Excerpt: Crisfield, Maryland -The Pocomoke and Annemessex Indian tribes of the Algonquin Nation were the first inhabitants of the area now known as Crisfield. At the time, it was a small fishing village known as Annemessex. In 1666, a 300-acre (1.21 km) parcel of land was granted to English settler, Benjamin Summers. Summers named the land that was granted to him Somers Cove. Somers Cove, located at the mouth of the Annemessex River and flanked by the Tangier Sound, soon became a major distribution center for seafood along the East Coast. Somers Cove grew faster than many other settlements on the Delmarva Peninsula, with over 100 buildings in 1804 before Princess Anne and Salisbury, with 40 and 4 respectively. It was only later discovered how lucrative the area was, as a survey of the Chesapeake Bay in 1854 showed how much the waters around Somers Cove were colonized by oysters. In 1866, John W. Crisfield, a Princess Anne attorney, was instrumental in bringing the Eastern Shore Railroad, a branch of the Pennsylvania Railroad system, to the Somers Cove seaport. The town was then renamed Crisfield honoring the attorney's efforts, which proved to bolster the economy of the town. Due to the railroad, Crisfield prospered greatly, as did other towns along its route, such as Marion Station to the north. Seafood was soon being shipped all over the United States, and Crisfield became known as the "Seafood Capital of the World", a nickname still carried by the city. Maryland's colonial history is well-known by history students, but what happened in that tiny state afterward is just as important. And this slim volume will tell you about it.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Maryland" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "History" section is especially good and is very inclusive.
