Product Description
Almost half the U.S. population lives along the coast. In another 20 years, this population is expected to more than double in size. The unique weather and climate of the coastal zone, circulating pollutants, altering storms, changing temperature, and moving coastal currents affect air pollution and disaster preparedness, ocean pollution, and safeguarding near-shore ecosystems. Activities in commerce, industry, transportation, freshwater supply, safety, recreation, and national defense also are affected. The research community engaged in studies of coastal meteorology in recent years has made significant advancements in describing and predicting atmospheric properties along coasts. "Coastal Meteorology" reviews this progress and recommends research that would increase the value and application of what is known today. ... Read more

Product Description
An expert and fascinating look at the subject of atmospheric phenomena, this text explores a multiplicity of subjects. The introduction is succeeded by discussions of condensation nuclei, the building blocks of clouds, and the formation of clouds and their variety. Ice crystals and the formation of rain and snow receive a detailed examination, as do the properties and formation of hail. A review of the techniques for cloud modifications includes the use of dry and silver-iodide particles; a look at the artificial stimulation of rainfall explores commercial cloud seeding; and a survey of methods for the modification of hailstorms covers the use of rockets and seeding with giant salt nuclei and silver iodide. 1962 ed. 26 figures. 16 halftones. Appendix. Additional reading material. Index.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly thorough - hits the concepts
Brief chapter reviews included. Variety of review methods (fill-in, multiple choice, interpretation of concept pictures) help students sharpen understanding of the main concepts from each chapter. Plenty of room for additional notes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasing
Book was delivered on time and was in good condition like it was stated in the review, the only problem I had was the tracking number was out of date and I was unable to track my order, other then that very good service.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what my son needed
I bought the book and it came just in time as the picture portrayed it the book was in ggod shape and he was able to keep up with the course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the physical science, but strange theories.
I use this in an online class at present. The readability is high and the slightly larger font reminds me of elementary school textbooks. A lot easier on the eyes than most textbooks, for sure.

And while it explains things well enough, in the beginning chapters, there are a few theories of the origins of the Earth as we know it that leave me questioning whether the author really believed that was all there was to it. I'm not religious, so this has nothing to do with that. I just can't help but feel that the author left out some serious information that made the theories make any sort of sense.

Regardless, I'll leave that part up to you to decide. I still like the layout of this book a lot better than any others I've had since middle school. Too much text on a page is still too much, I don't care how much paper you're saving. The text size difference is very subtle but it makes a huge difference to me, and for that I'm grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introductory book.
This was a very good book as a background for further study in meteorology.I got it for a class, and I actually enjoy doing my reading. That being said, it's not very qualitative. Fortunately, in my class we discussed the different mathematical formulas that drive a lot of the phenomena covered in this book, but the book itself didn't have any of them.If you're buying this book, it is probably for a class, and it's a great supplement for your lectures. ... Product Description

Between 1800 and 1870 meteorology emerged as both a legitimate science and a government service in America. Challenging the widely held assumption that meteorologists were mere "data-gatherers" and that U.S. scientists were inferior to their European counterparts, James Rodger Fleming shows how the 1840s debate over the nature and causes of storms led to a "meteorological crusade" that would transform both theory and practice. Centrally located administrators organized hundreds of widely dispersed volunteer and military observers into systematic projects that covered the entire nation. Theorists then used these systems to "observe" weather patterns over large areas, making possible for the first time the compilation of accurate weather charts and maps.

When in 1870 Congress created a federal storm-warning service under the U.S. Army Signal Office, the era of amateur scientists, volunteer observers, and adhoc organizations came to an end. But the gains had been significant, including advances in natural history and medical geography, and in understanding the general circulation of the earth's atmosphere.

This volume provides an excellent advanced introduction to the radio occultation remote sensing technique based on signals from the Global Positioning System (GPS).
