Editorial Review

Product Description
The aim of this comprehensively written volume is to provide a baseline of information on the normal microflora at various sites in the body. It focuses on the mouth, upper digestive tract, large intestine, skin, and urinogenital tract. Written in an easy-to-read format, this book highlights the level of detail available. For example, it explains that in the mouth and colon the data are extremely detailed and good quantitative information is available on large numbers of bacterial species. This work analyzes the similarities and differences between the microfloras of the various "internal" surfaces, and discusses the clear value of good taxonomy. It focuses on problems and extended research in the progress at other sites. Because this work researches the advances and discoveries made in specific areas of human microbial ecology, it is an ideal source for all who are involved in microbiology, bacteriology, and infectious diseases. ... Product Description
The leaf surface or phyllosphere is a major habitat for microorganisms. Microbes on or within leaves play important roles in plant ecology, and these microbes can be manipulated to enhance plant growth or reduce plant disease. This book presents a number of critical reviews by internationally recognized experts on the microbial ecology of leaves. Topics include methods of assessment of microbial populations on leaf surfaces, leaves as reservoirs of ice nucleation phenomenon, and leaves as microbial habitats in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. The book will be of interest to students and scientists in numerous disciplines, including botany, aerobiology, meteorology, ecology, agriculture, and microbiology. ... Read more

Product Description
All aerial plant surfaces, including leaves, stems and flowers are inhabited by diverse assemblages of microorganisms, including filamentous fungi, yeasts, bacteria, and bacteriophages. These organisms have profound effects on plant health and thus impact on ecosystem and agricultural functions. This book is based on proceedings from the 8th International Symposium on the mircobiology of aerial plant surfaces, held in Oxford 2005. This is a five yearly conference which brings together international scientists and provides a unique opportunity to discuss developments in this field. ... Read more

Product Description
Lake Plußsee is a small eutrophic kettle lake in northern Germany. Because it is sheltered and has no inflow from rivers, the Plußsee exhibits stable stratification and is especially suitable for limnological studies. This book presents the results of extensive research conducted on the ecophysiology of microorganisms - principally bacteria - at the Plußsee over the past several decades. It begins with three chapters on the general limnological state of the lake: physical factors, inorganic nutrients, plankton composition and succession, fish fauna, etc. These chapters are followed by discussions of dissolved organic matter and photosynthetic production of organic matter by phytoplankton. The remainder of the book addresses the dynamics of structure, function and metabolism of the microorganisms in the Plußsee. ... Read more

Product Description
The complexity of the microbial population of the animal gastro-intestinal trac has been recognised long ago. However, thus far, investigations have been limited to a few major groups, considered to be dominating, and pathogens that are detrimental and may case diseases and concomitant financial losses in the production animal. Thanks to the latest developments, including improved micriological detection and sampling techniques, and the application of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine, our knowlede has increased rapidly in recent years. In addition, new approaches towards improving and/or stabilising animal health, are addressed, with special emphasis on probiotics, and also with regard to the use selected bacterial strains as vehicles for delivery of pharmaceutically active compounds to the muscosa. The book is unique in several respects, not only by its coverage of an extremely wide area in animal gut microbiology, but also by the fact that production animals such as fish and reindeer are included.Scope and treatment of the subject matter and the kind of information that can be found in the volume:Colonisation and development (succession), and mucosal surface composition of the normal microbial population flora in the healthy animal are addressed, whilst estensive information is given on diverse and dominating bacterial populations of different animal types. Reference is also made to those microbial groups considered to be of special benefit to the health and immune protection of the (young) animal bacteria. The development and application of models of the Gastro-Intestinal tract provides a solid basis for studying gut microbial interactions, whilst molecular approaches and the us of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine is treated in a comprehensive manner.

  • Wide coverage of different animal types and their gut microbial ecology
  • Extensive and partly new information on the major microbial groups associated with the animal gastro-intestinal tract
  • The book is unique and partly new information and up-to-date information proved in the chapters as a whole

Product Description
Grain legume crops, e.g. common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.), and soyabeans (Glycine max L.) are amongst the main sourcesof protein in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Their high proteincontent derive from their ability, in symbiosis with Rhizobiumbacteria, to fix atmospheric nitrogen.
Incorporating contributions from molecular biologists, microbiologists, plant breeders and soil scientists, this volumereports the results of an FAO/IAEA Co-ordinated Research Programme(1992-1996), whose main objective was to develop molecularbiological methods to study rhizobial ecology. Use of better trackingmethods will help enhance biological nitrogen fixation and thus grainlegume yields, while reducing their reliance on soil- and/orfertilizer-nitrogen.
This volume will be invaluable to scientists working on biologicalnitrogen fixation, soil microbial ecology and legume production. ... Read more

Product Description
The book is divided into three parts that are logically connected. The first part defines the principal characteristics of the subterranean world and describes the microorganisms that live there as well as the environmental constraints they are subjected to. The second part shows how the action of the microorganisms can modify the physico-chemical surroundings, the microbiological equilibria and the growth of plants. The third part dwells on a few methods of intervention that would help in limiting the proliferation of harmful microorganisms and how to make the best use of the activity of auxiliary microorganisms. ...
