questions that dominated Leijonhufvud's interest throughout his career as an economist: what are the limits to an economy's capacity to coordinate the activities of its members? How does the behavior of the system change under extreme conditions? In what ways does its performance depend upon the institutions that govern the market process?

This book presents in one volume several of Axel Leijonhufvud's most important contributions to macroeconomic theory and monetary economics. It will be invaluable to monetary and financial economists as well as to historians of economic thought. ... Read more
