Product Description
Ever wondered what to do with a bevel cluster or its' individual pieces?Well American Bevel has thrown down the gauntlet and the artists at Paned Expressions have picked it up.Nearly 60 patterns are included in this unusual collection of designs. All patterns are full size and a caution is given on the CD to not resize due to the fixed size of bevel clusters.Included are a mix of floral, quilt, Egyptian and fantasy themes to name a few; finally some new and unique ways to use those brilliant and beautiful bevel clusters and their pieces. All patterns are included in glass image and the files on the disk are presented in .jpg, .tif, and .eye computer formats for both PC's and Mac's. This is CD #18 in the series: the Paned Expressions Studios Stained Glass Pattern Library. Each of the almost 60 patterns can be exported for use in any craft that requires defined segments to indicate a change of color or texture. Crafters who find creating their own designs a challenge will love working with these patterns. These designs are ideal to use in machine and hand embroidery; for quilting and quilt appliqué; for china, glass and silk painting; for marquetry and woodworking, for fusing, etching, mosaics and cardmaking. ... Product Description

Although intarsia—the assembly of various woods into a unified mosaic piece—is often perceived as a challenging, unapproachable woodcraft, this guidebook rejects that notion by describing the small, achievable steps, thereby offering crafters an easy entry-point into this rewarding art form. Following a progression, this resource starts simply, teaching how to cut basic shapes and introducing sanding concepts, and then leads to more advanced skills, such as stack cutting and finishing techniques that add shading and grain to the mosaic masterpiece. Each step is organized into 17 total mini-lessons, including practice exercises and a final step-by-step guided project. Five additional patterns for each skill level round out the chapters for a total of 20 patterns.

Separate sections cover the necessary tools and materials, the skills required, and the specific types of wood that can be used. And for woodworkers who master the basics, the book shows how to enhance veneers through parquetry, cutting veneers into geometric patterns; sand shading, using sand to change the color tone of wood; pyrography, using a pen to burn shapes on to a veneer; and cutting slivers, inserting thin strips of wood into background veneers.David Hume is a marquetry and ceramic designer from Scarborough in Yorkshire, England. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners
Being a beginner with marquetry myself, I found this book very helpful. I do however wish it would have covered the use of hide glue for hammer veneering and the use of a scroll saw to cut veneers. Other than that, this book is very good. It covers selecting stock, design, and cutting with a knife.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marquetry Made Easy
The most important point to be made about this book the ease in which Hume manages to keep his descriptives and explanations simple enough for the beginners to understand yet complex enough to hold the more experienced enthusiast. Hume goes from the beginners first steps on to more complexthings such as designing your own pieces. Hume doesnt just put boringtechniques down on paper, he takes us on a journey of creating a completepiece. All the designs needed are in the book so that the reader can buildthe piece along side the book if so wished. This is probably one of thebest buys I have made and is a valuable companion when I am designing andcreating any of my pieces. Definatly great value for money. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars 99% beautiful pictures, 1% how to
I bought this book to learn how to do inlay. The subtitle for this book "Design and Technique for Fine Woodworking" is misleading. Don't get me wrong if you want to look at great inlay work this book is for you. But if by some chance you actually want to learn how to do it yourself don't waste your time or your dollar. I recommend, "The Art of Wood Inlay" by George Stevens if you are looking for useful how too information.

Robinson's book on the Art of Inlay is terrific and instructive in two aspects. First, the examples of his inlays are beautiful and bound to give the beginning and even advanced students many ideas. Second, theinstructive content and presentation are first rate. It is easy to see inLarry's lucid explanations, that he is an excellent teacher who hasorganized and presented his material in a way to make it easily accessibleto students at all levels. While I bought the book to learn how to inlay aguitar fingerboard and peghead, Larry has given me many ideas on otherforms of the art of inlay. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars simple is the key word
I enjoyed the first 70 pages of the book. The author talked about technique, finishes, etc. I was disappointed in the the actual objects. The patterns were not full size and there were no measurments given. It was all sort of vague.

Plus, I understoof Marquetry to be with the use of scroll saws and coping saws. The author never even showed these techniques.

It was an interesting view, but NOT for the beginner wishing to learn the true art of marquetry. It is, indeed, "simple."

5-0 out of 5 stars All projects include templates and instructions
"Marquetry" is the cutting and assembly of a variety of think woods (called veneers) to make a colorful pattern and showcase the beauty of wood. In Simple Marquetry, Mike Burton draws upon his more than forty years of experience and expertise to show the reader how to transform plan objects into esthetically impressive functional and decorative items with a series of easy-to-follow techniques. There is an extensive and basic "how-to" section for the novice, and one that does not require elaborate equipment or expensive setups. This is followed by fifteen projects ranging from a set of kitchen canisters embellished with rustic images to a striking contemporary design created by repeating geometric shapes. All projects include templates and detailed, step-by-step instructions which are augmented by photography. Simple Marquetry is ideal for the weekend hobbyist and a wonderful introduction to a specialized and enduringly beautiful craft.

5-0 out of 5 stars Expert Secerets of Marquetry

Mr burton has shared with his readers the techniques, tools, proper processes and product inter-actions seldom disclosed by an artist. The process is explained in such detail that failure is not even a consideration. 5-0 out of 5 stars fine introduction to modern veneering
David Square has written a book covering the basics of veneering as it is praticed today in the small professional or serious amateur shop.

Somewhat brief chapters describe the hammer and the mechanical methods of applying veneer. Mr. Square offers instructions for making a veneering hammer and for setting up an inexpensive mechanical press, for cutting and joining veneer, and for handling hide glue. Two small projects illustrate these techniques, while pointing out their capabilities and their limitations. This discussion should adequately prepare those unfortunate souls, whom budget constraints or fear of commitment prevent from investing in professional tools, to undertake small projects successfully.

The author spends the rest of the book discussing vacuum veneering, the least expensive practicable method for veneering the large panels needed for casework or furniture making and the only economically viable method for working with curved forms. He weighs the costs and benefits of commercial and homemade vacuum systems, offers clear instructions for basic and advanced pressing techniques, and illustrates his discussion with two not completely unappealing furniture projects. After reading this book, I was thoroughly convinced that vacuum veneering is the only profitable approach to veneer in the small shop. Following its advice, I purchased a commercial vacuum system and successfully veneered panels for casework on my first attempt, and with little effort or waste. The labor savings on this one job, compared to the cost of setting up and taking down multiple cauls with numerous clamps, was enough to recover the cost of the vacuum system.

I strongly recommend this book, and the techniques it endorses, to anyone sufficiently serious about veneering to invest moderately in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much of one topic
This book has a fairly pretentious title: "The Veneering Book." Not "A Veneering Book". Not "A Guide to Veering by one guy who wrote some articles for Fine Woodworking." No, it is called "The Veneering Book" and as such makes the pretense of being authoritative on the subject of veenering.

The problem is that this book is mostly focused on vaccuum veneering. In fact, 90 pages are dedicated to every facet of vacuum veneering, covering 6 chapters. The remaining 47 pages of text lightly cover how veneer is made, Hammer Veneering, and Mechanical Veneering. No information is provided at all about dry glue veneering, flattening veneer, patching holes in highly figured veneer, and many other important topics.

I bought this book a few years ago to learn about veneering. After all, it is published by Fine Woodworking and is called: "The Veneering Book."I was disappointed to find that it was so focused on vacuum veneering--which requires a much larger investment in equipment and storage space than does the dry glue or hammer methods. I can whole heartedly recommend a book called "Venering, Foundation Course" by Micheal Burton. It is far superior for the beginner, and has much more depth for the experienced.

This book should have been called "The Vacuum Veneering Book With a Little Bit of Other Material Thrown in at the Beginning to Fool the Unwary into Buying it."... ;) ... Read more

Product Description
For centuries the art of marquetry has been centered in Paris, where the tradition has been transmitted only within workshops concentrated in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. The outside world, therefore, has had very limited knowledge of the techniques used by the masters of this art. The publication of this English-language edition of La Marquetrie gives amateurs, art historians, creative woodworkers, and conservators access to an invaluable body of knowledge of the techniques of marquetry, covering the history of the craft as well as explanations of how a marqueter's studio is organized and the materials, instruments, drawing, preparation, and procedures used in the craft. It combines a thorough explanation of the craft techniques with detailed analysis of period examples, thereby giving readers a better understanding of marquetry pieces and new insights into shop practices. The book is an invaluable resource both for the art historian and the practicing craftsperson. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, beautiful, must-have!
If you want to make marquetry, buy marquetry or just appreciate marquetry this is an excellent resource. It has the kind of detailed information coupled with drawings and a bounty of color photos rarely seen in one book.Worth the money!!Go see the exhibit at the Getty!

This book is published by the Getty museum, which has an absolutely wonderful permanent exhibit on marquetry that includes many fine examples and a touchable how-to exhibit depicting start to finish manufacture of marquetry furniture. The book is a detailed how-to on various types of marquetry (including wood, metal and stone) with both color (over 150 color photos, more color pics than B&W) and black-and-white pictures of a large variety of examples from Renaissance through 17th and 18th century through modern (not too many or too-weird modern), plus many photos showing marquetry in progress in the how-to section. It is also a large, beautiful enough book for your coffeetable. If only every art/craft topic could have such a wonderful book.

Quem faz marchetaria nas horas vagas tera uma boa referencia, inclusive com a historia dessa arte. Capa dura, muito ilustrado, acredito que tera um lugar de honra em sua biblioteca.

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this
Marquetry is impressive if you are making a simple flower or a project as ornate as the examples that are given in this book. Covering the art form from the early adopters in France and Italy, he explains in detail the procedures, as well as the tools that are used. When you see some of the pictures of the projects, you will think that you need a lifetime of practice to get to those levels, and maybe you do. They are so elaborate and ornate that you will appreciate what can be done in the art form.
The book is large and is something worth featuring on a shelf. It is wonderfully illustrated, and they don't short you on the full color photographs.
The chapters are; Veneer Decoration, History, The Marqueters Workshop, The Materials, The Instruments, The Drawing, Preparation, Procedures, Frisage and Jeux De Fond, The Construction of Cutting Tools, and Conclusion.
The book is 14" x 10" and every page is packed with beautiful color photographs, and at the very least a drawing. Makes for an interesting read, as well as seeing what is being explained in full color. With so many full size color photos, you can see why the book is more expensive than a standard book.
Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned practitioner in the art form, this book will capture you. See the highest forms in the art, chosen by the top museums for display. All in all a first class reference. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I found this book to be completely comprehensive on the subject of marquetry.Everyone who loves this art form will want to have this in their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb book. Excellent pictures, great explanations.
I have two books of the same author: Masterpieces of marquetry (or something simmilar since it is written in French) and Marquetry. Each of the books cost over 100 USD in France and belong to a collection this author has published on the same subject. The Marquetry book (in English) I believe is the best book of its class. It has very detailed sketches of real antique designs. It not only explains the techniques but also stone inlaying, designing of tools and benches for cutting materials, etc. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners
I'm beginning to build guitars and wanted to do inlay work which was a little more intricate than simple pearl dots. The writer explains the process completely. The book also has many photos showing incredible inlay art which serves as inspiration for detailed guitar fingerboard art as well as inspiration for inlay art not associated with instuments. I've never even wanted to build a jewelry box with inlay and marquetry. Now I'm inpired to do just that. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Master Craftsman
I should start out this review by confessing that I'm biased.I own a custom guitar on which Larry Robertson did the inlay work.Since I'm one of those people who gets very involved in the design of anything that interests me, Larry and I had quite a few talks about what I wanted and how things would be done. This was an educational experience that was worth the price of entry itself, and the result never fails to amaze me.

What convinced me to approach Robinson about the work was the content of this small, but impressive volume. It is one thing to know that a craftsman is a master by reputation, and another to see the evidence in print before you.In my opinion Larry is the U.S.'s premier master of inlay, only surpassed on this continent by Grit Laskin, a Canadian Luthier who does it all, and very well.

The technical portion of this book is excellent.Robinson's written style is so straightforward that my first reaction was that he was leaving something out.But he really doesn't.Between the text and the illustrations, there is enough information and inspiration to last through more than a rack full of guitars.Whether you are a luthier trying to make something special, or a connoisseur of the guitar and its relatives, this book belongs on your shelfs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction - want more!
This book is unquestionably a fine collection of the author's work, which is beautiful, and a fantastic book for giving you a start on the process of inlay. Robinson's writing is excellent, as clear as you could get. And his sequence of coverage makes a lot of sense, too. This is a very good introduction to the possibilities and the process of inlay and if that's what you are looking for then it is worth buying.
But I gave it 4 stars because the book focuses only on his own work and because the promise of "design and technique" is not fully actualized. It's just that one would appreciate somewhat more depth of coverage, adding information on "pitfalls" in addition to "process", as well as a more comprehensive look at other people's possibilities in design. And, I would have really loved to have had some very close up photographs of inlay details, and even photographs of "bad" work and mistakes for reference. In that case, this would be a classic on the topic. It's probably more work than his intention of writing this book, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new edition if that were the case, and as a fellow artisan I would truly appreciate it. How about it, Robinson? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alot of inspiring depictions
I bought this book to give me some insight into doing inlays for a custom build I currently have underway. I give 4 stars rather than 5 just due to the tecnical descriptions being a little lighter than expected. The provided examples of inlays however is overwhelming! Some truly incredible and inspiring works shown in full color pictures. Back to the tecnical discussion, the methods required to do this are covered and I suppose the "briefness" really leans toward the fact that hands-on is so much more of this than the theory. The author gives the required info for one to then sit down and go hands-on. I do recommend this book for anyone seriously planning to get hands-on with inlay work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smooth transaction and a wonderful book!
Outstanding book on the subject of the art of inlay. Spectacular cover shot of the Martin.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art of inlays
Easy read, plenty of ideas, Understable and descriptive. Explains the art clearly from tools to materials and ways to produce art for final work.
You will finish with a good understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars Art of inlay...
This is undoubtedly an inspirational book. However, it lacks much detail for the studnet, interested in learning wood inlay. It doesn't move beyond the basics of cutting inlays and so farth. Anyone can figure that much out. If you want a complete book for inlaying, look elsewhere; if you're interested in the work of Larry Robinson, then look no farther.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inlay
I didn't have any formal background or knowledge of inlay. This book went through the fundamentals and gave good insight on what to start with and little tricks of the trade.I recommend this book for the beginner. ... Read more
