5-0 out of 5 stars Microbiology:Abreeze
Even before I began this course I was terrified.Just the word "Microbiology" terrified me.This textbook is wonderful. It is easy to understand and it makes the course material fun to learn.I would definitely recommend this textbook for any beginning Microbiology course.

1-0 out of 5 stars A huge disappointment
This book is nearly worthless. Large parts of it are just lists of organisms and there are frequent grammatical errors, typos, misspellings. It's clear it was written in a rush. The blurb on the back says "lavishly illustrated" which is a lie. All the illustrations, of which there are few, are not even B&W photos but line drawings, and not even very good ones at that. For example, The very first two, meant to illustrate two different organisms, are hard to tell apart. Save your money and buy something else.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not enough detail
I bought this book to help with a Microbiology class I need for nursing. Some of the more important things we are doing in lab (staining and cultures) have little detail or are not mentioned at all.For example, they mention MacConkey agar but not the others that we are being tested on.Chemical metabolism has some details, but not enough about ATP production. This book has helped clarify some things, but I have not been able to use it to the extent that I would have hoped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Second Degree
I'm going back for a second degree after 21 years. This book is very easy to understand and will make my class a lot easier and enjoyable.Great seller, quick shipping.I would highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not comprehensive enough for science major

3-0 out of 5 stars Foundations in Microbiology Basic Principles 7th Ed. International Student Edition
My rating of the item is specifically for the item. The seller was great. The International edition is a good book for my class but being that I thought it was the same as the original hardbound book, I was disappointed. The International Student Edition is missing 10 full chapters from the original, giving it only 17 Chapters rather than the full 27.Still a good book.

This book is also required by my college for this course. It has some helpful tidbits but after reading 2 other sperate sources to make a "complete" picture you dont have the engery to color the pictures.I honestly think I could have done without this book and saved some money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Learning Resource!

Product Description
Would you like to bring guest lectures like researchers, physicians, or fellow instructors into you microbiology course? With this third edition of INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY you get the perspective of all of those three professionals. John Ingraham, a professor of microbiology at University of California at Davis, and Catherine Ingraham, his daughter and a practicing physician, utilize their experience within a case history approach complemented by a great technology package. Each chapter in INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY now consistently begins with a case history, which John Ingraham has found very motivatonal to students who are new to the study ofbasic science. Because Catherine Ingraham studied to become a physician by interviewing patients, determining causes and implementing solutions, she knows mastry comes from high interest human stories rather than clinical presentations. Many of the case histories found in this book are taken from Catherine's experience as a physician. This combination of experiences and talent brings a case-based quality to every lecture and homework session. This unique author team also provides up-to-the-minute currency. Coverage of new microbial "events" such as biological warfare, studied by John and its effects prepared for in Catherine's office, keeps students interested. The authors also highlight reemerging diseases, such as tuberculoses and smallpox. As with previous editions, this book takes a "body systems" organization. Students are exposed to the unknown, the world of the microbes, through the known, and the different parts of their own bodies. And, because art is so important, there is again a multimedia manager with this title, but with more exciting capabilities than ever before. Instructors receive powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations, tables and figures from the text, plus several animations are at your fingertips. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars CD Animations Not Available to Students!!
The content of this book is acceptable and the photos and tables are helpful. But the book indicates that the CD included with the book includes animations of the subject matter.Throughout the book, it encourages you to go to the cd and view the animations. What it does not tell you is that the animations are only available to instructors. It took me six contacts with the book publisher, and lengthy conversations with five uninformed representatives, to find out that I could not get the cd animations.VERY DISAPPOINTING INDEED!I have purchased many science texts that come with animations on cd and it is available to anyone who purchases the book. Why bother to include a cd with the book. The cd that comes with this text is absolutely empty. It only contains a link to the book's website.

Just know that if you purchase this book, the cd is useless to students.

5-0 out of 5 stars informative
I had to read the entire book. It wasn't difficult. Not a reference book, but a good introduction

5-0 out of 5 stars great intro book
I got this book with a Medical Micro book for a class. While the approach of this book is occasionally juvenal (I don't need a little story about a boy getting a puncture wound to explain the immune response), it has been a good fall-back reference as the material is organized differently from the other text.

3-0 out of 5 stars A teacher's perspective
The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters. The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
Overall, a comprehensive textbook, but lacking the focus and layout for easy adoption and study.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is designed primarily as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate courses in Medical, Public Health and Veterinary Entomology. Its uniqueness is that its emphasis is on disease as opposed to arthropods. It includes general discussions of epidemiology, transmission, disease control, vector control and disease surveillance. In addition, it contains chapters oriented towards the many specific arthropod-borne diseases. Furthermore, the book discusses the many direct impacts that parasitic insects have on human and animal health. The arthropods themselves are dealt with in two introductory chapters.

Apart from (post)graduate students, healthcare professionals in the field of arthropod-borne infectious diseases as well as entomologists interested in understanding the medical relevance of the species they study will find this book an extensive and useful guide to further their insights. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Medical Entomology Review
I found this book useful. It contains a lot of information on arthropods of medical importance and is detailed on each aspect. It is divided into sizeable sections relating to e.g. specific diseases and I found it a bit wordy and took a little time to negotiate to the information I required. It contains some good diagrams and references to other sources.

4-0 out of 5 stars A readable textbook
One of the better text books I have seen- it does not put me to sleep, and is informative.
The book is organized by arbopathogen rather than vector. It does focus on the vectorial aspects of disease transmission and pathogen life cycle. The writing is not so clinical that non-physicians can't understand what is being discussed. All in all, this is a good book to add to a personal research library. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
The text in this book is fantastic, very clear and concise - easy for a student (like me) to read on their own and get a very clear understanding of.The book covers everything from the discovery of microorganisms to viruses, bacteria, protazoa, prions and the chemistry in cellular metabolism.
Chapter listing:

Diagnosing Infectious Diseases
Pathogens of Infectious Diseases
Nonspecific Host Defense Mechanisms
Specific Host Defense Mechanisms: An Introduction to Immunology
Major Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Diseases of Humans

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful.I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great transaction.
The book came in perfect condition wrapped in plastic and in a box with styrofoam fillers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Skimpy on highlighting essential topics. Generous on graphic illustration
After progressing in reading, the reader will get used to the generosity of the authors in their constant, yet might be odd, attempts to illustrate the subject matter, specially, the extended review summaries at the end of the book. The book strength lies in standardizing the review methods of classification of microorganism, of drug stacks used in treatment, and of microscopic and culture morphology.

Despite the reasonable flow of thoughts in the paragraphs of each subject, the book lacks highlighting of names of diseases, organisms, and methods that are left hidden in the maze of words. Thus, the student reader has to struggle with underlining and highlighting the dense text. For example, a long paragraph on selective, bacterial culture media contains five media names typed as plain text. That would require thorough re-reading, while reviewing, in order to memorize the five media. Thus, the authors abandoned the very premise of the book, which is "to review", and left the reader with the burden of searching while reviewing.

The book lacks of adequate footnotes or paragraph notes in visible locations. As such, the book paragraphs are plain, dense, and burdensome. Though there are plenty of boxed highlighted concepts, and even funny cartoons, it appears that the authors dismissed the busy and somber mood of busy lifestyle of students and rather tended to the relaxed style of casual readers.

Although most of the graphic illustrations are useful and neat, there is a sense of naivety in making trivial illustrations that serve no higher cause than the obvious. For example, on modes of virus transmission, a figure shows placental, birth canal, and postpartum images of contact between the agent and fetus/baby. Nothing is gained from such simplistic graphing of the plain and obvious course of action. In displaying the microscopic slides and culture photos, the book wasted more space on the entitling of the medical illustrations than on making the slides and cultures large enough to be legible.

The book ventures into an odd and redundant way of describing bacterial classification using colored pie chart. The frequently repeated colored pie serves very little purpose compared to the space it occupied. Neither the portions of the pie correspond to any numeric value of the bacterial classes they represent, nor do the colors of the pie wedges serve any purpose other than decorating the book page. The same odd style of representation applies to the use of one-column tables that use multiple rows to compare two different types of organisms.

This book is a great review for microbiology on the MCAT.Clear explanations, with pictures and figures, as well as concise chapter summaries make this a helpful book for MCAT prep.I also used the Lippincott Biochem review and thought it was also very useful as a MCAT study aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lab book for microbiology
I found this book to help me a lot for microbiology lab.The pictures are excellent quality and serves as a great reference for the microbiology text.I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide had great questions and answers and helped me pass micro with ease.It showed me what to focus on for class exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market. ... Read more

Product Description

"This small portable review book is a good resource for medical students and residents. It is not overly large, bulky or expensive. The test format of the questions makes a good review. As an individual who teaches and practices medical microbiology, I found the material challenging and the questions well designed to make students think. The answers are also explanatory and enhance the learning/review function by explaining why certain answers were incorrect. Overall, this is a good review book and I would recommend it to students. 3 Stars."--Doody's Review Service

2-0 out of 5 stars Gets it done, but very frustrating
This book is filled with mistakes.I was successful on the NBME Micro/immuno shelf exam, but it was very frustrating. The book leaves a lot of bad explanations just hanging.Pre test is an effective product and I will use them again, but this is the worst one I've used.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good bacteriology section, poor virology section
It was pretty obvious to me that those two sections were written by different people.Bacteriology section explains the correct answer and most of the time also explains why the incorrect answers are incorrect. However, virology section sometimes doesn't even address the correct answer or the incorrect answer. The questions in virology section are not as integrative or patient case oriented as the bacteriology section is.I enjoyed going through the bacteria section while virus section was a waste of time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beware the Pretest
Pretest books are a good review source, but beware that they are not edited well and often will contain wrong answers. This can be very frustrating if you are not confident in your knowledge. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible experience.
Chapter 15 & 16 is entirely ripped out of the book. You think something like that would be on the description.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Slow
I couldn't tell you how this product looks or even if it is what I need because after the maximum date of promised delivery from Amazon, I have still not recieved it.For this product, make sure you order it about a year in advance, just to be on the safe side. Very frustrating.
