3-0 out of 5 stars quantitative
this is a very quantitative approach to operations management in a large scale business. Everything can be broken down into equations, even human labor. While the book had some interesting approaches to large scale business operations, I was looking for something more along the lines of a growing small business.I think it's worth a look if you are in charge of large scale manufacturing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much needed moisturizer for such a dry topic!!
This book uses real-life examples of how operational risk management and business process management go hand-in-hand.The authors' usage of historical incidents like the Exxon Valdez, Barings PLC, MCI WorldCom, and Societe Generale allows the layman reader to easily understand the complex concepts addressed in this book.Although geared for the senior executive (which I am most certainly not!), I found the book covered a lot of ground and made compelling arguments in favor of a full integration of ORM and BPM framework. The book poses a series of questions in the first chapter, which were succinctly summed up by coming full circle and answering these same questions in the final chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business book that makes sense!
At last -- a business book that makes sense

"No Excuses" is enjoyable to read with real-life case studies that get right to the point about situations in all types of work. In addition, the authors have invented a new risk management framework that actually makes sense. If only Wall Street had read this book prior to 2008.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best new business book of 2009
"No Excuses" is one of the best management books I have read in a long time. The book actually makes sense and is easy to read, which is not common when it comes to business and management books. I learned a great deal from the real-life case studies and the book's new risk management techniques. I now understand how operational risk affects us everywhere and how we can manage it at work and at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Appealing
This book provides a practical set of ways to control risk, which anyone can use. It uses a thoughtful, step-by-step approach along with very appealing and sometimes amusing case studies at the beginning of each chapter.

I have been working in non-profit organizations for many years and found the material to be very applicable and useful in this context.

4-0 out of 5 stars Managing Risk - common themes for business and personal use

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be nice if the printing problem didn't exist
Ordered this book and pages 55-88 are from some other HBR book. Therefore 2-8 essays are missing.Sent for a replacement....SAME ISSUE.Therefore, I am writing this to let you know to tread lightly as you may only get 75% of what you ordered.Had Amazon made it easy to remedy the situation (e.g. have someone hand-inspect it the third time) I would have been able to write a good review...but don't say I didn't warn you about the print run problem...

3-0 out of 5 stars High-Level Introduction, quick read, slightly dated
Title: Harvard Business Review on Innovation
Author: Various
Rating: *** (out of five stars)

The "Harvard Business Review on Innovation" is a compilation series of some older articles on the innovation topic. Each article summarizes a specific perspective on innovation. Some of the articles later lead to books. Overall the articles are good introductions, (by it's very nature, this is not deep or detailed) to the topics. This may lead the reader to pursue more detail in a subsequent book or same topic by another author. Some of the material is a bit dated, this shouldn't be too big of an issue for the reader looking for high-level introduction material. Also, many Harvard BR editions are critizied for being too academic.I think that is the nature of the series and to be expected. However this edition has a smattering of case-study material to make it real world enough for such a high-level introduction. This review has eight articles, (5 start rating system):
* Creating New Market Space, (Introductory, ***)
* Creating Breakthroughs in 3M, (User-lead case-study, ****)
* Building an Innovation Factory, (Create, capture, re-use ideas, ****)
* Knowing a Winning Business Idea When you See One, (Buyer and Pricing strategy, **)
* Meeting The Challenge of Disruptive Change, (How to handle change in your corporation, *****, read also Innovators Solution)
* Discovering New Point of Differentiation, (retail consumer oriented, **)
* From Spare Change to Real Change, (change for social motivation, *, surface level)
* Enlightened Experimentation, (Sound Ideas for moving Innovation to trail, ****, leaves you wanting a whole book on the subject)

Get it if: You would like a fast read, high-level over view of Innovation elements to wet your appetite or steer you to your next Innovation topic.Alternate: You need something you can finish on a plane ride.

Forget it if: You already know you want to go deeper into reading on Innovation concepts and methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good short article, help you catch up!
You must understand that Harvard Review books are always just snippets of the last 2 or 3 years articles on that subject, this book presented some of the best articles on Innovation during that period. If you are an innovation manager you should catch up with these fine articles, because they are short and easy to read during a plane flight, and gives you an understanding of advancements in this field.
Also I must commend the other reviewers for their very through reviews.
I would recommend advanced innovation managers to buy this book if they do not read HBR.

Product Description

The global economy is witnessing previously unseen levels of competitiveness, forcing business leaders to contend with unprecedented challenges. No longer can companies seize and hold a customer base by operating adequately. In order to enjoy a competitive advantage, an organization must operate at exemplary levels of performance in every facet of business and maintain that degree of excellence indefinitely. This is achieved through careful alignment of operational systems and the use of innovative process management initiatives. “Unless an organization is uniquely qualified to deal with its customers by understanding its own strengths and weakness,” writes internationally renowned operational management expert Christopher K. Ahoy, “it will be unable to understand what is required to move from the current paradigm of doing business.”

In Customer-Driven Operations Management, Ahoy distills the most current business theories and practices that will help you weed out and eliminate operational inefficiencies and put in place the necessary metrics for providing products and services better, cheaper, and faster than ever. Ahoy walks you through the steps of creating a world-class organization, which include

  • Mapping your company's processes to target weak points
  • Realigning management systems from functional to process-focused
  • Setting benchmarks throughout the process to help quantify levels of success
  • Establish a system of knowledge management for the seamless alignment of teams and departments
  • Improving process management using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies
  • Create a sound strategic planning initiative to eliminate future surprises

With diagrams and figures to highlight salient points, Customer-Driven Operations Management clarifies and simplifies the otherwise daunting task of enacting major changes in your company's operations systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
I, like several of the other reviewers, have known and admired Chris Ahoy's intelligence, knowledge, and mentoring skills that have never waned over the decades of his professional life. As with all things that Chris has ever decided to pursue, he is driven to excellence and that is what he has achieved in writing "Customer-Driven Operations Management". Does it read as a novel? No!It needs to be read as a Graduate -level text that offers a road map to excellence in this arena for those willing to invest the time and effort for achieving it, as has Chris Ahoy at Iowa State University. This book is also well supplemented with outstanding references and enlightening examples to assure that the lessons are well learned. Every Operations Management staffer should consider this book as required reading, and no professional seeking to catapult their company into a world-class operation should consider moving forward without first devouring this learning experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK
In Customer-Driven Operations Management, Christopher Ahoy, makes the point that the internal resources of the firm have to be given continuous review to align goals to actions, and also that they must be managed carefully for the firm's continued competitive advantage in the modernfast-paced, global economy. He alludes to the VRIO framework of analysis--those Valuable, Rare, Inimitable, and Organizationally-embedded aspects of the firm, that are critical factors to be scrutinized and tweaked to achieve optimum outcomes. These internal resources are the basis of differentiation of the company from its competitors. In this book Christopher Ahoy draws from his vast experience in strategic and operations management, to develop models of analysis that a firm can use to continuously improve itself via growth of the VRIO factors, and thereby meet and exceed its corporate vision. This is a valuable book for both practitioner and scholarly communities.

3-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive first stop for nonprofit management issues
If you have a management issue that needs attention in your nonprofit organization, make this book your first stop.It covers a multitude of relevant nonprofit management topics, including HR, fundraising, finance, IT, etc.

I say FIRST stop, however, because the book is probably notgoing to provide you with detailed enough information. Some topics, likeunrelated business income, are treated quite exhaustively.Others, likethe chapters on accounting and on how to solve a financial problem in anonprofit organization, were pretty light.(In the latter case, most ofthe chapter is spent on cutting expenses, while the ultimatesolution--increasing revenues--got only a page.)Each chapter, however, has a bibliography at the end which will direct you to further resources. This was the main value of the book for me.

My advice: good reference, but check this tome out of the library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Covers just about every conceivable topic of management
When the IRS recently took the position that special events can sometimes be taxed - for example, if an event takes six months or longer to create - U.S. fund development professionals and nonprofit managers began to ask, "Are our events going to have a problem"? and "What is the rationale for such a tax"? and "Where do I go for more information on this topic"?  If your development office had a copy of the just-published work, The Nonprofit Handbook: Management (Second Edition), you'd find your answer right there, in chapter 27, "Unrelated Business Income."  This encyclopedic volume on just about every conceivable topic on the subject of the management of nonprofit organizations is a well-thought-out collection of articles by many of the best experts on the various aspects of nonprofit management.  Indeed, its chief strength is that it covers so much ground -- covering strategic planning, human resources, communication, fund raising, information management, accounting, finance, and legal issues.  Tracy Connors, the book's editor, has done a good job in selecting the experts who have contributed articles.  Attorney Bruce Hopkins, for example, is perhaps the best known author of books and articles on the law of tax exempt organizations.  He has contributed a useful chapter on that subject in this volume.  (We'll be reviewing his book, Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations, in the future.)  In covering so much ground, the handbook at times leaves the reader wanting to delve deeper.  That was anticipated, it seems: Each chapter provides a "suggested reading" list, making the work a good launchpad for deeper study, if needed.  The Nonprofit Handbook:  Management is a valuable resource for anyone in a nonprofit organization responsible for strategic and operational management decisions.  That would include fund development officers in universities, health care organizations, arts organizations, cause-oriented nonprofits, and so forth.  It is also invaluable to nonprofit CEOs, COOs, CFOs, VPs, board members, human resources directors, and so forth.  ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The impact of expectations on productivity
J. Sterling Livingston was on the faculty of the Harvard Business School from 1941 to 1971. He founded the Sterling Institute Institute, a management consulting firm specializing in executive training and development, in 1967 and served as a Chairman of the Washington DC-based institute until 1998. He is currently the Sterling Center for Applied Managerial Leadership in Key Biscayne, Florida. This Harvard Business Review Classic article was originally published in 1969.

The author uses George Bernard Shaw's novel 'Pygmalion' as an metaphor to explain how managers can treat their subordinates in a way that leads to superior performance. The author's assumption is that "if managers' expectations are higher, productivity is likely to be excelllent. If their expectations are low, productivity is likely to be poor." However, according to Sterling Livingston, this phenomenon is not widely understood. In order to prove his case the author first discusses the impact of managerial expectations on productivity. But it is almost impossible for managers to mask low expectations from their subordinates. In fact, managers are more effective in communicating low expectations to their subordinates than in communicating high expectations to them. But managers' high expectations also have to past the test of reality: the expectations have to realistic and achievable. And the foundation for realistically high managerial expectations is the manager's ability to train and motivate subordinate. Research shows that managerial expectations have their most magical influence on young people. These young people base their own aspirations and the expectations of their superiors on the "reality" of past performance. And unless they have an outstanding record, it will become more and more difficult for them to generate mutually high expectations. So what should we do? Since a young person's first years are critical for future performance, they should be assigned to the most effective teachers. But these teachers should not typically be first-line managers; they should be experienced middle managers and upper-level executives. ".. if they are skillful and have high expectations, subordinates' self-confidence will grow, their capabilities will develop, and their productivity will be high." Or, in short, "the manager is Pygmalion."

Yes, this is a great article. It discusses a very important phenomenon - the impact of managerial expectations and behavior on productivity. The more positive the expectations, the more positive the results. This conclusion is very much in line with one of the latest business bestsellers - Daniel Goleman's 'Primal Leadership' (2002). Goleman uses different terminology, but just like Sterling Livingston, he also believes that emotional leadership drives performance. Monumental article which has to be read by leaders, managers, and MBA-students. The author uses simple business US-English. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Intresting and Excellent
This product has brought great insight and knowledge to me.I love it, i love it. I know it will help me make in making right decisions for my business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent primer for senior managers, BCM/DR practitioners, and IT managers
This quick introduction to crisis management is suitable for senior managers, for business continuity management or disaster recovery practitioners (BCM/DR), and for information technology (IT) managers as they are often the ones given the chore of implementing DR plans.

If you are a CEO or a senior manager in a firm of any size, this will convince you to prepare now for unforeseen problems that could endanger your business tomorrow.

If you are a BCM/DR professional, this book will give you material and ideas for developing a pro-active crisis management culture within your organization, right up to convincing the the board to give the program full support.

IT managers tasked with developing DR program will also benefit this way, but will also gain precious insight in how to communicate effectively with the media, in fact how to communicate with all stakeholders to get the organization's message across as it wants it understood.

This guide makes an excellent case that unexpected emergencies are best handled a long time before anything goes wrong. My only criticism is that it focuses too much on planning for specific scenarios, such as a fire, and not enough on more abstract impact scenarios, such as loss of premises whatever the reason. However, since it also strongly advocates the need to prepare for unforeseeable contingencies, this isn't a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb guide to preparing for and handling any corporate crisis
Be prepared. One day the company you own or help manage may face a severe crisis. Inexplicably, one of your most popular products suddenly proves lethally hazardous. Your accountant is frog-marched in handcuffs to the nearest slammer for embezzlement. Your plant in Malaysia blows up, injuring scores of locals. A tornado flattens your major warehouse complex and the surrounding town. Quick: What do you do? The best time to handle a corporate crisis is before it begins. First, assess the primary risks your company faces, then develop comprehensive contingency plans to face these potential crises. This superb book from the expert, lucid Harvard Business Essentials series provides a proven, step-by-step approach your company can use to plan for and deal with any corporate crisis. We strongly recommend this important guide to crisis planning and management. Its insightful analysis is well organized, clearly written and firmly supported with compelling case histories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contingency planning and preventive maintenance are essential, but there will still be situations when....

This is one of the volumes in the Harvard Business Essentials Series. Each offers authoritative answers to the most important questions concerning its specific subject. The material in this book is drawn from a variety of sources which include the Harvard Business School Press and the Harvard Business Review as well as Harvard ManageMentor®, an online service. I strongly recommend the official Harvard Business Essentials Web site (www.elearning.hbsp.org/businesstools) that offers free interactive versions of tools, checklists, and worksheets cited in this book and other books in the Essentials series. Each volume is indeed "a highly practical resource for readers with all levels of experience." And each is by intent and in execution solution-oriented. Although I think those who have only recently embarked on a business career will derive the greatest benefit, the material is well worth a periodic review by senior-level executives.

Credit Richard Luecke with pulling together a wealth of information and counsel from various sources. He is also the author of several other books in the Essentials series. In this instance, he was assisted by a subject advisor, Larry Barton, who is president of the American College. Together, they have carefully organized the material as follows. First, they explain why power is necessary in organizations "even though our society distrusts power and those who seek it." Next, they examine the sources of power. Then they explain why power is realized only through some form of expression. In Chapter 4, they examine influence in sharper focus, illustrating three specific tactics that any manager can use. Then in the next two chapters, Luecke and Reardon shift their attention to the concept of persuasion. They identify the four elements of persuasion and discuss how various audiences and people with diverse decision-making styles are receptive ("susceptible") to different forms of persuasion. Then in Chapter 6, they explain how to appeal both to the mind (with logic and/or evidence) and the to heart (by anchoring the given proposition in a human context). Hence the importance of compelling details, vivid images, similes, metaphors, analogies, and especially stories achieve resonance with an audience.

In Chapter 7, Luecke and Reardon provide some excellent suggestions to increase and enhance the impact of a formal presentation. "It suggests a presentation structure and a number of rhetorical devices perfected by the ancient Greeks. It also explains the various learning styles used by people and explains the importance of adapting each formal presentation to the needs, interests, and temperament of the given audience.

I also appreciate the three appendices provided. "In Leading When You're Not the Boss," Luecke and Reardon offer useful tips on how to be productive and effective in situations in which (usually lower-level managers) are expected to lead but have no formal power or authority to do so. Appendix B includes two forms by which to assess an audience and to assess one's own ability to persuade others. (Please check out Figures B-1 and B-2 on pages 135-139.) In the third appendix, Luecke and Reardon offer seven "Rules" to follow when preparing visuals for presentations that will have maximum impact.

Obviously, it is in an organization's best interests to formulate comprehensive contingency plans and then sustain preventive maintenance. However, there are developments and their consequences that, when they occur, create unforeseen crises to which organizations must respond. These are the situations in which organizations and their leaders define themselves, for better or worse.Hence the importance of information sources which can guide and inform not only contingency planning and preventive maintenance but also crisis response. Their value is even greater when a serious crisis occurs.

Those who share my high regard for this volume are urged to check out other volumes in the Essentials series (notably Managing Change and Transition) and Harvard Business Review on Crisis Management as well as Steven Fink's Crisis Management: Planning for the Inevitable and Eric Dezenhall and John Weber's Damage Control: Why Everything You Know About Crisis Management Is Wrong. Also, Jeffrey Pfeffer's What Were They Thinking?, Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement, Ram Charan's Know-How, Mike Green's Change Management Masterclass, and Enterprise Architecture As Strategy co-authored by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love this book. It is a must for any finance professional. I am a financial analyst and always find myself referring to this book as a quick reference during many projects. I don't think I can honestly work without it.

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK reference book
I use a few books as reference books during my ratio analysis of a companies position, and this one is just a backup. It's got tons of formulas, but most of the ones included in THIS book, you NEVER need to use in an analysis of financial statements.

The book seriously lacks explanations of what the ratios and formulas mean. It just vaguely states at the end of each formula who might use it and why, but doesn't go into the detail you'd want. The book just doesn't sit right. If you want a good reference book for ratio analysis of financial statements, than get "Business Ratios and Formulas: A Comprehensive Guide" By Steven M. Bragg

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy
I thought this book provides a lot of handy information without having to carry around smaller texts with less explanations or larger heavier texts with too much info.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Handbook for Accounting students
The book is a nice handbook for students majoring in Finance and Accounting students. It has all the necessary explanations of the formulas along with good examples. As a person with some exposure to Finance and Accounting,I found the book to be extremely useful for students and pros in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective refresher ... Efficient reference
