Product Description

The influenza pandemic of 1918-1919 killed as many as fifty million people worldwide and affected the vast majority of Canadians. Yet the pandemic, which came and left in one season, never to recur in any significant way, has remained difficult to interpret. What did it mean to live through and beyond this brief, terrible episode, and what were its long-term effects?

Influenza 1918 uses Winnipeg as a case study to show how disease articulated abd helped to re-define boundaries of social difference. Esyllt W. Jones examines the impact of the pandemic in this fragmented community, including its role in the eruption of the largest labour confrontation in Canadian history, the Winnipeg General Strike of 1919. Arguing that labour historians have largely ignored the impact of infectious disease upon the working class, Jones draws on a wide range of primary sources including mothers' allowance and orphanage case files in order to trace the pandemic's affect on the family, the public health infrastructure, and other social institutions. This study brings into focus the interrelationships between epidemic disease and working class, gender, labour, and ethnic history in Canada.

Influenza 1918 concludes that social conflict is not an inevitable outcome of epidemics, but rather of inequality and public failure to fully engage all members of the community in the fight against disease.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Lady's Life on a Farm in Manitoba by Mrs. Cecil Hall
This book is a compilation of letters from an English Lady writing home to her family about her six month stay at her brother's homestead in Manitoba. She travels a little into the United States as well. It's not a riveting book, but it is fun to get a taste of what homesteading and the towns were like in late 1800's.Rapid City, South Dakota, had only 50 homes! What I liked about it was that it was a positive picture of homesteading. Not all pioneers had horrific experiences. I only wish she had gone into more details.Reading this book made me want to try other pioneer memoirs. If you read this book and like it, you will really enjoy Letters of a Woman Homesteader by Elinore Pruitt Stewart. She goes into a lot more details and you wish she was your friend, too! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A world beyond our comprehension
On its face, this is a dry ethnographic treatise. But getting beyond that, the author describes the lives and values of a people which we, civilized to the point of no return, can scarcely comprehend. I was attracted to this book after reading Eric Sevareid's classic "Canoeing with the Cree". Sevaried passed through the Berens River outpost perhaps within days of Hallowell's first visit. Hallowell takes us much deeper into Ojibwa culture than Sevareid and his friend Walt Post could have imagined. They did meet the leader of theOjibwa band at Berens River, Chief William Berens, and many of the people, but with little understanding -- not to condemn them in any way. It is a fascinating exposure to a way of life which is now gone forever.

It is difficult to comprehend a society in which there are basically no laws or law enforcement: a society held together by personal honor and respect for traditions of behavior learned from birth. The Ojibwa living east of Lake Winnipeg lived in unfathomable remoteness and isolation except for the band at Berens River which is right on the lake. Hallowell and William Berens visited isolated interior bands as far as 350 miles up river. The river itself provided the only access; the journey took weeks.
Berens River, Manitoba still exists. You can catch a glimpse of it on Google earth. As I write, it is 16ºF with snow expected. Forget about seeing the weather radar, only a satellite image is available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet These Interesting Folks
And I thought I knew the Ojibwa.Hah.I'll tell you one thing. If you're ever going to be on the Berens River in Manitoba with a few days to kill and plan on meeting people from the Ojibwa Nation, well you've just got to have this great book. The description of the Ojibwa diet alone is worth the cover price. And the index is to die for.
Surprised it hasn't yet been made into a major motion picture. ... Read more

Product Description
Every Stone a Story is a collection of stories gleaned from Manitoba’s buried history. Each is illustrated with a photograph of a headstone and each describes the life, death and/or experiences of someone buried in a particular cemetery. The stories are often about the famous or infamous, but equally often they are about people little known outside their communities, but who have done something extraordinary. The stories are grouped according to their topics: politicians, artists, and sportsmen and women, crimes and scandals, accidents and disasters, and pioneers. ... Read more

Product Description
The original people of the Hudson Bay lowlands, often known as the Lowland Cree and known to themselves as Muskekowuck Athinuwick, were among the first Aboriginal peoples in northwestern North America to come into contact with Europeans. This book challenges long-held misconceptions about the Lowland Cree, and illustrates how historians have often misunderstood the role and resourcefulness of Aboriginal peoples during the fur-trade era.

Although their own oral histories tell that the Lowland Cree have lived in the region for thousands of years, many historians have portrayed the Lowland Cree as relative newcomers who were dependent on the Hudson's Bay Company fur-traders by the 1700s. Historical geographer Victor Lytwyn shows instead that the Lowland Cree had a well-established traditional society that, far from being dependent on Europeans, was instrumental in the survival of traders throughout the network of HBC forts during the 18th and 19th centuries. ...
