Product Description

Eminent Anglo-Saxonist Nicholas Howe explores how the English, in the centuries before the Norman Conquest, located themselves both literally and imaginatively in the world. His elegantly written study focuses on Anglo-Saxon representations of  place as revealed in a wide variety of texts in Latin and Old English, as well as in diagrams of holy sites and a single map of the known world found in British Library, Cotton Tiberius B v.  The scholar’s investigations are supplemented and aided by insights gleaned from his many trips to physical sites.

The Anglo-Saxons possessed a remarkable body of geographical knowledge in written rather than cartographic form, Howe demonstrates. To understand fully their cultural geography, he considers Anglo-Saxon writings about the places they actually inhabited and those they imagined. He finds in Anglo-Saxon geographic images a persistent sense of being far from the center of the world, and he discusses how these migratory peoples narrowed that distance and developed ways to define themselves.

1-0 out of 5 stars I never got the book or a refund
Dont try to buy this as you will never get it or get a refund after you waste time trying to get this seller to respond and send the book. Too bad, I would have much rather had the book than a dispute with Amazon. Cheap.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Mexico History in Maps
My copy of this book is becoming tattered from wear. When I checked Amazon listings I discovered it's now out of print.I'd recommend anyone interested in the history and demographics of New Mexico buy one of these while it's still possible to get it used.

The Contents includes numerous maps under each of the following headings:Natural Environment, Historical Landscapes, Population Characteristics, Economic Characteristics, Cultural Elements and Government.Although the title is several years out of date in some areas, it's still the best document of the kind I've ever seen for the State of New Mexico in a broad-brush quick reference or for an in-depth study of certain aspects of New Mexico history you won't find elsewhere.I'd love to see UNM Press do another run of this one or print it on a book by book POD.It's entirely too good to allow to become unavailable. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Engaging Map Activities
I recently used this book to reinforce geography concepts required by my curriculum. This was designed as a comprehensive unit, which allowed my students to use their newly acquired geography skills in a creative and meaningful manner. Each activity/lesson plan is detailed and purposefully written.I found the "Keep in Mind" suggestions especially helpful when working with my kids. I highly recommend this book to any teacher in the intermediate grades.Note: The treasure chest went together perfectly when printed on card stock.

5-0 out of 5 stars My kids LOVED this book!
I teach 5th and 6th grade and I am ALWAYS looking for new and exciting activities to help engage students in mapping concepts. This book reinforces so many great concepts that we work on with REALLY fun and engaging activities. It also allows for differentiation amongst that range of learners in my room. Thanks for putting such a fantastic product on the market!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK.
If you have to do "something" for social studies, this is OK.
Activities are not well thought out. They recommend decorating the 'treasure chest'.Fine, however the treasure chest is really small, and really flimsy.Maybe if it were made on cardstock?
I have used this book a few times already. It's 50/50 on this.Mixed review is all I can say.. if you need it buy it, but don't get your hopes up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the map collector
If I could have just one book on map collecting this would be it.The book is an enjoyable read, and written in a crystal clear fashion. The book contains much essential information for collectors: map terminology, printing methods, translation of common phrases into English, how to judge condition, and blunt advice on the workings of the marketplace. All of this plus great reference material on map makers, styles, and periods.I've had this book forseveral years now and find myself reaching for it time and again.Thank you Dr. Manasek!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
This is truly an outstanding book. It is exceptionally well-written and the number of illustrations is exceptional. Unlike most map books, this one uses illustrations to make specific points aboutmaps, as well as to show what the map looks like. There is a huge amount of information in here - including suchthings as illustrated details about pocket map construciton, microscope pictures of paper, information about acids (for the non-chemist!) and a wonderful section of over a hundred maps, one per page, arranged chronologically. I found the CollectingOldMaps website a very valuable collateral since it shows up-to-date prices for all the maps in the book. The readability and info in this book make it a bargain - it is beautiful, also!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very useful, substantial book
A book of substance. "Collecting Old Maps" really deals with the subject and is not a watered-down survey of old maps someone thinks we should collect. This book breaks with the old way map books were written and is a refreshing "out of the box" way to look at old map collecting. There is no other book like it and I don't know where else one can get the information that is in here. Very well written, a delight to read and not dumbed-down. There is even some sly humor in here! I agree with the earlier reviews so there is no point in repeating everything they said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great present!
Love the book! Well written and very informative. I agree with the previous reviewers. I thank the autor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Got this book for Christmas and read the whole thing through. Unlike other map reference books in my collection, I actually read this one cover to cover! It is a remarkable book and the author shares what is a vast knowledge with us in a very unusual and direct way. The illustrations are really great and there are lots of them. Where else, for example, can you learn the names of the different parts of a folding map, with each part illustrated with real examples? Every page seems to have several. It is a big and very beautiful book. I will now go and re-read it. ... Read more
