5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter the math-o-phobe
Direct quotes from my daughter who used to proclaim her hatred and fear of math:
"Oh! This is even better than 'I Hate Math'!" she says. "I can't stop reading! I just have to solve this problem!"

5-0 out of 5 stars smarty + pants = fun
I got this book somewhere in my grade school days.I loved every bit of it to death. The illustrations are cute and funny. The longer story problems are challenging and fun.The book is broken into sections related to some sort of math topic, and the ideas addressed in each section vary enough that you aren't reading and practicing the same old thing.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a boost in math.I was a poor math student, and this book re-instilled my faith in myself on the subject. It also might be helpful to teachers who need extra activities for students who get through their homework quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Math for Smarty Pants AND Parents
It's important to note that this book is "written and designed for kids and grownups together."It isn't a book to simply thrust into the hands of a child and leave her to her own devices, no matter how much of a "smarty pants" she is.On the contrary, it is to be read and enjoyed together.Older children may successfully make their way through it alone, but with all of the opportunities for interaction and discussion that ... Smarty Pants presents (i.e., Math for two, What is a Paradox?), why would you want to miss the chance? Advance concepts are explained in concrete terms, and practical challenges abound; and the well-drawn pen-and-ink illustrations enhance and clarify the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun for my "smarty pants"
My 10-year-old son is definately a math "smarty pants" and when this book arrived I just left it sitting around to see if he would "discover" it and and boy did he!It's full of fun math games and activities and he dove into it for hours; not bad for a lazy summer day activity.I highly recommend it for your "smarty pants" or even your not-so-smarty-pants if he or she is willing to play in the realm of numbers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Content BUT
This book contains a number of engaging math and logic problems, something that we do a lot of.Unfortunately, the print is small, the pages are quite crowded and answers are often extremely hard to find, all of which really limits the book's usefulness both in our math program and as a "just for fun" book. ... Free preview is not helpful at all. Publisher should allow more pages for preview if he is really interested in selling this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Starter Book
This a great book for a child starting out learning some basic concepts of math formulas, it uses alot of visual's instead of numbers to teach some concepts, I would recommend for the young ones learning addition and subtraction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Math + Magic = A Waste of Money
This book promises a lot but delivers very little. The guy who originally sold them was a great salesman, Scott even got on Opera once. But after buying the book I don't see why. Very little ofit was interesting or of value. However the books are poorly laid out, poorly explained and even worse are the illustrations. I bought them with high hopes to help my child with math. We tossed them aside after one quick read. If you need to learn or teach math get a Spectrum Book. These were nothing more then a waste of money. I always look and find something good about everyone and everything. I found a great use for these books. Not only do the pages line the bottom of a bird cage nicely, they also make great fire starters. Don't waste your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good math ideas, but should be a workbook
There's honestly nothing wrong with this book. A lot of reviewers have used it and found it helpful for their children. My problem is that it's written for children, but it's in an adult format, meaning it's in a hard bound book measuring about 5" by 8" and written in a fairly small type.My 6 year old would have trouble reading "Harry Potter" by herself, she'd have a hard time reading this one too.The writing is at about the same level. And yet the book starts out with kindergarten and 1st grade level work. The book is written in a way that you could read the games and stories to your kindergarten aged child, but the presentation isn't kindergarten level, it's more 2nd grade level.

I wish the book was in a workbook form, with a lot of child-friendly illustrations and places to write.Instead you either have to have your child write in pencil and erase, or photocopy each exercise to keep the book clean. It isn't just that I'm a clean freak, writing in a book this thick isn't easy, especially for a 6 year old.

In the end the math concepts, games and fun drawings could draw children in and get them excited about math, but the book form and presentation could be much more child friendly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making numbers make sense!
Mr.Flansburg's methods of stressing basic math skills are new and important before algebra or higher math will make sense. His new web site thehumancalculator.com also offers more information about his goal to wipe out innumeracy. He taught me it's never to late to conquer math phobia and fulfill my career goals that never materialized because of math avoidance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant practice for "thinking" problems
You can teach your child to add and subtract, multiply and divide without workbooks. But the schools now insist on what they call "thinking" problems. These types of problems ususally are justconfusing to kids because they are hard to understand. But the problems inthis book really do stimulate thinking and they also offer the"confusion" factor that comes in trying to figure out what theywant. Hey, we are stuck with these types of problems in the schools, whether you like them or not. This book has excellant problems and theyhave the answers in the back of the book. My daughter is 8 years old andshe has found this a challenge. You still need to drill your child in thebasic math facts, and this book does not do that, but you don't need a bookfor that. You do need a workbook of "thinking" problems. I thinkthe teachers' colleges have lost their minds. This whole approach isflawed, but this workbook will help you teach your child how to cope withthis goofy stuff. I highly recommend this book. And, wow, it's cheap! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very good book to have fun
This book is upto my expecations. There are very good math puzzles, both educational and entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good problems for fourth and fifth graders
I recently purchased this book for my children in third and fourth grade and I am glad that I did. The puzzles really challenge them, although some are a bit more than they can handle. While the solutions are given in the book, they are not allowed to look at them until I am completely convinced that they will not get the answer. However, I do give them plenty of clues before that option is exercised.
Some of the problems are classics, for example selecting socks until you have a matching pair and drawing figures without lifting a pencil are problems that I did in grade school many years ago. My favorite problem in this book is the one that is illustrative of the growth of powers. It involves a million sugar cubes each a half inch in width. Making a cube out of them would create a cube approximately four feet wide, a rectangle would cover a tennis court but a stack would be higher than Everest. Since the first involves the cube root of a million and the second the square root, this demonstrates the significance of squares and cubes in a unique and educational way.
This book is an excellent source of mathematical puzzles for students at the level of fourth or fifth grade. While none of them is really new, they are well-suited for children of that age and all three of mine enjoy them greatly, although they do get frustrated.

WITH ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN AGED 5 TO 13

'Helping Your Child Learn math' is one in a series of books on different education topics intended to help you make the most of your child's natural curiosity. Teaching and learning are not mysteries that can only happen in school. They also happen when parents and children do simple things together.

For instance, you and your child can: sort socks on laundry day

-- sorting is a major function in math and science; cook a meal together -- cooking involves not only math and science but good health as well; tell and read each other stories -- storytelling is the basis for reading and writing (and a story about the past is also history); or play a game of hopscotch together -- playing physical games will help your child learn to count and start on a road to lifelong fitness.

By doing things together, you will show that learning is fun and important. You will be encouraging your child to study, learn, and stay in school.

This book will give you a short rundown on facts, but the biggest part of the book is made up of simple, fun activities for you and your child to do together. Your child may even beg you to do them.

"The first teachers are the parents, both by example and conversation. But don't think of it as teaching. Think of it as fun."

So, let's get started. I invite you to find an activity in this book and try it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Times Tables made easy and fun!
A durable bookmark "Answer Decoder" is included and comes attached with a red ribbon. You place it over a panel of numbers so that the colored edges match the color bands on the page. The products of the times table will then appear in the windows. So on page 15, you will see (4 x 1 = 4 1 5) When you place the decoder on the page the answer (4) is in the window.

On some of the pages, there is a folded edge which hides the "product." On the outside of the folded edge you will find objects which equal the "product." On the inside, you will find the answer in numbers.

This book will succeed in making the learning and practice of multiplication fun. When children understand what happens to the numbers when they are multiplied, it encourages children to "learn" the times tables rather than simply memorizing them.

The numbers and pictures are bright and colorful. Pictures of paint brushes, drums, dogs, cats, crayons, umbrellas, balloons, shoes, blocks, bugs, chess pieces,. bowling pins, beads and soccer balls make this book a treat.

A "Multiplication Square" and a "Times Table Wheel" are also included. For even more fun, look for the "Double Dice" game on the inside front cover. You will need some real dice which are not included. Children will be able to test their times-table skills in the game. Then, they can solve picture puzzles and calculator challenges.

Yes, multiplication can be fun. I wish my mom had purchased this book for me as a child, but it wasn't published until 1996. Don't miss out on this great book for your child! Your children will use their knowledge of times tables during their whole life! What a great start to a bright future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for math teachers.
This book is a good resource to have kids practice and drill math concepts. It contains both new games and also variations of known games like domino, bingo, tic-tac-toe but always using a spinner with numbers as the basic tool. There are several concepts that can be practiced like whole number operations, geometry, probability, measurement, fractions and some more. Some of the activities include critical thinking skills like having the kids write their own story problems to a given answer. Other activities are easier like just having the kids make operations with the mathematical symbols included in the spinner.

Although there is a wide variety of games, I think it eventually tends to be boring for the kids if you use it a lot, because it always deals with a spinner. I recommend better, the book "25 super cool math board games", because it reinforces the same concepts but with a larger variety of games.
