5-0 out of 5 stars The Game: Entertainment & Media
Well organized book focused of the key sectors of Entertainment and Media. Provides great insight into the areas of film, broadcast, cable, music and sports. With inside information about the companies and players, this is a great read. Highly recommended for the casual entertainment and media observer to the corporate lifers in this business.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Does NOT Suck
I received this book along with two others (one of which is titled "Smart Globalization" and I posted a review of that book on Amazon as well). Most of the reviewers share the same perspective on this book as me, so I'll keep this review short.Take a look at my rating. This book is entertaining and not boring. There you go.Buy it.It's worth your money.Trust me, I'd tell you if a book sucked or not.

3-0 out of 5 stars Written in 2002 -- much still holds up in 2006 E360
Hi, full disclosure here -- I've also written about this space in several books and reports including the National Assn of Broadcasters MULTIMEDIA 2000 -- HOLLYWOODUSA section I wrote in 1994 and scores of articles for Film & Video Magazine, BUSINESS 2.0 and ad/entertainment trade pubs including HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, digitrends.net and imediaconnection.com where I still write about emerging entertainment platforms. But onto this book. Also I don't thing I've met either of the authors Al or Patricia FYI. Al's a professor of NYU and Patricia is the exec editor of Entertanment Managament magazine which I've never seen -- I'm sure it's good. (Couldn't find a link online) Anyway -- 12 chapters covering such topics as 1) Marketing basics 2) People & players 3) Movies 4) Network TV/Syndicatio/Radio 5) Cable and Satellite & PPV 6) Publishing 7) Music 8)Sports 9) Travel & tourism 10) LBE & experiential branding. I'm writing this the week that NBC decides to advertise on Youtube.com for it's fall shows. And I look in this index and only see about 5 pages for Internet. So take that with a grain of salt...I do LOVE that they include Sports, Travel & Tourism and one of my favorites LBE (location based entertainment & what they call experiential branding). They define the 4C's of Entertainment Marketing as 1) content 2) conduit 3) consumption and 4 convergence....In the new economy many of us believe that the 4C's that matter are a) connectivity, b) community c) commerce and d) content. As one of my pals says -- if you don't put butts in the seats it doesn't matter how cool the convergence is :)) COMMERCE COMMERCE -- making money while you sleep -- either advertising or sponsorship are crucial in the new arena of entertainment marketing. This book gives a great profile of Barry Diller who I believe is one of the old economy gurus who really GOT and GETS the new economy. Eisner and Ovitz are also mentioned-- neither are players anymore and I doubt whether many people want to follow Ovitz path...Disappointed to only see 2 pages on Sponsorship when it is SOOO big -- think NASCAR -- think PIXAR's CARS -- zillions of sponsors Only two pages on merchandising -- which I have to really disagree with -- since Jurassic Park -- most of the major films have made more money with merchandise-- T shirts/licensing etc than with their content! THE INDEX IS GREAT -- the book belongs on your shelf even if it's a bit dated-- good way to see how the world changed between 2002 and 2006 -- 4 years WOW -- now ESPN is on 12 platforms -- ranging from mobile to Internet to Broadband to Satelillite, PPV etc. And of course the rise of social networking -- Myspace.com and Youtube.com are changing how marketing is done daily. Xspace is what many people here in Hollywood call Myspace's promo of X-Men --really awesome promo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great breadth of coverage
This is a great compendium providing both breadth - film, cable TV, publishing, music, etc. are covered - with perspective since the narration works in recent and long-past history. In the movie section that was of particular interest to me, there was theory and also practical information such as some films aren't shown to press reviewers in advance, which is a sure sign the studio has little confidence in the appeal of these films. Etc. By the way, I'm author of "Marketing to Moviegoers" from Focal Press that covers once slice of "Marketing Revolution's" broad turf.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
The eBook format is a HUGE disappointment. You cannot print anything or extract anything. What a waste. Now I have to buy the hardback, too. . .

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS eBook FORMAT!!!!It is like throwing good money after bad. ... Read more

Product Description
This is the story of the world and magic shows of Harry Blackstone (1885-1965), who entertained theatre-goers for over 50 seasons. Gifted with an electric presence, a magnificent voice and a master magician's mentality and skills, he played everything from showboats to vaudeville to television. Blackstone's extravagant productions advertised "1001 wonders" and "an enchanting array of beautiful girls." Waldron's vivid and thoroughly researched narrative, enhanced with first-hand accounts by those who worked on the Blackstone show, presents an unforgettable portrait of a unique showman. Illustrated throughout with photographs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable biography
I am a magic collector with a shelf full of conjuring biographies. This one ranks as one of my favorites, because it is so engaging, fast-paced, and well-written.Reading it is a real treat.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intimate experience of touring magic ...
I spent 15 years (1965 - 1980) as stage manager with a touring stage illusion magic company. The show was modeled after the Blackstone show, closed years ago and the illusions sold to MGM.

The stories told in this well written volume brought back a flood of memories. I found the story of Harry Blackstone fascinating and familiar and since it is told from the point of view of company personnel it really spoke to me.

You won't learn secrets of the Blackstone illusions from this book. It is more of an indirect character study of Blackstone himself, through the eyes of his staff, and a very accurate description of the touring experience. This type of life did not completely disappear with the demise of vaudeville, but touring companies are very rare because they are no longer profitable. Big illusion shows are pretty well confined to Las Vegas in the US.

If you are a magic buff, or interested in the vaudeville era, I should think you would find this book a great addition to your collection. Harry Blackstone is a very interesting character and this is revealed by his actions through the reminiscences of fellow travelers rather than through analysis. Every magician dreams of performing as Blackstone finally did at the height of his career. If you have ever worked for a touring magic show, and I know we are a small audience, you won't be able to put it down.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best magician biography in a long while
Unlike many magical biographies, this one has texture. That's probably because much of its content is derived from actual interviews with a great many members of Blackstone's travelling troupe, key among them beingBlackstone's brother Pete and first wife Inez. For this reason, theperspective of Blackstone rendered here isn't from the vantage point of anaudience member who watched him in the theatre, but rather a view fromthose who accompanied him on the road -- and that's refreshing.Vaudevillecomes suprisingly alive with small details here, and Waldron does anunusually fine job of historical contextualization.Probably the bestmagical biography since Bamberg's Illusion Show. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's hard to describe the storyline...
The Turtles are at April's apartment and Donatello is playing with some gadgets (as you'd probably expect), when Raphael complains that there's no hot water in the shower. So Don is asked to go & fix the hot waterheater, but he has to watch out for this guy named Kirby, who is rentingthe office in the basement. Don eventually meets Kirby, who is drawingalien-looking characters that come to life because of a little magiccrystal that he tied to the pencil for decoration. He drew a portal &he & Don enter it & step into the world where all the drawn aliencharacters live. There, Kirby & Don fight the evil aliens, & savethe good guys. When they get back to the portal, it's shrinking & onlyDon fits through. He returns to April's apartment where Raph is mad at himsince there's still no hot water.

Basically, it's a fantasy adventurewith a plot that's hard to describe & doesn't really get anywhere inthe end, but it's a cute Don story. A word of warning for parents withyoung children--it shows Raph in a towel, but his shell is still there& nothing's exposed; but kids will probably not stop talking &giggling about it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic- photos, text, interest level
I loved the book. Great photos, history, biography, magic tricks, social commentary, motivational messages, thrill-seeking and dangerous action... FANTASTIC writing, a quick read- because I couldn't put the book down. There was a background overview of magic in general and autobiographically interesting topics. Buy it for the photos, buy it if you are a magic- loving hobbyist, buy it if you're an entertainer or if you work with or enjoy being around people. Buy it if you can't stand people and want to understand people who enjoy being around other people. Buy it if you are interested in history, geography, world studies... Buy it if you get a thrill from reading about someone else's failures and insecurities. It's an honest and entertaining book, written by a strong thinker and expert communicator.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is amazing
This book is a mind-blower.Open it anywhere and start reading (which is how I read a lot, I'm pretty ADD) and you'll have a hard time putting it down. Each time I open the book, I end up sitting there with my jaw dropping open, and saying "Holy @#$%&*! Listen to this!", a lot.Blaine talks about magic in history, about the most astounding magicians and their lives, about the dedication it takes to do this.He talks about his own life, and his travels and some really bizarre stuff he's seen and done. After seeing footage of him on the street, I had come to the conclusion that he was from another planet.Evidently he's not really magic or non-human.One thing I'm getting out of this book is what an extraordinary amount of dedication and passion magicians have, and just how many thousands of hours it takes them to get this good. This book is really fascinating.Plus, who knew the guy could write so well, too?

3-0 out of 5 stars Geared more toward young adult fans
This book was ok. I felt it was really written for young fans who might want to follow his footsteps. There is a bit of history here, as if to show Blaine is respectful of the past masters and not cocky. Not completely dull, I remember he does give a least one simple trick as a bone, but not extremly compelling - perhaps that is part of the point, the craft is not all glamour and is laden with repetitive training & hard work. Try to get it at the public library unless you are a fanatic about this guy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, this guy is awsome

4-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Reference for the Magic:the Gathering CD-ROM
This book is a well written explanation of Magic and how the game's mechanics work. Its appendices of opponents' decks and trade value of cards is very useful. There is less on game specific strategy than I would have liked. The book avoids mentioning any loopholes or strategies that are particularly effective because of the limitations of the program's AI. That's why I call it a reference tool rather than an excellent all around text.

There is important information that is not contained in the book. For example, several program revisions have been released since the book was published. For a list of current bugs, glitches, hints, as well as things you only think are bugs in the game, please check out the bug lists at http://www.xs4all.nl/~bpm/mtgbugs.htm ... Read more
