5-0 out of 5 stars "The man at the wheel was taught to feel contempt for the wildest blow..."
INSTANT WEATHER FORECASTING by Alan Watts (NOT the philosopher Alan Wilson Watts, by the way) is a handy and important quick reference guide that's simple to use. Simply match the sky you see with one of the photos in this book and you have a dead reckoning weather prediction for the next six to twelve hours.

It may not be a weatherfax, but for those of us who sail and depend on our informed instincts INSTANT WEATHER FORECASTING can be a lifesaver---especially in having a sense for local conditions.

2-0 out of 5 stars can you forcast with this book?
This is a short, pamphlet book with 20-30 full page pictures of clouds, accompanied by technical information that would supposedly allow you to look at the sky and predict the weather.I don't think so.The weather wizards book discussed the progression of cloud formations and is a much better book for this purpose.I found this book to be at one too technical and too simple.Had the author placed the photographs in the order one typically observes the change from high to low to high, or warm cold warm, and discussed what is happening within these systems and how the clouds reflect that, this could have been much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very brief outline... that is really useful at sea!
This book rates 5 stars IF you use it for its intended pupose only.

Very fast. No mounds of text to crawl through.Find the photo and sky that most closely matches what you are seeing, factor in a couple of additional points, and your predictions for the next several hours, or a bit more than that, are likely to be as reliable as any other source you may have.
This little book should be an essential resource at sea.

Downside?More than half a day or so, and accuracy of your prediction will decrease. While this is always true in looking at weather forecasting tools, be certain to keep this in mind when using this very nice quick resource.

Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars should be on every sailor's shelf
great pocket guide to forecasting the weather in the near-term future. (ie, 2-4 hours in advance) this would be an excellent companion for any outdoor enthusiast. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacularly accurate
It's interesting to read the review below because it ignores the most important issue-how accurate was Jennifer Lawson when she was making weather predictions?

Both before and after this book, she was amazingly accurate. So accurate that her predictions were statisticallyfar better than any meteorologist working in Australia, so accurate that mainstream meteorologists in Australia attacked her incessantly and used name calling because they could not attack her record.

This book is obviously dated and apparently Miss Lawson no longer publicly predicts the weather because she got tired of the relentless personal attacks, but you if you are truly interested in weather, buy this book and compare her predictions to the subsequent occurrences.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dial a Storm
I bought this book mainly out of curiosity. The main theme I got was the correlation between past geological disasters, such as the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius and the disappearance of Atlantis, and what the future hasin store for us.What I read wasn't really that big of a surprise. California has been expecting The Big Quake for decades, and each year Ihear that it could come in the next thirty years. There is no countdown orpredicted date because nobody knows. What the author is trying to do ispredict when certain storms or eruptions will pop up in any given area byusing the astrological positions of the planets. She lists each geologicalarea, along with the date and the disaster that is supposed to strike.IfI had a choice between believing the weatherman and this book, I think I'lllook outside and use my common sense. ... Product Description
The aim of the presented doctoral thesis is the development of components for an operational flood forecastingsystem. Two methods to determine the rainfall-runoff relationship were applied in a casestudy in a small Alpine catchment:(i) Application of the raster-based hydrological model WaSiM-ETH. This model is basedon the conceptual TOPMODEL- approach. Model parameters were determined by aninverse modelling algorithm;(ii) Application of artificial neural networks for a short-term runoff prediction. The study area was the catchment of the Zieplbach torrent in the Community of Westendorf,Tyrol, Austria. Discharge and precipitation measurements of this 1 km² catchment wereavailable for the period from July 2000 until July 2003.This book is suited for hydrologists and hydraulic engineers using hydrological models or with an interest in data-driven approaches. ... Product Description
The National Academies' Roundtable on Science and Technology for Sustainability hosted a workshop 'Knowledge-Action Systems for Seasonal to Interannual Climate Forecasting' in 2004 to discover and distill general lessons about the design of effective systems for linking knowledge with action from the last decade's experience with the production and application of seasonal to interannual climate forecasts. Workshop participants described lessons they had learned based on their experiences developing, applying, and using decision support systems in the United States, Columbia, Brazil, and Australia. Some of the key lessons discussed, as characterized by David Cash and James Buizer, were that effective knowledge-action systems: define and frame the problem to be addressed via collaboration between knowledge users and knowledge producers; tend to be end-to-end systems that link user needs to basic scientific findings and observations; are often anchored in 'boundary organizations' that act as intermediaries between nodes in the system - most notably between scientists and decision makers; feature flexible processes and institutions to be responsive to what is learned; use funding strategies tailored to the dual public/private character of such systems; and require people who can work across disciplines, issue areas, and the knowledge and action interface. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's just a pocket guide
If all you want is a handy quick reference for weather-watching, then this (very thin) book is good.I had wanted to learn all about weather, and really needed more examples, pictures, explanations. So I'll find and read a real text book, but then I'll carry Hodgson's little book when I go hiking.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book is written for the non-technical reader who has an interest in acquiring a better understanding of energy and its impact on climate change. It provides some much needed background on energy sources and their limitations and describes the links between energy and climate change. It discusses various energy based solutions to climate change and considers the financial consequences of these solutions for both the economy and the energy consumer. It provides the reader with a clear understanding of commonly used (but often not clearly explained) terms like 'renewable energy', 'base-load power', 'peak oil', 'biofuels', 'global warming', 'greenhouse gas emissions', 'energy security', 'emissions trading', 'carbon taxes' and 'carbon offsets'. It offers practical solutions to ways that the energy consumer can save energy in the home, workplace and on the road. There are widely differing views about solutions to energy and climate change. This book provides an unbiased look at both sides of this debate and addresses what still needs to be done before we can return to an all renewable energy economy. Some conservationists see the problem as relatively straight forward requiring deep cuts in emissions now by improving energy efficiency, energy conservation and using only renewable resources. Many energy industry engineers and scientists see the problem as being much more involved. This book looks at why using renewable energy sources is not quite as simple as it seems. It considers the impact of aggressive emission reduction targets that demand reductions before we have the technology in place and the possible risks of such a strategy. The book discusses the impact of energy changes on both the developed and the developing world and the need to have solutions that will be widely accepted. It considers some of the related political and economic issues that surround the debate such as emissions trading, emissions taxing, offset schemes, incentives and regulations with a description and comparison of each. It discusses what the energy mix might look like over the next few decades and what would be needed before we can have an all renewable energy future. It also looks at the thorny issue of nuclear power and its place in the total equation. ... Read more

Product Description
The Earth's climate is constantly changing. Some of the changes are progressive, while others fluctuate at various time scales. The El Niño-la Niña cycle is one such fluctuation that recurs every few years and has far-reaching impacts. It generally appears at least once per decade, but this may vary with our changing climate. The exact frequency, sequence, duration and intensity of El Niño's manifestations, as well as its effects and geographic distributions, are highly variable. The El Niño-la Niña cycle is particularly challenging to study due to its many interlinked phenomena that occur in various locations around the globe. These worldwide teleconnections are precisely what makes studying El Niño-la Niña so important.

Cynthia Rosenzweig and Daniel Hillel describe the current efforts to develop and apply a global-to-regional approach to climate-risk management. They explain how atmospheric and social scientists are cooperating with agricultural practitioners in various regions around the world to determine how farmers may benefit most from new climate predictions. Specifically, the emerging ability to predict the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle offers the potential to transform agricultural planning worldwide.Biophysical scientists are only now beginning to recognize the large-scale, globally distributed impacts of ENSO on the probabilities of seasonal precipitation and temperature regimes.Meanwhile, social scientists have been researching how to disseminate forecasts more effectively within rural communities.Consequently, as the quality of climatic predictions have improved, the dissemination and presentation of forecasts have become more effective as well. This book explores the growing understanding of the interconnectedness of climate predictions and productive agriculture for sustainable development, as well as methods and models used to study this relationship. ...
