Product Description

All the things that men think and feel-but don't dare to talk about-are explored in this book by the best-selling author of Every Man's Battle, Stephen Arterburn. Significance. Fears. Sex. Communication. Relationships. Work. Commitment. Intimacy. Expectations. Control. Failure.

Nothing that drives men, according to a national survey, is left untouched within these pages. But men-and the women who love them-are not left without hope either. For women who long to understand their man better, and for men who aspire to build more successful lives, Arterburn not only delves into their private needs, aspirations, motivations, and frustrations but gives perspective on where those secrets come from and how to respond to them in order to make life and love easier on everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book based on a poorly written survey.
This book is based completely on a survey that is written in such a way to further the authors agenda. While I agree with a lot that the author says, if you really look at the survey of 3600 men you can see that the questions don't measure what a man believes about himself but rather his beliefs about other men.The questions ask if you agree with statements and then uses these findings as a measurement for the premise of the book. The questions say, "Men are uncomfortable with the notion of total committment."This measures what the individual's belief in men's views and not his views of himself.Therefor all men could disagree but because of a stereotype of men mark often.Than this stereotype becomes the premise of the chapter.

Well written but based on a poor survey...

2-0 out of 5 stars A lot of psycho mumbo jumbo
I gave this 2 stars because there were some good ideas in there of things I could discuss with my husband. But the book is full of psychohersey based on humanistic theories and ideas. I read the whole book and then got rid of it. I've been married to my husband for 35 years and most of these "secrets" are things we have discussed many times through the years. Maybe my husband is just more open that other men, but I really didn't get much out it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accountability Partner material
I purchased this book and after a couple of chapter went back and started over, this time taking notes.I then had my wife read it and it helped her to understand better who I am and how she could help me with my walk with Christ and being the man that God wants me to be.I also bought one for my accountability partner and we generated questions we ask each other every week to help each other.Nothing compares to the Holy Word of God, with that said, this is an excellenty written book and although not all of it will apply to you there are many areas it will help you to refocus on the areas you are strong in and avoid the areas in life you are weak. Each chapter has a section titled "New Directions" followed by "New Connections" and these give you ideas to move you closer to the man you are supposed to be.I hate to read and usually listen to audio books while driving, I will read this one again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Marriage destroyer....
Its funny how people use the bible as a weapon against other people. This book and the others written by this author are nothing more than toilet paper packaged in a hardcover. If you hate your marriage now you sure will hate your marriage after reading the junk written by this author.DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK OR ANY OTHER BY THIS AUTHOR!!!!It has been proven already that marriage councilling groups had to be put together across the nation to counter the dribble written by this author who obviously does his best to destroy a marriage.Women that read this book will ALWAYS look upon thier husbands with suspicion and ask the same aggravating and stupid questions over and over again.

READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!

TRASH ALERT!!!!

If there is a place in HELL for this author I hope its as hot as the devils rear end!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Real eye opener for me!
I can only say that this book really opened my eyes to the things that men worry about, think about, and struggle with. The chapter on Respect (what men equate to love) was worth the price of the book!I highly recommend the book to anyone caught in the cycle of "if he would love me, I'd respect him" and "if she respected me, I would love her".It challenges the reader (be it man or woman) to go ahead and make the first move toward restoring the relationship.Plus a ton of other goodies by way of information from a man's mind. ... Product Description

What does society want of teen guys? To be independent, tough, and macho? To be a sensitive, caring metrosexual? To excel in school and sports and business? The challenges are many, and we haven't even mentioned the most important--and most frightening--topic of conversation: girls. The road to manhood is a perilous one.

Guys need a guidebook, one that asks and answers the questions they're reluctant to bring up. A book that addresses the myths of manhood with a straightforward approach teenage guys will appreciate and absorb. A book that understands what many fail to realize--that somewhere between the awkwardness and braggadocio, the goofiness and the developing body, there is a real person struggling to make his mark on the world. 5-0 out of 5 stars Would Highly Recommend
Jason Boyett hit the nail on the head with this book. The book is specifically designed for teen guys and helping them through all the difficulties they deal with in adolescence.Jason tackles girls, parents, God, purity, and more in the book. The book also offers practical insights into how to shave, tie and necktie, and more on the practical side of growing up.His insights into the spiritual, emotional, and physical life of the teen guy are incredible.I would strongly recommend this book to any of my students or their parents to read through.
Jason writes in a humorous easy-going way that keeps you engrossed in the book.It reads more like a novel than a textbook. If you have a teen guy in your house or know one, you need to buy them this book.
Also, I'm supposed to let you know that I was given a free review copy of the book, but that has nothing to do with whether or not I liked it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guy's Guide to Life
A Guy's Guide to Life -How to become a man in 224 pages or less by Jason Boyett is a wonderful resource for teen guys and the people that love them.

With chapters on subjects such as peer pressure, health & exercise, friends, family, sex and even women there's enough here to guarantee that your young man will grow up right.

I quickly flipped to the chapter on women and let me tell you, Jason is right on the money with this one. He's got it 100% correct.

This would be a good book for a father-son study or even for a guys Sunday school class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for Teenage guys!!
This book is targeted to teenage boys and is crammed with humorous, sound and godly advice to prepare today's boys for manhood.Using a three-fold approach, Boyett covers the mind, body and spirit. With chapters on communication, sex, grooming, faith, exercise, family, friends and being a gentleman, there is sure to be an area of interest to any boy who picks up this book!
The book was fast-paced and easy to read, great for teenage boys who may not even like to read.Boyett uses modern-day language, straight talk and humor to capture your attention.I liked the sidebars in the book. They are quick little bites of info that sum up the important messages in that chapter. His style of writing is perfect for today's teens. The Biblical basis for the content of the book is presented in a down-to-earth tone, not preachy in the least. It would appeal to both Christians and non-Christians.I loved the book and plan on using it in my homeschool curriculum next year for my own son's reading program!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I am a youth pastor and I use this book for one on one discipleship with boys. It is great, the boys love it b/c it is straight forward and easy to read. It covers a lot of touchy issues so I would recommend parents checking it out first.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guys Guide to Life - In 208 pages or less
Fun book for my son to read.I started the ball rolling by reading the first couple of pages out loud (which at the age of 14 he was trying hard NOT to listen) but it caught his attention. It has a fun way of explaining things and because it is a fun read - it helped me to open the door of communication about things that boys wouldn't necessarily want to readily talk about. ... I purchased the book entitled, "Effective Men's Ministry" and I can say that it is THE Bible of Men's Ministry. I completed the book in 48 hours and have recommended it to several men's ministries at several of our churches so there should be a slight increase in sales of the book. I have let it be known that with reference to the dynamics of men's ministry this book is THE definitive authority and is REQUIRED reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars What does God have to say?
I have no idea what's up with the other reviewers. I agree that some of the other books in the Every Man's series are a bit over done, slightly jaded, and too explicit in some cases. HOWEVER, this is not the case with this book. Please go read the table of contents found above under the "search inside" link. The ENTIRE book covers those topics by providing PURE SCRIPTURE again and again and again. Besides the very few excerpts from Every Young Man's battle, the entire book is quite simply a collection of what God says on the subject. And THAT is more encouraging then any authors words could ever be. So instead of searching the Bible yourself, it's all summed up here. And then when you do your regular Bible reading, if you happen to come across one of the many verses in the book (which you will) a smile will come across your face as your knowledge of scripture gets deeper and deeper. This is espsecially useful for those who are just getting into the Bible (or want to get into the Bible).

If you're looking for a book that is more a book rather then a collection of awe inspiring scripture, Joshua Harris's book on sexual sin is great and non-explicit. Something more explicit but with some very valuable messages, specifically regarding the spiritual front of the battle, I reccomend Tactics by Fred Stoeker. Just be catious of it's explicity, and pay attention to reviews on all other books in the Every Man's series regarding sexual sin. I do agree that some ARE far too explicit. But as this battle guide is God talking to you, not the authors, get it!

1-0 out of 5 stars Hate Yourself: For God's Sake...
I thought Arterburn's book, "Every Man's Struggle" was a single book.I didn't know that it would give way to a whole raft of books, workbooks, CD's, tapes, sub-books, on and on.But I guess I'm not surprised that it happened, it makes the bucks and that's what it is all about for this author.

So, you are born and in time you realize you have certain feelings, God-given, human desires. But WAIT! Arterburn and Co. have a message for you because they have a pipeline direct to the Almighty. What gives them the authority to decide what is between one person and God?That is the most sacred relationship! Arterburn's message is, 'Don't think for yourself, listen to we, 'the chosen!' We KNOW what's right!'And with banners flying, and drums beating they march backwards through time proudly proclaiming: 'The earth was created in six days, Eve literally ate a bad apple, a snake talked to her, God made the sun stand still so a war could be fought' and on and on(Cue a southern preacher with a loud voice and a bad combover: GLOWRY HALLELUJAH!!)These "defenders of the faith" perpetrate their fundamentalism because people don't want to think. They want someone to lead them, pat their head, and tell them they are a good boy/girl.

Before you buy this book, consider a fact:Jim Bakker, Jimmy Swaggart, Ted Haggard, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Schlessinger, and others were the ones who yelled so loudly about immorality, were so self-righteous, judgemental, stern, and dogmatic. And yet? Yeah, you get the idea.

The irony isn't only inescapable, it's tragic because it is done in the name of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is incredible
for starters, i am 18 and still in high school. i have just as many sexual struggles as any other young man and this book is the best thing thats ever happened to me. its provided many hopeful messages about honoring God and women and ive found it to be more encouraging than the Bible (at least in the area of sexual temptation) it not only gives facts and statistics, but what women think and also real-life storries that have much more impact than the Bibles harsh preaching. it was an incredible book and i will continue reading it and encouraging others

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable rewrite of an important message:Also, Saphire never gives a rating better than 1 star
While there is nothing particularly new in this version of Arterburn's message, it does provide practical and tactical ways for young men to avoid the plague of pornography and objectification of women. In this world awash with sexual images, young men need tools to remain pure and holy as they mature toward righteous manhood.

By the way, Saphire has never gives a rating above 1 star as of 1/13/2006.He/she appears to be a non-Christian and angry towards God and men.Take care in accepting that opinion.

1-0 out of 5 stars The cover says it all.
For one thing the book makes women or young women out to be
nothing more than something which is looked at.What about young men facing a sense of vunerability?Nope, not here.
As I said the cover says it all.I have read the whole series
of books and find the same message 'women are objects' men are
objectifiers'so how can it help teens with real life issues?
I think not. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique guide for men to unveiling and discovering true spirituality...
I found in this book a unique guide to understand my own spiritual ways and needs, to accept gender related differences and to find happiness while assuming different roles through the way we, men, live and face life stages.
I would strongly recommend this book to men in search of inner peace, wisdom for life and transcendental answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Rohr tackles new ground
This book fills a void in masculine spirituality. I recommend it for women too.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
This is a great, great book in my opinion (of course!) Each sentence contains so much to think about that each short chapter offers opportunity for deep thought, food for personal journal reflection and rich conversation if used by a group.I am female and have seen much in this book that pertains to my own life.I feel the ideas in this book are just that universal.I was so excited by the concepts that I shared them with my husband during our evening walks.Soon he asked me to not only buy him a copy but to purchase a copy for his nephew, his friend and his boss!My son has a copy and we talk about the book from time to time.My brother-in-law has begun a men's group at his church, talking about Rohr's concepts. This is a very readable book with ideas that on a surface level can appear simplistic but when taken to a deeper level are life-probing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Men Need This!
American men are in a difficult position these days and have been for quite a while. Flogged for their shallow masculinity and hindered in their search for meaninfgul intimacy, its hard to know how and what to do to achieve real spiritual strength and direction. Richard Rohr has been dealing with this matter for a long time and in this extraordinary book he illuminates how we men got here so quickly and gives us great hope that we can move beyond this state into real, robust, fruitful masculinity and wholeness. An easy, enthralling read for men of all ages and faiths.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best on male spirituality

Story Behind the Book

“As I was writing For Women Only to help women understand the inner lives of men, over and over I heard that men wished there was a way to understand their wives, but they felt it was probably impossible. I heard from them, ‘You are writing this little slim volume about men, but if it was about understanding women, it would have to be the size of an encyclopedia! Women are random and complicated!’ These men were surprised and encouraged when I assured them that women are neither random nor complicated, and we can be understood. Men just want to love their wives well, and For Men Only will help them do that.”

3-0 out of 5 stars How to answer the question "Does this dress make me look fat?"
I can't say this is the best written book, nor is it even the best in the 'self-help' category, but it was worth a quick perusal if only to confirm my feelings - I'm a perfectly normal woman!Yes, I need to feel loved.Yes, I'm emotional!Yes, I'll give up financial security to feel loved. No, I don't want you to fix it, but just to listen.Yes, I need to feel attractive to you and then maybe, just maybe, you'll get lucky and get some.

So, if you ever wondered what the proper answer to "Does this dress make me look fat?", pick up a copy of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is the KEY to understanding you partner
If you are a man over 14 years old, you HAVE had plenty of moments when the women close to you have been basically aliens. This book helped me understand my girlfriend's psychological tendencies, and the corresponding book for women helped her understand me. I ended up saying to myself: "Oh, huh, well I'll take the author's word for it," because really a lot of women are subject to a great many emotions. She ended up saying to me: "Is that REALLY true??? I had not noticed ________ . Oh, wow, are you REALLY like that?" Her appreciation for me went way up, because of it, and her new understanding of manhood.

5-0 out of 5 stars Change your marriage ;0)!
I LOVED this book!!! I went out of town on business for two weeks and while I was gone I found this book. After two weeks and reading this book twice, I came home a changed woman, but more importantly, a changed wife.Coming from a divorced family, I didn't know how to treat the men in my life.Whether it be my husband, my father, my nephews, male co-workers, etc.My husband could not believe the transformation and I can honestly say this book saved our marriage. This book is a MUST read for any women to fully understand the inner mind/thoughts of men.I would recommend this book to anyone and I've already bought several more and gave to my closest friends.I hope you enjoy this book as I have and I pray for God to be with you in all your endeavors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reminder
I found this book to be very informative even after 20 years of marriage. It's a great book for us guys to help remind us that women are very different in so many ways. Sometimes I need a reminder of the differences.
I didn't uncover any earth shattering truths, but I did find it to be a healthy tool to keep and refer to occasionally.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Men Only
I think all men should have to read this book before they ever get involved with women.Maybe even in high school as part of health class, to help them understand women. ... Read more

What every man wishes he knew about what his wife desires most.

Authors Stephen Arterburn and Fred Stoeker believe that every man can meet the secret desires of his wife. The problem is, most of us aren't exactly sure what that desire is and how we can go about fulfilling it faithfully.

In Every Man's Marriage, you can discover the common misconceptions about what it means to exercise biblical authority and understand the role of submission in the marriage relationship. This groundbreaking book can help men grasp and apply essential but often overlooked principles for marital leadership.

Through candid reflections on their own struggles to achieve biblical unity in their own marriages, along with many years of combined experience in marital counseling, Arterburn and Stoeker apply solid, time-tested biblical wisdom to the everyday potential distortions that can lead to strife in a marriage.

The second book in the "Every Man" series, this is the perfect follow-up to the best-selling Every Man's Battle. Every Man's Marriage is a terrific resource for establishing mutual respect and sacrifice in your marriage based on Christ's example of loving His bride, the church.

Includes a comprehensive workbook for individual or group study. ... Read more

The key content is amazing and would recomend for marriages in all phases of life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helping Me
This is a good book for those that are still with their wives.I'm currently separated from my wife and the book doesn't deal with that circumstance. However it is helpful.Working in a group would be great. Even though my wife has left me for another man and says I didn't do anything wrong, I know that is not true and I have to come to terms with my selfishness.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read it if you have sex with underaged girls/Porno addict - if not then don't read it
I honestly feel that this book is written for men who don't know how to treat women or don't comprehend the enormity of what marriage is with a woman. If you were not taught what it is to respect woman or yourself for that matter then yes this book could be very helpful to you. However, for those men who view their wives as their sole source of sexual gratification then you don't need to read this book.

One of my biggest issue with this book were the examples it gave of men and their sexual exploits. It talked uses examples of men masterbating to their kid-sister-in-law while she was sleeping in the room. Another youth pastor was having sex with an underaged member of his youth group. Other examples of numerous men addicted to pornography. What if you are not addicted to pornography or sleeping around?

After a considerable amount of prayer I feel that this book fails to identify the man in my position. I am by no means attempting to take a holier than thou attitude, trust me the Lord has humbled me time and time again but what if the woman in my life is (in my eyes) truly the prettiest thing around. No one else compares for a second. I was raised by a wonderful mother who taught me how to respect a woman and yourself. As I have become a christian I have learned how my actions are meant to respect God above all others. This book is not for the man who is totally in love with his wife. It is for a man who needs to have the Lord show him the the results of his actions.

Furthermore - masterbation is not a sin. No you should not masterbate to thoughts of gay men or prostitutes as some of the examples in this book did. It claims that masterbation is a form of idolatry. I disagree. I am a grown adult christian man and when I have partaken in this act I have lifted it up to God to show me if He views it as just. He has shown me that what turns me on the most is the thought of my future wife, whoever she is. I imagine a wedding dress and two wedding rings touching one another and the Lord in delight. To some this may be idolatry. But how can it be idolatry when those thoughts that gratify you are pleasing to God?

Plus this book instructs single men not to masterbate. So where will all of that testosterone and emotion go? According to this book nocturnal emission will take care of it. Since professional boxers and athletes who rely on ferocity and aggression have a common practice of no sex or masterbation prior to an event you can see what will happen to you if you don't masterbate. I prayed and committed days to not doing this and I was ready to rip through a wall. After much prayer I felt God leading me to the realization I explained above. For a good christian argument in favor of masterbation I suggest - Herbert J. Miles - Sexual Understanding Before Marriage & James Dobson, chairman of the board of Focus on the Family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Marriage Book
My wife and I highly recomend this book to all couples, married and engaged. It may challange some of your preconceptions about submission in marriage, but if the husband makes an honest atempt to put the teaching in this book into practice, both he and his wife will be richly rewarded. I would call the message "servant leadership",and it is a struggle for males to implement in their marriage. Because it is so hard, I also recommend a book with the same message - but delivered differently--to help re-enforce the message in EMM. The other book is "Discovering the Mind of a Woman." Despite the title, it is also about the husband being a servant leader. The husband and wife should both read these books so she can be his helpmate in this process. Wives, don't wait for your husband to buy these books, buy them yourself, read them, and then get him to read them. We males are typically slow in the area of personal growth and we need all the incentive from you that you can give us.

Product Description
Men are rediscovering the importance of the spiritual life. And Father Larry Richards is helping them do it. While some writers apply a one-size-fits-all approach to the Christian life, Father Richards draws on his many years of ministry and his own experience as a man to inspire other men as men.

In Be a Man!, he recounts his struggles to learn true manhood, as well as the inspiring stories of others he has served in his decades as a priest. He tells men how to focus on the right goal, how to live as a beloved son of God, of the need to acknowledge one's faults and to live according to the Holy Spirit, to be a man of true love and of wisdom, to appreciate properly the differences between men and women, to pursue holiness, and to make a difference in the world. Not preachy but direct, Father Richards challenges men to be strong, without putting on a mask of false strength or machismo. He calls men to admit their weaknesses and limitations, while urging them to find strength in faith and genuine love to overcome their sins and faults.

Although a celibate priest, he minces no words when it comes to the place of sexuality for the unmarried man as well as for the married man. He shows that true manliness is not opposed to love but thrives on it. Father Richards stresses that a relationship with Christ reveals the meaning of a man's life and his identity as a man. He inspires men to become the true heroes they long to be men of authentic courage, compassion and integrity. This is a highly readable book for men by a man who knows how to talk to men about the things that matter most.

Fr. Larry Richards, a popular speaker at men s conferences around the country, is the pastor of an inner city parish in Erie, PA. He hosts his own daily national radio show on Relevant Radio, and is the founder of "The Reason for Our Hope Foundation".

"Father Larry talks straight to men in his own manly style. He pulls no spiritual punches-I don't think he knows how to! He pokes, pushes, sometimes verbally slaps men into being God's men, all with an obvious love for them and faith in their ability to persevere to heaven."

-Dr. Ray Guarendi, Psychologist, National Syndicated Radio Host, and Author

"Be a Man! is a must-read for all men who are serious about strengthening their relationship with God. This exceptional book speaks clearly and directly, challenging men to live their faith with courage and conviction. Be a Man! is a spiritual wake-up call that offers a refreshingly honest presentation of what it means to be a man of God. With a unique blend of humor, passion, and frankness that has become his trademark style, Fr. Larry Richards explores how a Christ-centered male spirituality fosters growth in holiness, and inspires men to become loving servants of their wives, families, and the Church."

1-0 out of 5 stars Schadenfreude Is Not Manliness
Presumably a reasonable person would agree that to be a good man you also have to be a good citizen as well. Ina pluralistic society that means not basing your judgments, or your politics, on wishing other people ill. It is a good thing to try to shore up a healthy masculinity. But it is another thing entirely, to try to feel like a holy hunk on the basis of putting other people down. Therefore, also, it is one thing for conservative Catholics to have their own views on sexuality. But it is thus quite another thing to engage in the most ugly Schadenfreude in trying to paint gay people as inexorably unhappy. First, this flies in the face of millions of happy healthy gay people in the world. Sociologically gay people often seem to be happier than straight parents. That is saying nothing against straight parents, but it is saying something for gay people. Second, it is a simple calumny to imply, as this ridiculously prejudiced author does throughout his book, that anyone that does not share his views, especially gay people, are therefore embodying "emptiness" as he sees it.But there is even worse from this author. He seems to imply in the book that the minority ofgay people, who happen to suffer from the disease AIDS, as exemplified by a few that he has personally known, are evocations of this "emptiness". And that therefore they are somehow representative of gay people generally in his benighted view. This is really ghoulish presumption, and it will surely appear silly to any reasonable person. Real manliness, in contradistinction to the odd blandishments of this man's views come from a compassionate savvy, which is quite different than diva-like judgments that this book everywhere exhibits. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Jesus Inside
There is an epidemic of Christian Divorce and the reason for it is that Christ is not honored in many Christian Marriages. Many women tear down their own house trying to establish their dreams or plans. What happens is that any decent Christian man that hears from God refuses to submit to a rebellious wife's continual attempt atdominance (or self-will which is manipulation) and this creates constant tension due to the prevalence of the Jezebel spirit of this age.

Anyone who likes this book let me give you some advice - A Good Christian man can't live in dis-order so for all of you rebellious "christian" women do them a favor and marry yourself a heathen, you have more in common with them for they enjoy the same spirit of lawlessness you reality truly espouse.

As for the crazy examples given in the book their deceptive purpose is cloud the thinking of women with emotional rage in order to impair women from thinking rationally and biblically-just realize this is the way the Devil manipulates the rebellious - in essence he provides the false prophet the women was looking for so that she could be free from God's legitimate authority and can do her own thing.

This book like all liberal feminist garbage is at best fit for toilet paper.

3-0 out of 5 stars Christian Men Who Hate Women - by Dr. Margaret J. Rinck
I have not finished reading "Christian Men Who Hate Women" by Dr. Margaret J. Rinck, as it's not as easy to read as "Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them" by Susan Froward, but it is a great addition it. It breaks down the characteristics of the misogynist to different levels. So, while you don't see all of the listed characteristics in the person you are trying to understand, you can still identify whether or not they are a misogynist on some level.

On EASE OF READING, I would rate this book 3/5.
Somehow it doesn't flow smoothly enough for me. Perhaps it uses too many clinical terms, I'm not sure.

On CONTENT, I would rate it a 5/5.
GOOD INFORMATION.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do you believe in 1 Peter 3:1?
Do you believe in 1 Peter 3:1?If not, then you will love this book; if so, then you will see the fundamental problem with it.I pray for the men and households of the women who read this book. The book is like a shotgun, it hits its target, but it also hits the poor creatures that are anywhere in the vicinity of the target.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone involved in counseling women
I found this book when I was researching a friend's dilemma. I was amazed to read the very things I'd heard from her on the pages.
It is easy in the Christian culture where men are 'head' and women are submissive, to get unbalanced in our thinking and acting. In this book Dr Rinck explores how far we have deviated from God's intention for a husband and wife.

I've been involved in church for a long time, and I've seen lots of wierd things. This book explores/explains/details help for women who are in too controlling realtionships. I encourage all male pastors/deacons/youth leaders etc. to read this book.

Christian Men Who Hate Women

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book is absolutely a must read for any person in a leadership position in a Church.More people in the Church need to be aware of this pattern of abuse, and provide a safe harbor for women seeking help. I was not only terrified of my husband, I was judged and criticized by the very people that should have helped me.I had no voice to speak up.This book encouraged me to find my voice and make a better life for myself.I have shared this book with others and have seen the powerful difference it has made in their lives, both men and women. This is not about men-bashing or blaming men.It is about both men and women breaking the cycle of blame and shame. It is about being treated with dignity and respect.Thank you Dr. Rinck for being the voice of the abused and providing a tool for recovery.

Product Description

In the wake of dramatic, recent changes in American family life, evangelical and mainline Protestant churches took markedly different positions on family change. This work explains why these two traditions responded so differently to family change and then goes on to explore how the stances of evangelical and mainline Protestant churches toward marriage and parenting influenced the husbands and fathers that fill their pews.

According to W. Bradford Wilcox, the divergent family ideologies of evangelical and mainline churches do not translate into large differences in family behavior between evangelical and mainline Protestant men who are married with children. Mainline Protestant men, he contends, are "new men" who take a more egalitarian approach to the division of household labor than their conservative peers and a more involved approach to parenting than men with no religious affiliation. Evangelical Protestant men, meanwhile, are "soft patriarchs"—not as authoritarian as some would expect, and given to being more emotional and dedicated to their wives and children than both their mainline and secular counterparts. Thus, Wilcox argues that religion domesticates men in ways that make them more responsive to the aspirations and needs of their immediate families.

4-0 out of 5 stars distinctions
This book offers both a broad analysis of relevant data and nuanced conclusions about the socializing power of variant Christian and non-Christian worldviews on men/husbands/fathers.Simplistic characterizations of the text's careful analysis, like 'conservative Christians are more likely to beat their wives and kids than are the others', offer only an obfuscating wizardry. It's worth the read, and problematizes the easy caricatures of conservative Christianity that fill our pop culture.

1-0 out of 5 stars good book if you don't care about logic
The author claims conservative Christians make better fathers and husbands than mainline Christians and non-religious men.To support his claims he uses some statistical wizardry (really just hiding things). He finds in the process that conservative Christians are more likely to beat their wives and kids than are the others.Yet, in the end, he still claims conservative Christian men make better fathers and husbands.Right!

4-0 out of 5 stars Important distinctions
This book brings some interesting distinctions to the utilitarian side of debates on religion, that is, to the evaluation of religions by their effects.

It is quite common to attribute macho attitudes to religious men, specially fundamentalist ones. Here the author makes a distinction, in the Evangelical field, between born-again Christians and those who are merely conservative and attend church because they expect themselves to do so. ... How to be God’s man in relationship with a woman.

Few men would ever embark on an important project, a significant career change, or a major athletic challenge without gathering all the tactical knowledge possible to insure a good outcome. Yet, when it comes to relationships with women, most men fail to apply the simple principles that make them successful in other areas of life.

It may be easy to get into a relationship with a woman, but it’s not so easy to make the relationship work well. It takes energy. It demands effort. It requires education and understanding.

God is available to help. But there’s a catch: God’s man must connect with God’s purposes before he can truly connect with his wife (or wife-to-be). God uses the marriage relationship to promote growth in men’s lives, because it shows us our character gaps and drives us to Him for solutions.

If you want true intimacy and connection with a woman, you’ll need to grow up and graduate from God’s school of character. This book, Being God’s Man by Understanding a Woman’s Heart, is the perfect start.

4-0 out of 5 stars Open descriptions of temptation
First published in 1991, this book is still in circulation for a reason--Eisenman talks about specific tempations. His focus is male temptation and he both advocates respect for women while reinforcing a sexually-typed take on sin. In particular, Eisenman speaks openly about sexual sin. 3 chapters are dedicated to machismo, lust and affairs, and then 3 on power, money, and performance (perfectionsim.) First, Tom acknowledges his own history of sin, with a clear description of fantasy, masturbation, and pornography. Second, he argues that sin is deceitful, persistent, and consensual. Third, he believes that while God gives us the power to overcome sin, we need to fight against it. He describes that fight with many examples, some from his own experience and some from friends and research. The book ends with a chapter suggesting that women not enable men to continue sinning by choosing co-dependency and an appendix giving 12 strategies for resisting temptation.
Highlights include a clear description of why he believes his masturbation was a compulsive sin. I also liked the list he includes of 12 steps toward consummating an affair. To some extent he predates the Celebrate Recovery movement by citing AA's 12 steps and then summarizing them in 6 principles that form the acrostic "healed."
At various points I was uncomfortable that the description of (sexual) sin was a little too "fresh." In dealing with our compulsive habits and persisting temptations, sometimes I felt he was recommending "white knuckling," e.g., hanging on by dint of our persistent effort. It is effective for a while, but usually ends in another round of frustration. Eisenman talks about this, but the book as a whole seems more focused on the "hanging on" part of the journey. Of course, that is where a lot of us spend a lot of our time in our journey with temptation, so perhaps its the right place to focus. In contrast, the chapters on money and power didn't have the same personal grip, so maybe I want things both ways here. I guess I would want to add that "white knuckling" may buy us some time, but we also need to address the fantasies and rationalizations that got us to the place that we needed to "hang on tight."
The best thing about the book is that it doesn't minimize temptation and it doesn't suggest tempations will cease. Instead, it focuses attention directly on the daily choices we face with respect to some key areas of temptation. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Made to sell, not to help
The book starts off explaining (justifying) the author's recent divorce. After painting himself as the victim of a tragic circumstance, the perfect husband who was betrayed by a coldhearted, uncaring wife, he goes on to talk about his slip into pornography.Again.Rather than offer anything new, the book simply has you re-read their previous book, Every Man's Battle, which clearly didn't work for the author in the first place (hence, his divorce and plunge into porn). If that weren't odd enough, the book they have you read as the primary lesson plan for Every Single Man's Battle, Every Man's Battle, was written exclusively for married men struggling with lust and masturbation.Soooo... not really written for their target audience.

I'm leading a single men's group at church and this was selected as our study guide, leaving me no choice but to quickly improvise a new plan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be a standalone book
Stephen Arteburn has some good ideas in his main book Every Man's Battle that should have gone into a standalone book for single Christian men, and NOT JUST those who are divorced. Unfortunately, all that exists for them is Every Young Man's Battle, which is written for a teenage and young adult audience. Having this as just a workbook supplement to Every Man's Battle is simply not enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Its just a study guide! not a separate book!
This book is just an additive. If you are single just read every man's battle. this book just asks you questions about what you read in every mans battle. It doesn't really tell you anything new. I was disappointed when I got it. I thought this book was a stand alone but it is just a study guide. ... Read more

This is a great book to help anyone struggling to get men involved with ministry at their church. I have spent the last year trying to rebuild a Men's Ministry that had collapsed and found myself trying everything under the sun and not getting any results. I was about to give up when I found this book. I started reading it and found myself laughing and ready to make some changes. Myself and my ministry team have started reading this book together and it has given us hope. We are looking forward to what God has planned for our future thanks to this book. If your Men's Ministry is struggling this is the book that can help change that for you.

I found this book extremely helpful in understanding how to develop a Men's Minsitry. It gives you what to look for and suggetions on how to impliment what they are saying. However it is not a 1,2,3 plan. You take what the writer is saying and apply it to what you feel God is asking you to do. I would highly recommend this to any one running or starting a Men's Ministry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book review.
I have purchases five of these books and ten of the For Women only books to give away to couples who are going through tough times in their marriage or dating time. The unusual insight and help that Shaunty provides is unlike any other marriage/relationship book that I have purchased over the years, and I have around forty in my library. She deals with the varied issues with sensitivity, good research and hard facts that cannot be refuted in my years of counseling experience.I highly recommend this book to all who want to better understand the men in their lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is an excellent book, very insightful. EVERY man should read it!! It's a book that women wish their men would read. Buy the book and discussion guide for your husband, your father, your son, your brother, your uncle, your nephew, your neighbor!

5-0 out of 5 stars Connecting the dots
We've been working on, reading about and teaching relationship building for a number of years. The differences between the internal "wiring" in women and men has been well researched and reported. But most of the reportage is observation without the context of the emotional makeup of the gender.

The Feldhams do a good job of connecting the dots. For example, noting that women do talk more than men but showing that the variety of the emotional and thought landscape provide more to talk about. As well, women process externally, with others, while men do so internally and more slowly, often taking days to work through a situation. These and many more insights make the "Only" books a treasure.

Very importantly, the book(s) are value neutral, not presenting either gender as superior. In all, well done! ... Read more
