Product Description
Medical laboratory workers play a crucial role in the health care system, but are often hidden from public view. Unlike many previous histories of Canadian health care, "Labour in the Laboratory" offers an intimate portrait of the women (and a few men) who laboured at the bench. In a detailed analysis of local hospital records, membership records, newspapers, professional health care journals, and other sources, Peter Twohig shows that the history of health care looks different when seen from the perspective of workers other than physicians or nurses. "Labour in the Laboratory" is also about the ways in which health care work has been organized. Twohig reveals that many health care workers fulfilled multiple challenging traditional ideas of professional boundaries and exclusive control over particular tasks. Using evidence from the Maritime provinces, he challenges assumptions about health care work and hospital development throughout Canada and beyond. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Group Medical Appointments
This is a very useful text directed toward health professionals on the subject of group medical appointments (GMAs).The book provides a nice overview of GMAs but also delivers enough practical information and details for a dedicated reader to establish a GMA system. For example, draft forms, scripts, and protocols are provided. There is a nice Q&A section that answers many of the questions that are likely to arise in the reader's mind.In addition, a glossary and reference section are included. The writing is clear and concepts easy to understand. While the monograph is well referenced and evidence-based, anecdotes from actual practice settings keep the book interesting and also support the real-world effectiveness of this approach to care delivery. In summary, health professionals interested in learning about or implementing a GMA system will find this book to be a terrific reference and a great starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars GMA: to increase efficiency and improve the quality of healthcare.
In the season of healthcare reform, cost is at the center of the discussion. It is clear that no matter what change reform brings, costs must be controlled if we are to provide healthcare for all, . In the process of cost control, we cannot afford to sacrifice quality of care.

DeeAnn Schmucker's book, "Group Medical Appointments: An Introduction for Health Professionals" represents a way to work at the goals of lowering cost and maintaining or improving quality.

Ms. Schmucker outlines the rationale for group medical appointments: more efficient use of medical professionals, patient satisfaction with better access to care, longer and more comprehensive visits and the credibility of patient to patient information-sharing. During the course of a busy day, practicing physicians may welcome the change of pace from the grind of seeing individual patients to a more time-relaxed session inherent in a group appointment.

In short, this book emphasizes the advantages to patients and physicians with group appointments. The advantages to patients and professionals is apparent as one considers that expertise and efficiency that can be brought to a group of patients with a chronic disease. For example, a group of diabetics can meet for an hour with the doctor, physical therapist and dietitian all on attendance.

A final word. Having participated in Ms. Schmucker's seminar, I can attest that she brings enthusiasm, clarity and a sense of humor to these sessions that enable and encourage the medical professional to implement group medical appointments.

Product Description
Medical devices and equipment are a vital component of patient care. From a simple tongue depressor to a sophisticated haemodialysis machine, medical devices are needed at every level of the health service. Yet many health services continue to lack information and financial resources to acquire the devices they really need, i.e. those that will address the specific disease burden in their country. Effective implementation of a National Regulatory Authority is a first step towards the cost-effective management of medical devices that meet international quality and safety standards, throughout their entire life span, from conception to disposal.

This publication offers countries a framework within which they can plan - or improve - their regulatory system for medical devices. Governments are particularly encouraged to take advantage of the extensive work undertaken over the last ten years by national and regional bodies to harmonize regulations on medical devices. Countries can also adopt the device approvals of the advanced regulatory systems. These two approaches alone can enable national health authorities to redirect scarce resources towards locally assessed needs, such as vendor and device registration, training, surveillance and information exchange systems on medical devices in use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Science-Ejected Vitalism, 1998:
Vitalism is a profoundly science-ejected concept, though many CAM or 'natural health' cabals falsely claim that vitalism survives scientific scrutiny.

I quote:

"by the end of the 19th century the concept of the prevailing 'specific vital force' ('vitalism'), thought to be essential for living organisms, lost its popularity [p.262...] it was Wohler, and later Kolbe in 1845 who synthesized acetic acid, who helped banish 'vital force,' or 'vitalism,' from organic chemistry and from science altogether [p.265]."
