This book covers the essential topics for a second-level course in strength of materials or mechanics of materials, with an emphasis on techniques that are useful for mechanical design. Design typically involves an initial conceptual stage during which many options are considered.  At this stage, quick approximate analytical methods are crucial in determining which of the initial proposals are feasible. The ideal would be to get within 30% with a few lines of calculation. The designer also needs to develop experience as to the kinds of features in the geometry or the loading that are most likely to lead to critical conditions.

 

With this in mind, the author tries wherever possible to give a physical and even an intuitive interpretation to the problems under investigation. For example, students are encouraged to estimate the location of weak and strong bending axes and the resulting neutral axis of bending before performing calculations, and the author discusses ways of getting good accuracy with a simple one degree of freedom Rayleigh-Ritz approximation. Students are also encouraged to develop a feeling for structural deformation by performing simple experiments in their outside environment, such as estimating the radius to which an initially straight bar can be bent without producing permanent deformation, or convincing themselves of the dramatic difference between torsional and bending stiffness for a thin-walled open beam section by trying to bend and then twist a structural steel beam by hand-applied loads at one end.

 

In choosing dimensions for mechanical components, designers will expect to be guided by criteria of minimum weight, which with elementary calculations, generally leads to a thin-walled structure as an optimal solution. This consideration motivates the emphasis on thin-walled structures, but also demands that students be introduced to the limits imposed by structural instability. Emphasis is also placed on the effect of manufacturing errors on such highly-designed structures - for example, the effect of load misalignment on a beam with a large ratio between principal stiffness  and the large magnification of initial alignment or loading errors in a strut below, but not too far below the buckling load.

Absolutely, positively do not buy this book if you need the Standard US edition with both standard and metric units.

I have bought a few of the SI unit books before.For example my overseas physics book is 100% identical to the $200 version that's sold in my bookstore.

Let me begin to explain the frustrations that I have with this translation.
There are several instances where the translator forgets to convert units.In several of the example problems.I often find random numbers that are printed in standard units, when they should be in metric units.There are also several cases where I have found that the numbers are wrong.When I will compare the numbers in a problem 7.47 for example, it gives 200mm when it should be 100mm.When in the standard edition the units are completely correct.

Only consider buying this book if your class will be giving you problems that are only in SI Units.But even then, watch out because there are many more errors in the SI edition than in the standard ... Read more

The technical content of this classic book is great, but the paper quality is absolutely horrible. The material (whatever it is) is almost toxic, as it leaves off a dusty residue that makes breathing difficult.
If you care about your health, do NOT buy this book. I'm surprised it didn't come with a warning label, as in: "Prolonged reading may cause Respiratory Complications, etc."
Finally, the book came in softcover, instead of the advertised hardcover.

This book is, next to Timoshenko's works, a reference in the structural mechanics field. It's extensive and it offers a mathematically rigorous explanation of the fundamental models used to describe the behaviour of materials submitted to actions in such a way that the learning curve can be easily accompanied. All in all a great book which is a must in any structural engineer's bookshelf.

I am a Phd student and have studied three diferrent major text books for Strength of materials. In my opinion, this is the best classic text book out there. Organized concepts, illustrated in details, with lots of theoretical and practical applications. This is the book that most of today's mechanical engineering professors used to read during their time, and it is still of great use. I would highly recommend this bible of mechanics of materials for those who love to UNDERSTAND it.

This book is just bad.Like calculus, statics is one of the most crucial courses for an engineering student and if you don't truly learn the material, the road ahead will be tough.This book will not help you.There are three aspects to this book: informational material (5%), example problems (45%), end of section problems (50%).It can feel like some of the sections with informational material, can fit on an index card.

The author has taken the approach of "Learning by doing" and as such, there are loads of example problems.Some sections talk about a given principle for less than half a page and then have 6+ pages of example problems.This would be an excellent thing, however the explanations on the applicaton of the principles in an example is curt and almost always a re-hash of the already very brief paragraphs in the "informational" section.This leads you to spend most of your time just trying to follow the logic (which isn't explained) in the example problem at which point your statics class becomes more of a self-taught experience.

Stephen B. Doty is a Senior Scientist at Hospital for Special Surgery, New York, New York and Adjunct Professor, School of Dental and Oral Surgery, Columbia University, New York, NY. He has over 100 publications in the field of anatomy, developmental biology, and the physiology of skeletal and connective tissues. His honors include several commendations for participation in the Russian/NASA spaceflights, the Spacelab Life Science NASA spaceflights, and numerous Shuttle missions that studied the influence of spaceflight on skeletal physiology. This textbook on advanced stress and strain analysis has the potential to become a good teaching tool and reference.Unfortunately, the first edition does not appear to have been edited before publication and isreplete with typographical errors and incorrect formulae. Some of thefigures have been (re-?)drawn incorrectly. Several of the (typed) answersin the Solutions Manual are wrong.In addition, the author makes a numberof key assumptions which are unstated.

It's rare that I am happy about the textbook I assign for classes; many texts cover the wrong material, have significant holes, or are difficult for students to follow. I had used Miller's lecture notes a number of years ago as an undergrad, so I was excited when this book was published in time for the Applied QM class I started teaching last fall. The only downside I can see is that I often find it hard to improve upon the book's explanations; I sometimes feel as though I have very little to add.

My major is physics, and i bought this book for self-learning. The book is clear and requires less background knowledge, 2 years of basic college math and physics are enough. The book was well written with good explainations. Specialy with appendices can help you know what physics, math background you need for the subject.

As a physicist, I bought this book more for curiosity than to study itself. And I must confess I was really surprised by the conciseness of the text. It is a really nice and good introductory book. It doesn't go into the details and math formalism, but it does provide a nice physical insight, as well as good explanations. I recommend this book if you are looking for an introductory quantum mechanics text.

I am teaching myself quantum mechanics with the goal of understanding original research articles.I have found Miller to be extraordinarily well written and suitable for self-study. As an overall introduction to QM for self-study, I think Miller would be hard to beat, providing a nice balance between physical applications and mathematics. (For those sensitive to the physical quality of a book, Miller is very nicely produced and easy on aging eyes.)

Many textbooks, in general, suffer in readability due to the author assuming the reader thinks just as he or she does, or knows a sufficient amount of information prior to reading. David Miller is one of those authors that is just the opposite: he never assumes you know anything that isn't in his book (other than that you know how to read and do basic math). In addition, Miller has the unique ability to relate complex and complicated concepts to common examples. You will find that reading through this text is much smoother than with other textbooks. There are also solutions to certain problems and viewgraphs available for free online.

The topics in the book cover the basic quantum mechanical scenarios, such as simple 1D/3D potentials, operators, the uncertainty principle (taught in two ways...Griffiths provides a third), matrix formalism, Dirac notation, angular momentum, spin, and the Hydrogen atom. In addition, more advanced topics, such as perturbation theory (time independent and dependent), the density matrix, and approximation techniques. Miller also relates much of the material to photonics topics, such as absorption, Fermi's Golden Rule, non-linear effects, refractive index, and much more. As an EE professor, he also covers some band theory of crystalline solids.

I feel that this book is extremely complete and will be extremely useful for anyone wanting to learn Quantum Mechanics. I've also used Griffiths and Singh, which are also excellent texts. I feel that Griffiths accompanies this text very well (so having both is more than complete). I have yet to find an error in the text, and this is most likely because Miller wrote this originally as a course reader that was published through Stanford. The course reader has been used by other professors and hundreds of student prior to publishing. This means that your learning won't be plagued or interrupted with errors, or with the need to purchase a new edition. ... Read more
