4-0 out of 5 stars Good nonfiction for toddlers
We bought this -and others in the series- to keep at our beach house on the gulf coast of Florida. Our kids are fascinated by the sea life down there.

The books have a combination of photos, text and illustrations. The photos are nice, clear shots, but don't always match the text perfectly which is why they add the illustrations. It works!Best of all, there is not too much information- just enough for a toddler/preschooler.My kids,2 and 4, don't pick this every night, but it's definitely a regular in the mix.

I think the photos in the manatee book are some of the best in this series. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time...
This book is incredibly misleading - the author has no authority or scientific data to back up his rediculous claims - esp. his conspiracy thoery that scientists and environmentalists (including Rachel Carson) have been misleading the public for years.I was asked to read this book while working for boaters facing a manatee "problem", and was so disgusted and annoyed with the poor writing that I could barely finish it.

1-0 out of 5 stars McGill is not a biologist.
Tom McGill is not a biologist and has none of the credentials necessary to question the integrity of scientists. He doesn't even write well.
He and his buddy Ron Pritchard are pro-development and simply don't like conservation. This book is junk; avoid it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manatees only endangered by USFWS/FWC, but they are helped by McGill's Book!
Implementors of The Wildlands Project [no, I don't see 'black helicopters] certainly are howling mad that Captain McGill's obvious caring and affection for the manatee shine through so clearly. Followers of the likes of Dave Foreman and Reed Noss seek to slander the decades of hard work, serious research and honest effort that make this book a must for all schools and libraries. No, "Conspiracy of Ignorance" doesn't waste the reader's time with the sugar coating of Language Deception, but it does provide the meat and potatoes of facts, unvarnished. I hope that many, many more will read this book for themselves and consider that Captain McGill does not stand to profit from the manatees. He clearly seeks only to share the truth about them -- a truth that no one supporting The Wildlands Project will acknowledge or admit. While the proofreading could have been better, this remains a book with facts to be reckoned with.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book.Must be for EPA ecologists to try to bury it.
I read this book. There is seriously interesting info here if you haven't been following along with the manatee fight in Florida.I didn't know much except for what we were taught in school ("Manatees are rare and must be protected at all costs"), but when one actually looks at the hard data McGill presents here, you realize that you've been spoon fed a line of bull.I don't care much for the "conspiracy theory", but I will say that after I read this, I went to the primary sources, and I am angry that the ecologists and wildlife advocates have been lying for so long.I don't care why they lied, but they did.

By the way, the negative reviewer going by "Walter Nelson" is an Environmental Protection Agency ecologist. You don't get much more hardcore environmentalist than that, so take his "I'm not biased" disclaimer with a grain of salt.Read the book for yourself. The negative reviews here seem to be mostly from environmentalists anxious to keep you from seeing how they've lied to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Local governments sued into submission, read this book.
I know Captain McGill. He's a good man, and his book was well written. Was he angry when he wrote it?You bet!Did the book "cherry pick" or mischaracterize the mortality and other data? No.

The book explains how scientific studies have been mischaracterized and misused by folks with ulterior motives for the past few years in Florida to limit growth.Particularly, by slowing boating traffic down to a crawl and stopping home development in swanky neighborhoods on the coast and the canals. The information is well-laid out, and it's somewhat disturbing when you realize that the Federal laws that applied in the case of the manatee can be applied in many other places.

I've got to say, I see a lot of attacks here from Florida folks who I doubt ever read the book. From hardcore environmentalists to "smart growth" types to property owners looking to boost their values, quite a few people have a very vested interest in reducing dock permitting in Florida and imposing slow speed zones on their neighbors. It isn't some "X-Files" conspiracy, nor does it take much to scare local and state politicians with a few well-placed lawsuits into imposing unecessary restrictions under a settlement.Save the Manatee Club did it, and from what I've heard from the local politicos, the Club burned every bridge it had in the state when it started suing a few years back. You get the idea how angry people are from reading Captain McGill's book.

By the way, I'm not some raving boater, I live in DC.But I have been forced to squirm in front of the family of a young girl killed in a "slow speed" zone. Those zones may protect manatees, but people are dying in them because of the increased aggravation and speeding they are causing. That poor girl died in terrible pain, and I know for a fact that Captain McGill had to meet those same poor folks, so you'll have to forgive him a little for his anger at the activists.

Long story short, this is actually a very good book.Don't listen to the folks slamming it, none of them have actually read it.Check it out for yourself and you'll understand how a vocal minority can cowe local governments into submission...and how a handful of folks could think they can "fix" Amazon's review process! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Plesant Exciting Surprise
This delightful book was recommended by a friend who I did not think was into books.Boy was I wrong. A couple of high school teenagers witness a murder while courting on a moon lit beach in Florida. They naturally report the incident to the authorities, to find their lives could be indanger. The tale moves at a fast pace thru their going to college and their1930's courtship in the south Florida and Atlanta, Georgia areas.Whilefollowing a mystery that is suspenseful and not solved until almost thelast page at a college football game the reader is treated to an intimatevisit with the way it was in the 30's.Entertaing and great for teenagersand seniors alike.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Manatee," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Manatee in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Manatee when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Manatee, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faulkner does it again!
It it obvious from reading Douglas Falkner's book on Manatees and how their lives are impacted by over a million boats in Florida's waters every year, and by Florida's 15 million residents and 60 million tourist every year, why these gentle creatures are on the endangered spieces list.

Faulkner's running text, though it is only 101 pages long gives one little opportunity to put the book down, nor does his lively writing style give one little incentive.

Power boats are not the only enemies of the Manatees.Man made pollution, habitat destruction, pesticides and herbicides as well are killing the Manatees and the beauty that once was Florida.

The title of the book, Of Manatees and Man, is well chosen for the life and death of the manatees cannot be seperated from the life and death of man and his habitates. ... Read more
