4-0 out of 5 stars space is political
Space is political. The geographical world in which we live is created by numerous forces. From the French and American revolutions to the recent `anti-globalization' movement, numerous social movements shaped cities, nations, regions and the world. Social movements are among the strongest forces that modified the geography of this planet. However, few geographers took them as a legitimate object of studies. Most of the time, social movements were seen by geographers as the Marxian antithesis of oppression or as a mean of communication for new values and identities which themselves are the focal points for researches. In his book, Geography and Social Movement, Byron Miller intended to bridge this gap in our discipline. At the same time he brings to the studies of social movements some concepts developed by geographers and also introduce in our discipline ideas developed by sociologists and political scientists on social movements. The task of introducing new concepts in a discipline is an complex one; the task of integrating different academic tradition is probably even more difficult. It is by the study of the antinuclear activism in the Boston area that Miller tried to accomplish those tasks. Some antinuclear groups in three municipalities, Lexington, Waltham and Cambridge were studied as well as their socio-political and institutional environment. Although sharing some similarities those three municipalities also present different characteristics that affected the strategies and successes of the antinuclear groups. This suggest that social movements cannot be isolated from their environments; social movement should be situated in space and time. Or as, Miller himself puts it: "Social movement mobilization is geographically constituted at a variety of scales, operates in place-specific contexts, draws on place-based and place-structured identities, and employs spatial strategies" (p. 24). If geography is a structuring element of social movements, it is also subject to contestation. Place, space and scale are seen by many geographers as being socially constructed. Even if not adding much to the understanding of this process, Miller however argue that geography by itself is an object of struggle; "[...] Social movements frequently struggle over the construction of geographies."(p. xii). Many space constructivist geographers worked on different social movements (e.g. Herod 1995,1997; Smith 1993) but often ignored the researches done by other social movements scholars. Seeing space as a social construction could help to understand how social movements work. Space can therefore be seen as both an arena for political debate but also as part of the debates. However, Miller did not went very far in this direction; his originality was simply to link explicitly those geographical concepts with social movements studies concepts. Doing that he did more than linking traditions; he pointed out some of the gaps in social movements studies that geographers could fill. Drawing on the "opportunity structure" school of thought in social movement studies where the development of social movements are explained by their opportunities and constraints, he analysed how this socio-political and institutional environment shaped the antinuclear peace movement in each municipality. Even if military defence matters in the United States belong to national scale politics, Miller found that the anti-nuclear movement in the Boston area aimed its actions at the local states rather than the national state. The relatively more opened opportunity structure at the local state resulted in locally oriented mobilization and political action. This geographical interpretation of the "opportunity structure" is probably the major contribution of Miller. However, his exploratory bridges built between different academic discipline might inspire several geographers to look at the work done in social movement studies and several other social science scholars and students to consider spatial and scalar constituent of social movements. After all, space is political and politic is spatial. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fills a real void
If you're a native of this state, this book would be fantastic as a coffee table book, or as part of a library's reference collection. At more than 150 oversized pages, replete with full-color illustrations, it contains vastly more information than one might anticipate. But this doesn't mean the book is confusing -- far from it.

This atlas is organized into two primary sections.First, there is "The Historical Landscape," which focuses mainly upon more hard-nosed ways of viewing the human experience.By this I mean that it deals with political and economic power, and how they were manifested, both in the colonial period and as part of the United States.I hasten to add that this section starts out with a terrific set of maps about the native American presence in Massachusetts, prior to Verrazano, and prior to the Pilgrims.Maps show specifically where the most ancient native settlements were located, shortly after the Ice Age.Moving forward, they help us see how local tribal groups divided up the state territory; they show locations of native villages and footpaths; and detail interactions between tribes and early traders and explorers. The rest of this section breaks up the colonial period via a variety of helpful, cartographic means, such as the spread of towns across the state, and depictions of colonial Boston in various stages.Next, it deals with Massachusetts after the industrial and American revolutions.Demographic trends are helpfully depicted pictorially, such as Boston's burgeoning growth over the decades; the spread of railroads; and the growing number of wage-earners statewide.

The second section of this useful tome tends more toward the "soft sciences," although it is somewhat equivocally entitled "The Political and Social Landscape."This part of the atlas includes chapters giving cartographic presentations of "Women and Society," "Ethnicity and Race," "Health and the Social Order," and "Architecture and the Built Environment."Subsequent chapters in this section focus on technological developments, such as communications, transportation, and energy, and how these issues have affected Massachusetts demographics. The book ends with an interesting little chapter on the Quabbin Reservoir, and its environmental and social impact.

Don't miss the terrific bibliography, in the section near the end called "Sources."There is a helpful statistical appendix also, giving various figures for each town, going up to 1995.The 1995 figures were projected (this book came out in 1991).

One of my personal favorite maps in this book is on page 5, where the authors helpfully present a breakdown of the origins of Massachusetts town names. We see that most are named after English towns, while quite a few take their names from early Puritan or American settlers.Native American place names are fairly well represented in town names (Mattapoisett, Seekonk, Agawam, Scituate, etc.) as, of course, in the name of our state.

This book is not only useful, it's also fascinating and fun.I'd recommend it to anyone...I've reviewed a lot of books on Amazon.com, and because I usually review what I like, I tend to give a lot of stars. This one makes me wish I was more cautious in my awarding of stars, so my five star ranking of this great book would mean more. ... Excerpt: Massachusetts, the 7th smallest state in the United States, is bordered on the north by New Hampshire and Vermont, on the west by New York, on the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island, and on the south and east by the Atlantic Ocean. It is at the center of the New England region and is the most populous New England state. Massachusetts is called "the Bay State" because of several large bays, which distinctly shape its coast: Massachusetts Bay and Cape Cod Bay, to the east, and Buzzards Bay, to the south. A few cities and towns on the MassachusettsRhode Island border are adjacent to Narragansett Bay. At the southeastern corner of the state is a large, sandy, arm-shaped peninsula, Cape Cod. The islands Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket lie south of Cape Cod, across Nantucket Sound. Boston is the largest city, at the inmost point of Massachusetts Bay, the mouth of the Charles River, the longest river entirely within Massachusetts. Most Bay Staters live in the Boston area, which cover most of eastern Massachusetts. Eastern Massachusetts is fairly densely populated and mostly suburban. Western Massachusetts is more rural and sparsely populated, especially in the Berkshires, the branch of the Appalachian Mountains that dominates the western quarter of the state. The most populous part of western Massachusetts is the Pioneer Valley, straddling the Connecticut River, which flows across Western Massachusetts from north to south. Massachusetts has 351 cities and towns. Every part of the state is within an incorporated city or town, but many t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3533063 ... Read more
