Product Description
The aim of this book is to review recent achievements in thetheoretical investigations of the electronic structure, optical,magneto-optical (MO), and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD)properties of compounds and Multilayered structures. Chapter 1 of this book is of an introductory character and presentsthe theoretical foundations of the band theory of solids such as thedensity functional theory for ground state properties of solidsincluding local density approximation (LDA). It also presents somemodifications to the LDA, such as gradient correction,self-interaction correction, LDA+U method, orbital polarizationcorrection, GW approximation, and dynamical mean- field theory. Thedescription of the magneto-optical effects and linear response theoryis also presented. The book describes the MO properties for a number of 3d materials, such as elemental ferromagnetic metals (Fe, Co and Ni) andparamagnetic metals in external magnetic fields (Pd and Pt), someimportant 3d compounds such as XPt3 (X=V, Cr, Mn, Fe and Co), Heusleralloys, chromium spinel chalcogenides, MnB and strongly correlatedmagnetite Fe304. It also describes the recent achievements in both theexperimental and theoretical investigations of the electronicstructure, optical and MO properties of transition metal multilayeredstructures (MLS). The book presents also the MO properties of f band ferromagneticmaterials: Tm, Nd, Sm, Ce and La monochalcogenides, some important Ybcompounds, SmB6 and Nd3S4, UFe2, U3X4 (X=P, As, Sb, Bi, Se and Te),UCu2P2, UCuP2, UCuAs2, UAsSe, URhA1, UGa2 and UPd3. Within the totalgroup of alloys and compounds, we discuss their MO spectra inrelationship to: the spin-orbit coupling strength, the magnitude ofthe local magnetic moment, the degree of hybridization in the bonding, the half-metallic character, or, equivalently, the Fermi level fillingof the bandstructure, the intraband plasma frequency, and theinfluence of the crystal structure. In the last chapter results of recent theoretical investigations onthe MXCD in various representative transition metal 4f and 5f systemsare presented. ... Read more

Product Description
The fundamental physics of metallic magnetism is not yetsatisfactorily understood and continues to be interesting. Forinstance, magnetism is anticipated to play a principal role inproducing high Tc superconductivity of oxides. This book has two major objectives. First, it intends to provide anintroduction to magnetism of metals in a broad sense. Besides pursuingthe mechanism of metallic magnetism itself, it attempts to find andactively analyze magnetic causes hidden hitherto unnoticed behindvarious physical phenomena. The author's goal is to expose the fundamental role played by phononsin the mechanism of metallic magnetism. He demonstrates how such aview also helps to elucidate a broad spectrum of other observations. The second objective is to concisely introduce the standard many-bodypoints of view and techniques necessary in studying solid physics ingeneral. ... Product Description
Molecular Magnetism: From Molecular Assemblies to theDevices reviews the state of the art in the area. It is organizedin two parts, the first of which introduces the basic concepts, theories and physical techniques required for the investigation of themagnetic molecular materials, comparing them with those used in thestudy of classical magnetic materials. Here the reader will find: (i)a detailed discussion of the electronic processes involved in themagnetic interaction mechanisms of molecular systems, includingelectron delocalization and spin polarization effects; (ii) apresentation of the available theoretical models based on spin andHubbard Hamiltonians; and (iii) a description of the specific physicalinvestigative techniques used to characterize the materials. The second part presents the different classes of existing magneticmolecular materials, focusing on the possible synthetic strategiesdeveloped to date to assemble the molecular building blocks rangingfrom purely organic to inorganic materials, as well as on theirphysical properties and potential applications. These materialscomprise inorganic and organic ferro- and ferrimagnets, highnuclearity organic molecules and magnetic and metallic clusters, spincrossover systems, charge transfer salts (including fulleride saltsand organic conductors and superconductors), and organized soft media(magnetic liquid crystals and Langmuir--Blodgett films). ... Product Description
Molecular magnetism is a new field of research dealing with the synthesis and study of the physical properties of molecular assemblies involving open-shell units. It is essentially interdisciplinary, joining together organic, organometallic and inorganic chemists, as well as theoreticians, physicists and materials scientists.
At the core of research into molecular magnetism lie design and synthesis of new molecular assemblies exhibiting bulk properties such as long-range magnetic ordering or bistability with an hysteresis effect, which confers a memory effect on the system. In such terms, magnetism may be considered a supramolecular function.
The first eight contributions to this volume present the state of the art in organic supramolecular chemistry, emphasising interlocked systems and molecular trees. The following six articles are devoted to molecular materials constructed from organic radicals and transition metal units. Molecular bistability is then focused on, followed by metal-organic and coordination magnetic materials. A new approach to nano-sized particles closes the work. ... Read more

Product Description

The field of magnetism is rapidly advancing in this new millennium, revealing an ever-wider diversity of magnetic phenomena on more than one scale. With the emergence of countless applications particularly on a nanoscale, and their unpredictable implications mostly on a macroscale, it may seem that different aspects of magnetism are unrelated. Quite often, the overwhelming amount of topics discussed in the professional literature views only parts of a field, ignoring a broader context. Therefore, the present book aims at addressing the relationship between apparently unconnected topics in magnetism. Less obvious relationships are revealed among individual fields on various scales, making them better understandable.

Product Description
This book covers the properties and structure of a wide range of magnetic materials with engineering applications. It discusses ferromagnetic, ferrigmagnetic, and amorphous materials and their role in the two major property groupings of high permeability and permanent-magnet materials. Other groups, including materials suitable for magnetic recording, magnetoelastic transducers, magneto-optical discs and magnetic bubble memories, are also included. The book providesan in-depth discussion of the basic mechanisms which determine magnetic properties, and features a comprehensive view of how the mechanisms of magnetization reversal and coercivity are related to and interpreted in terms of the structure of the various materials at both the atomic and microstructural levels.
For ease of location of materials and topics, the chapters are structured with numbered headings. A large amount of information is presented in textual, tabular, and graphical form, and extensive references will direct the reader to the most important or most representative original papers or reviews. The book is aimed at research students in materials science and electrical engineering, and industrial researchers, for whom the concentration on useful materials will be of particular interest.

Covers a wide range of ferromagnetic materials, including many permanent magnets currently under development or research
Provides a clear interpretation of the observed properties of ferromagnetic materials or magnetic ceramics in terms of crystal and magnetic structure
Presents a detailed discussion and interpretation of magnetic properties of 3.2% Si-Fe transformer core alloy
