5-0 out of 5 stars what a nice introduction of state of Maryland
I bought this book for kids who have recently moved to Maryland. It gives a lot of interesting facts of the state of Maryland. And the illustrations are wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars childs book
interesting for a child as well as the adult that is reading it. It grows with the child. It has a childs version, then a history version as they grow to understand. Very good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Series
This is a great series - esp. if you'd like to introduce a place before visiting. We bought L is for Lobster before visiting Maine & found it was fun for many levels of readers and great pics for the little ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful illustrations! Informative too.
I bought this book for a 2-year-old, but it is definitely for an older child, so I am giving it to a 5-year-old instead. The illustrations are colorful and realistic -- almost photographic in detail. Each letter represents something about Maryland. For instance, E is for Eastern Shore. There is a short verse pertaining to each letter, as well as a side-panel that gives a longer, more detailed explanation about that thing. This is the type of book that should stay in the family library, and can be enjoyed by adults too. If my grandmother were still alive, I would buy it for her, because she had so much Maryland pride. ... Read more

Product Description

In The Oyster Question, Christine Keiner applies perspectives of environmental, agricultural, political, and social history to examine the decline of Maryland’s iconic Chesapeake Bay oyster industry.

Oystermen have held on to traditional ways of life, and some continue to use preindustrial methods, tonging oysters by hand from small boats. Others use more intensive tools, and thus it is commonly believed that a lack of regulation enabled oystermen to exploit the bay to the point of ruin.

But Keiner offers an opposing view in which state officials, scientists, and oystermen created a regulated commons that sustained tidewater communities for decades. Not until the 1980s did a confluence of natural and unnatural disasters weaken the bay’s resilience enough to endanger the oyster resource. Keiner examines conflicts that pitted scientists in favor of privatization against watermen who used their power in the statehouse to stave off the forces of rural change. Her study breaks new ground regarding the evolution of environmental politics at the state rather than the federal level.

The Oyster Question concludes with the impassioned ongoing debate over introducing nonnative oysters to the Chesapeake Bay and how that proposal might affect the struggling watermen and their identity as the last hunter-gatherers of the industrialized world.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential read for those concerned with the Maryland oyster's future
This book reads much like a doctoral dissertation, but it is an essential read for those of us concerned about the oyster's future in Maryland waters, and Dr. Keiner has written it well. The book includes well over 100 pages of notes/references which itself is an important contribution. If I had been the dissertation director for a project of this kind, I would have asked that discussions with watermen on various aspects of oyster history be included and referenced, but I can think of no other additions that I would have made. There are a few editing and proofing issues, but they're not particularly distracting.

The book provides important background for legislators as well as watermen, and I was surprised to find that the one Maryland DNR representative I spoke with yesterday at the public comment session on the Governor's oyster plan did not know of it. This is a particularly important moment in time for the Maryland oyster, so the book is timely. To those who have vested interest in the future of the oyster and those will vote on this issue in November, I think you should read it. ... Product Description

"Must reading in a city that reinvented itself by seeking itsharbor roots." -- Baltimore Magazine.

"Mr. Horton -- a Baltimore journalist who has developed a devoted but hitherto local following -- ventures into a small, distinguished circle of nature writers. Fans of Aldo Leopold, John McPhee and Sigurd Olson won't be disappointed. This is not merely a book for those who already know the Chesapeake, although they will be enchanted by Tom Horton's vast knowledge, narrative skills and eye for detail. Like the true bay native he is, Mr. Horton uses the Chesapeake as a limitless resource from which to harvest a great bounty of observations about politics, nature, and human beings." -- New York Times Book Review.

"Sailing down the Chesapeake in this book is bracing, for Horton is knowledgeable, thoughtful, full of wonder about the natural world and outspoken... As Smith Islanders might say, it's a `right smart' book." -- Washington Post.

Customer Reviews (1)

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving, rounded, view of a complex ecological issue
"Bay Country" does justice to the many legitimate claims on the Chesapeake Bay. Horton loves the bay, its grasses, oysters, crabs, and rockfish; the watermen who live off it and exploit it, and the ways of lifeand physical artifacts -- bridges, old roads, cabins -- people have builtaround it. He also knows its lovers, including him, are killing it. Heportrays the bay and its life, its tributaries(including a wonderful esseyon how hard it is to wring every last pollutant from sewer water) thewatermen, their traditional (and tight) communities, and the hard life theymake from its resources. He has chapters on wind and energy use by peopleand animals. Horton poetically evokes the bay's charms, in a book that ispart nature writing, part sociology, part ecological economy, and part agloss on Pogo's famous remark, "We have met the enemy and he isus." Not a particularly hopeful book, but a very realistic one, fairto all sides and to the glorious bay itself. ... Read more
