Product Description

The Mjølnir impact structure was recognized in 1993 and included in the Earth Impact Database in 1996, based on the discoveries of unequivocal meteorite impact indicators such as shocked quartz, Ir-enrichments, possible glass remnants, fragments of nickel-rich iron oxides, in addition to the convincing complex crater shape of the structure. This book presents the geological and geophysical history of the Barents Sea region along with the discovery of the Mjølnir impact crater. We place the Mjølnir event into the geological framework of the region and present elaborative numerical models of its formation and associated tsunami generation. The book represents an update and synthesis as well as the complete compilation of the Mjølnir crater studies.

Product Description

Marine environmental conditions such as storms, storm surges and wave heights are directly experienced by, for example, off-shore operations or coastal populations. The authors review and bring together the state-of-the-art and present day knowledge about historical changes, recent trends and concepts on how marine environmental conditions may change in the future as well as discuss models and data problems.

Product Description
This volume is one of the most significant results of the conference "Science-Technology Synergy for Research in Marine Environment: Challenges for the XXI Century" held in Erice and Ustica, Italy, September 1999.It presents state of the art developments in technology and scientific research in sea floor observatories.Scientific conclusions of earth science and environmental studies obtained from these observatories as well as results from long term monitoring are provided.Descriptions of new technologies enabling deep sea long term observatories are offered and marine environment and risk assessment issues are discussed.

This is the first work detailing recent and on going experiments world wide specifically devoted to deep sea multi disciplinary observation systems, the technology enabling sea floor observatories, and the presentation of first results from these systems.

Description:
A prograding and aggrading depositional system has been mapped from seismic data in the Sisimiut Basin, offshore West Greenland. Seismic stratigraphic analysis resulted in mapping of three seismic sequences and internal boundaries. Mounds at the base of the prograding sequences may represent massflows, which could be prospective. The sealing deposits are Cretaceous claystone, indicated by correlation to the Ikermiut-1 well. Local closures of mounds, regional seal and hydrocarbon traces in the region indicate a potential for stratigraphic hydrocarbon leads. Amplitude interpretation indicates possible mass-flow deposits within the sequences as well as half-graben syn-rift deposits below, both of which may be prospective. ... Read more

Description:
Compilation of new and vintage aeromagnetric data from the Norwegian and Greenland Seas of the NE Atlantic provides evidence for a different interpretation of several tectonic elements. The previously interpreted oceanic fracture zones (Gleipne, Surt, Bivrost, Jenegga and Vesteralen) do not exist; these were artefacts of poor navigation and wide line spacing of the vintage dataset. This reinterpretation impacts our understanding of the early spreading history of the North Atlantic, as the opening of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea between the Jan Mayen and Senja-Greenland fracture zones occurred along a stable axis without offsets of the oceanic spreading anomalies or jumps in spreading axis. These results contradict the hypothesis that a spatial relationship exists between transfer zones and fracture zones on the Lofoten margin, and on the NE Greenland margin to which they have been projected. Simplified palaeogeographic reconstruction of the aeromagnetic map to Anomaly 22 reveals that a c. 50km wide magnetic anomaly cuts across spreading anomalies 24A, 24B and 23 from the Voring Marginal High on the Norwegian margin to Traill O on the East Greenland coast. The anomaly is interpreted to represent an igneous complex referred to as the Traill-Voring igneous complex (TVIC). The complex crosscuts anomaly 22 on the Greenland margin, suggesting that the igneous activity was active until c. 50Ma and can be linked up with the NNE-trending initial magmatic lineament (IML) extending between Traill O and Kangerlussuaq. The IML has been suggested to relate to a failed attempt of direct linkage between the Reykjanes and Mohns Ridges. The magnetic response of the TVIC along the Voring margin has previously been interpreted as representing anomaly 24A and 24B. Such an interpretation required the erroneous introduction of an abandoned spreading ridge. ... Read more

Description:
The Kangamiut ridge, offshore southern West Greenland, was formed by fault movements that separate the ridge into two elongate segments. The Kangamiut-1 well was drilled on the western flank of the northern segment of the ridge and terminated in Precambrian basement. Gravity data show that the two segments of the ridge may be different in composition. The unfiltered Bouguer gravity data show fairly constant values over the southern segment declining to the north, whereas the high-cut filtered gravity data show a marked difference in the anomalies over the two segments that mirrors their structural division. Forward modelling of the gravity data indicates the presence of sedimentary wedges on the flanks of the ridge below top basement as interpreted from seismic reflection data. The possible presence of sedimentary wedges along the flanks of the Kangamiut ridge widens the possibilities of explaining the apparent presence of hydrocarbons in the Kangamiut-1 well that was unproperly tested, and the consequent petroleum potential of the southern West Greenland area. ... Description:
Three turbine seep-tents measured gas flux variations including an ejection at one tent. Several conceptual models of hydrocarbon migration were developed from the relationship between fluxes at the tents. (1) A resistor-capacitor network to model oil and gas flux in the seep system including an oil regulator model. (2) A fracture oil-deposition model where oil deposited on fracture walls progressively clogs and then blocks fractures. Also measured were bubble size distributions for minor and major vents that were narrow, and broad, respectively, and varied with time due to oil flux. Very oily bubbles with different trajectories were observed. ... Read more
