Book Description
This is the story of the world and magic shows of Harry Blackstone (1885-1965), who entertained theatre-goers for over 50 seasons. Gifted with an electric presence, a magnificent voice and a master magician's mentality and skills, he played everything from showboats to vaudeville to television. Blackstone's extravagant productions advertised "1001 wonders" and "an enchanting array of beautiful girls." Waldron's vivid and thoroughly researched narrative, enhanced with first-hand accounts by those who worked on the Blackstone show, presents an unforgettable portrait of a unique showman. Illustrated throughout with photographs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Best magician biography in a long while
Unlike many magical biographies, this one has texture. That's probably because much of its content is derived from actual interviews with a great many members of Blackstone's travelling troupe, key among them beingBlackstone's brother Pete and first wife Inez. For this reason, theperspective of Blackstone rendered here isn't from the vantage point of anaudience member who watched him in the theatre, but rather a view fromthose who accompanied him on the road -- and that's refreshing.Vaudevillecomes suprisingly alive with small details here, and Waldron does anunusually fine job of historical contextualization.Probably the bestmagical biography since Bamberg's Illusion Show. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly put together book
This is not actually a book per se but a collection of poorly written articles. It displays a few of the standard decks, but gives no strategy about deck building. It also does not explain or elaborate on the basic mechanics of the game. So if it is aimed at introducing the game, it fails. For the experienced player it is nothing new or interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great to get you into Magic: The Gathering
One of the best books I've seen on Magic written for the casual and just starting out player.Gives some great hints and tips on what to look for in a deck, and how to plan and build winning decks and strategies. Goes over main concepts and the ideas behind each color, the best cards to look for and how to build to beat your opponents. Also gives insight into tournaments of all types and what's required. I really liked it and would recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good for beginners
If you are truly a beginner, then this book is pretty good.

It does a decent job of explaining all the different formats (Type 1, Extended, Type II, Sealed Deck, Booster Drafting ... etc.).If you have no clue what that stuff is, then you should pick this book up.

There's a nice walk-thru of a complete game with preconstructed decks which was pretty cool. And there is also a nice introduction to Magic The Gathering Online, which can be intimidating to newbies as well.

Overall, I give it 5 stars for newbies. If you ain't a newbie, then this book isn't targetted for you, but it still can be fun to read on the can.;-)

3-0 out of 5 stars Bare Bones Beckoning Beginners
For starters, anyone with any experience might as well avoid this book; there's nothing here for you.

This is a decent book for beginners. It covers the basics well.It mentions a few deck types and frequently seen cards, so that beginners start off with some knowledge. It is also a nice feature to have a short article for parents whose kid have just discovered Magic.

However, this book does have problems.First, it is written in an April 2003 mindset, but it has not seen wide release until August 2003.Much has changed.Beginners should be immersing themselves with 8th Edition, not retrograding themselves back to 7th.Also, it chooses some strange things to cover. For example, beginners don't need much coverage of Type I or Rochester, and they should not even be told about Solomon drafts. Why the heck mention Solomon drafts? In nine years of playing Magic I have only seen one done, and it was unsanctioned and over six years ago.The space dedicated to these topics would have been better served preparing beginners for local tourneys and for trading, giving them advice about how to tell a good trade from a bad trade. This book does a fine job of illustrating why Magic advice has been concentrated on the internet, and not in an hard form like magazines or books.

Those just starting will do OK with this book ... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The best way to beat the game.
If you are stuck halfway through the game or at the beginning, this guide gives you just enough info to have fun.You still get to figure out how certain things work, but this guide can give you a great head start. It doesn't give too much away (unless you read ahead) but it gives you ways toget things (spells, weapons, training) you might never have gotten before. The equipment descriptions can save you from having to pay to get themidentified. Also, the "Minor Quests" section isn't teallydetailed, but the book would weigh 50 lbs. if it did!Everything you couldever need for Major Quests is here and you get an additional edge on yourenemies. At $15.99, this book is a great addition to your game.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not sure why everyone seems so down on it...
I found it rather useful.Mostly I referred to the maps, and in several cases, was able to locate a section of dungeon I'd missed behind secret doors or stuff like that...The minor quest section could've stood alittle more detail, and as mentioned the item and NPC sections were totallyinane, but other than that I had little to complain about. As for plotspoilers -- if you don't resort to the book until you're truly stumped, youshouldn't be getting plot spoilers, because it's a pretty linear game, so aclue for a section of the game you're in doesn't mention stuff fromsomewhere in the future. At least that was my experience, FWIW, YMMV.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So
This is a so-so strategy guide. I'll take it chapter by chapter: Chapter 1: A good description of the history of Might and Magic, but you can't really go wrong with that. Chapter 2: A great instruction on how to build agood party. Chapter 3: An excellent and accurate description of everymonster in the game, save for a few bosses (they're more fun to figure out, anyways) Chapter 4: A good description of all spells in the game, with somescreenshot graphics thrown in. Chapter 5: Not too useful. This item guideshows you the exact same thing as you can see on the screen. Chapter 6: Youcan't really complain about this chapter, it tells you all about the skillswell. Chapter 7: A pretty pointless chapter, you can find out all theinformation by talking to npc's. Chapter 8: Informative information aboutall types of locations in the game. Unfortunately, it does not tell youabout where on the grid each location is, only what grid it is on. Chapter9: A good description of the main part of the game. It spoils very little.Unfortunately, it does not tell you about where you will get ambushed alongthe way. Chapter 10: It shows you about all that is possible about thepromotion quests, and the seer. Chapter 11: Not quite detailed enough. However, it provides adequate information about the minor quests that willbe your lifeblood until you get fairly far. Appendix: The territorial mapsare fairly good. However, they don't tell you where shops are, nor do theysay where important houses are (it can be very frustrating spending hourslooking for the bone-buyer in Free Haven) Overall, this book had guided meto where I am now, midway through the control center, without making it tooeasy for me or spoiling it, but still helping me and preventing me fromgetting stuck. Thanks for reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars NOTASTRATEGY GUIDE
This guide offers some help but dost tell you where to go or what to do, some quests that you get are too tough for your party to handle. The monsters that you run into are way too many for your party to take on inreal time combat for example it does not tell you about ambushes when youopen chests like the ones in the Temple of Baa.The guide does offer somehelp in spells, weapons, armour, skills and monsters but that about it,it doesnot tell you what party to take. If you want a book with maps and some helpbuy it, but it will not walk you through the game, you will have to run andshoot alot in the dungeons. This book does guide you through quests but itdoes not tell you about what monsters are there waiting for your party. Ibought it for the maps and locations of dungeons, fountains, towns and itemsin the dungeons. It tells you where to go in the dungeons to get what youwhant. This book is addictive so get ready to use it alot happy adventuring.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to describe the storyline...
The Turtles are at April's apartment and Donatello is playing with some gadgets (as you'd probably expect), when Raphael complains that there's no hot water in the shower. So Don is asked to go & fix the hot waterheater, but he has to watch out for this guy named Kirby, who is rentingthe office in the basement. Don eventually meets Kirby, who is drawingalien-looking characters that come to life because of a little magiccrystal that he tied to the pencil for decoration. He drew a portal &he & Don enter it & step into the world where all the drawn aliencharacters live. There, Kirby & Don fight the evil aliens, & savethe good guys. When they get back to the portal, it's shrinking & onlyDon fits through. He returns to April's apartment where Raph is mad at himsince there's still no hot water.

Basically, it's a fantasy adventurewith a plot that's hard to describe & doesn't really get anywhere inthe end, but it's a cute Don story. A word of warning for parents withyoung children--it shows Raph in a towel, but his shell is still there& nothing's exposed; but kids will probably not stop talking &giggling about it. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Geared more toward young adult fans
This book was ok. I felt it was really written for young fans who might want to follow his footsteps. There is a bit of history here, as if to show Blaine is respectful of the past masters and not cocky. Not completely dull, I remember he does give a least one simple trick as a bone, but not extremly compelling - perhaps that is part of the point, the craft is not all glamour and is laden with repetitive training & hard work. Try to get it at the public library unless you are a fanatic about this guy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic audio rendition of the series
My only complaint about the series is that it's abridged, which it clearly states. The characters were so well done that I just wanted more with them. Sometimes it was hard to keep the characters separate (without the usual, "peter said, etc" but it was still great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
The content and the performance of these stories are great! Our girls (3 and 5) both enjoy them and my wife and I enjoy them too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Great Work - For the Whole Family
I have listened to this production now at least 3 times. It's a joy each time, and seems to get better every time I listen to it. The cast and effects are spot-on, and I think the intended metaphors and meanings become very clear. Everyone in the family can enjoy this - not just children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enchanting way to pass hours on the road
My daughters, ages six and eight, love these well produced radio dramas based on the C.S. Lewis classics. And I must say, my wife and I enjoy them as much or more than the kids.

We've found the series especially enjoyable on long road trips. Being audio-only, it keeps the children entertained, while allowing them to enjoy sights of our cross-country trips.

Now when we take long car trips, it has almost become tradition that we also journey through the enchanted land of Narnia using this great series.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
Outstanding production, great cast, great music. One of the best audio drama's I have heard, and it was a hoot to see the grandkids sitting around the cd player(taking the place of an Atwater-Kent)getting lost in this fantasy world.Kids dont "need" to watch TV, just give them a great alternative! Highly recommended!! ... Read more
