Product Description
Meteorology 2e, is an introduction to atmospheric science for science and non-science majors. The text covers all topics expected of an introductory text, organized and presented in a way that offers the instructor considerable flexibility of sequence.

The authors feel this text is distinctive in three major ways. First is its clear, accurate and friendly style of presentation. Second is the considerable attention given to the process of meteorological inquiry, the thoughts and actions of practicing meteorologists in finding out how the atmosphere behaves. Third is the careful attention to pedagogy. By grouping chapters into units, developing concepts from specific examples to general principles (and not the other way around), engaging the reader in questions, repeating explanations from earlier chapters when a reminder would be helpful, pausing for review several times within each chapter, and in many other ways, the Authors have strived to make the text a powerful learning tool, thereby helping the reader to become an active and successful learner. ... Ahren's METEOROLOGY TODAY is the # 1 text in the market! This text presents the fundamental concepts of meteorology in the context of everyday weather observations. This is a perfect blend of theory and application in meteorology. The book features a traditional yet flexible organization, moving from atmospheric elements to air movement to severe weather, then finally global and climate change.Ahren's successfully excites the student reader by teaching them to actively observe the weather. The organization contains enough detail to provide a higher level student with the detail he/she needs, as well as an accessible writing style for the weaker student. This text contains extensive new features that significantly address the market needs of accuracy, currency, earlier presentation of mapping and forecasting, with a greatly enhanced technology package. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Instructor's Edition?
I received the teacher's book and was confused. There wasn't anything to let me know that it wasn't a regular copy. It's not very different from the regular book but that's beside the point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully entertaining
I'm not a meteorologist, but I find this book wonderfully written and beautifully illustrated.
It's the book I'm picking up when I want to spend time reading something else than my computer programming manuals.
This book has very little mathematics inside, it builds up a lot of intuitive pictures in your mind.
When you want to get more quantitative you should buy Meteorology for Scientists and Engineers, but this book could be given as a nice christmas present to anyone with an inquisitive mind.
In fact I'm going to give it to a teenager I know who wants to become a meteorologist. I hope he doesnt read my review before Christmas.

4-0 out of 5 stars It is a easy learning book !

4-0 out of 5 stars Learn how to read the weather while flying.
Mr. Bradbury writes clearly and in an organized manner on aviation weather phenomena that pilots should care about. Pilots who have paid attention during their weather training will have adequate background for this presentation. Perhaps this could be considered the next level of aviation weather education for pilots after they finish their certificate. There is a slight European slant evident. If you are still struggling with the metric system, you may wish to put on a pot of coffee before indulging.
While this book lacks the eye-catching color graphics of NEXRAD echoes, it teaches us how to read the weather and understand why it behaves the way it does. No introductions are contained on how to read a weather chart; explained are the implications of what you're seeing on your weather chart and what this will mean later on in your flight. Clear black and white illustrations are perfectly adequate for conveying frontal phenomena, orographic features, jets, land-sea-air interaction and convection. "Meteorology and Flight" is not written with full-color, glossy pages for the attention span-impaired. Get this book because you care about the significance of the weather you encounter, and the weather you wish to avoid encountering, while flying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Meteorology and Flight
This book covers some very interesting aspects of weather. It is really aimed at pilots, who want a good understanding of what they are flying into. Illustrations and diagrams are excellent. 3-0 out of 5 stars Average climatology text book
When I went to university, which was around when this book was published, text books like this one had great pictures and graphics in them. This one is graphically starved. Now 20 years later, I want to refresh my memory briefly with plenty of graphics, which this one doesn't have much of.

4-0 out of 5 stars All Encompassing Climatology Textbook
Though the 4th edition is now out of print, "General Climatology" by Chritchfield is an unusally well rounded book, covering all aspects of weather and climate in a no-nonscience straight forward manner.Frequent charts and graphs as well as very clear black andwhite photos illustrate the topics very clearly. Not only does the bookcover current climetology, but explores past climate change and futuremodification as well.Opinions are held to a minimum, and alwaysunderstated, so as to let the reader know there is some controversy overvarious topics, and that research is inconclusive at the time ofpublication.Over all, one could do much worse in a college text book. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE Reference
"The Weather and Climate of Tropical Africa" represents Leroux's updated doctoral dissertation (PhD. 1983, WMO sponsored and distributed to all member countries) and contains the rare database of his African work (CD ROM 350 maps, graphics) on which he based his ideas on the general circulation. This is indeed a science book based on observations and their interpretation, not a vulgarization essay. Yet it is remarkably written and Leroux's teaching qualities come through.

Marcel Leroux (1938-2008) was a French climatologist, Professor of Climatology, former Director of the Centre of Research in Tropical Africa Climatology, CRCTA (Dakar, Senegal)and former Director of the Laboratory of Climatology-Risks-Environment, LCRE (Lyon, France), Université Jean-Moulin. He demonstrated through the analysis of synoptic maps, satellite imagery, meteorological and palaeoenvironmental data over Tropical Africa that the seasonal and palaeoclimatic migration of the Meteorological Equator represents a reliable proxy of the Earth's climate evolution.

This migration and the extent of the Meteorological Equator are the consequence of continuous meridional exchanges in the denser, lower layers of the atmosphere, which circulation is governed by the incessant ballet of the Mobile Polar Highs, 1.5km high, 3,000km diameter lenticular cold air-masses anticyclones originating from the poles, whose strength and frequency depends directly on the thermal polar deficit. Cooling spurns an accelerated circulation while warming will slow the general circulation and exchanges.

This book is THE reference on this subject and the results presented here cannot be overlooked, especially now in the clouded climate change debate, where anything and everything is said by many who take undue liberty with real observations to push their models or their agenda.

Product Description

Part of the excitement in boundary-layer meteorology is the challenge associated with turbulent flow - one of the unsolved problems in classical physics. An additional attraction of the filed is the rich diversity of topics and research methods that are collected under the umbrella-term of boundary-layer meteorology. The flavor of the challenges and the excitement associated with the study of the atmospheric boundary layer are captured in this textbook. Fundamental concepts and mathematics are presented prior to their use, physical interpretations of the terms in equations are given, sample data are shown, examples are solved, and exercises are included.

The work should also be considered as a major reference and as a review of the literature, since it includes tables of parameterizatlons, procedures, filed experiments, useful constants, and graphs of various phenomena under a variety of conditions. It is assumed that the work will be used at the beginning graduate level for students with an undergraduate background in meteorology, but the author envisions, and has catered for, a heterogeneity in the background and experience of his readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Stull's Introduction to Boundary Layer Meteorology is a classic text that remains as valuable today as 20 years ago when it was first published. It is by far the most comprehensive and accessible text of it kind. Whether you are interested in the underlying physics of boundary layer processes, measurement techniques, or analysis methods, this book is indispensable. It should be on the shelf of every graduate student seeking to understand boundary layer processes and in the reference library of every scientist whose work touches an atmospheric processes near the ground.

What I don't understand is why this seller doesn't have the shipping number so that I can track my package or give me updates on when it has been shipped.Giving me a two week window with the final possible arrival date 3 and a half weeks after my purchase was made without any kind of updates of any kind is not acceptable.I got a full refund and they were helpful but they need to fix the way the inform the buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars For advanced students
Very comprehensive book, cover all the important topics in Boundary Layer phenomena's: friction - turbulence - stability -fluxes- advection of atmospherics' variablesetc' . Product Description
During the course of this century, meteorology has become unified, physics-based, and highly computational. Calculating the Weather: Meteorology in the 20th Century explains this transformation by examining thevarious roles of computation throughout the history of meteorology, giving most attention to the period from World War I to the 1960s. The electronic digital computer, a product of World War II, led to great advances in empirical, theoretical, and practical meteorology. At the same time, the use of the computer led to the discovery of so-called"chaotic systems,"and to the recognition that there may well be fundamental limits to predicting the weather.
One of the very few books covering 20th century meteorology, this text is an excellent supplement to any course in general meteorology, forecasting, or history of science.

Key Features
* Provides a narrative account of the growth of meteorology in the 20th century
* Explains how forecasting the weather became a physics-based science
* Studies the impact of the computer on meteorology and thus provides an example of science transformed by the computer
* Describes three traditions in meteorology:
* The empirical tradition of gathering data and making inferences
* A theoretical tradition of explaining atmospheric motions by means of the laws of physics
* The practical tradition of predicting the weather
* Analyzes the increasing role of calculation within each of the traditions and explains how electronic digital computers made possible many connections between traditions ... Read more

This volume provides a critical edition, translation and introduction to the "Otot ha-Shamayim", Samuel Ibn Tibbon's Hebrew version of Aristotle's "Meteorology", completed in 1210. This treatise, based on the Arabic paraphrase of the "Meteorology" by Ibn al-Bittriq, was the first Aristotelian work to be translated into Hebrew. It contains quotations from the lost Arabic translation of Alexander of Aphrodisias's commentary on the "Meteorology" and from Ibn Rushd's commentary, and aims to provide a more complete picture of Aristotle's text than the Arabic paraphrase. ...
