One of the best book I had about African trucking, and security issues out in the bush, etc.

Reliable Combat Tracking
I'm prejudiced. I have served in combat as a pointman/tracker and was taught the step-by-step approach, had some minor success with it and was wounded several times as a result. You simply cannot serve as a pointman and a tracker at the same time without serious consequence. You can't have your eyes on the ground and your eyes on the bush at the same time. What you get with David Scott-Donelan and this book is a remarkable introduction into the world of tactical tracking from someone with impressive credentials. This isn't esoteric hype or 'Hey! Let's go search for grandma' tracking. With Tactical Tracking Operations you're getting decades of hard fought and earned experienced confined in just several hundred pages. You won't learn to become a tactical tracker with one reading nor will you earn a badge or beret. That comes from hands-on, boots on the ground missions against armed enemies who are determined to do you harm. Then, if you're oh so fortunate-to survive you learn to refine those techniques, learn in spite of your ego, and realize the value of those like Scott-Donelan and what they bring to the table.
Perhaps that is why elite Special Operations units today employ his Tactical Tracking techniques and why it is even part of the Marines Combat Hunter program.
I have high respect for Search and Rescue teams who go out to bring back those who are injured or lost just as I do for those trackers who introduce something of real value into the mix. However, Tactical Tracking is for combat or special operations missions where the need to know which weapons work best, which cammo pattern assists the team members in the bush, and which tactics and strategies can save lives out weigh the nonsense of puffed up personalities vying for time in the limelight.
If you're looking for a book that delves into what tactical tracking is all about without the hoopla, hype or gloss then you need to add David Scott-Donelan's book to your library. It is battle born and battle bled and all you're risking here is a papercut.
Now, let me hear a loud Hoo-ah and Semper Fi for all of those honorably serving in uniform. And while we're at it, let's hear one for Scott-Donelan as well.

The last Army dog field manual (FM) was published in 1977. It reflected military working dog (MWD) doctrine developed during the Vietnam era. Although useful at that time, much of the information has since become obsolete. Today, MWD teams are employed in dynamic ways never before imagined. Today's MWD team is a highly deployable capability that commanders have used around the world from Afghanistan to Africa and from the Balkans to Iraq. This manual will optimize the capabilities of our MP forces as they conduct area security, maneuver, and mobility support operations. The ASV equips MP forces with a unique platform unmatched by other combat support (CS) or combat service support (CSS) branches. The ASV enables MP forces to mitigate a host of contemporary threats while affording maximum protection to the crew. Employing the ASV in Army and joint operations expands the ability of the maneuver commander to project force protection and sustainment operations throughout the area of operations (AO). Army and joint operations (such as Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom) have spawned an increase in interest and production of the ASV to support such operations. Accordingly, this doctrine is drawn largely from lessons learned in those operations. Specifically, the contents of this manual are a direct product of veterans with ASV operational experience in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. The ASV enables MP forces to observe the battlefield and engage the enemy while remaining secure behind vehicle armor. The armor protection provided by the ASV is considerable. It is, however, vulnerable, especially to tanks and fighting vehicles. Armor provides limited protection against antitank guns, missiles, or rockets. Today, United States (US) forces are deployed on peacekeeping, peace enforcement, and humanitarian assistance operations worldwide. During these operations, US forces are often faced with unruly and violent crowds intent on disrupting peace and the ability of US forces to maintain peace. Worldwide instability coupled with increasing US military participation in peacekeeping and related operations requires that US forces have access to the most current doctrine and tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTP) necessary to quell riots and restore public order. This new study of American support to the regime of Ngo Dinh Diem in South Vietnam illuminates many contemporary events and foreign policies.

During the Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations, the United States used foreign police and paramilitary assistance to combat the spread of communist revolution in the developing world. This became the single largest internal security programme during the neglected 1955-1963 period. Yet despite presidential attention and a sustained campaign to transform Diem’s police and paramilitary forces into modern, professional services, the United States failed to achieve its objectives.

Given the scale of its efforts, and the Diem regime’s importance to the US leadership, this text identifies the three key factors that contributed to the failure of American policy. First, the competing conceptions of Diem’s civilian and military advisers. Second, the reforms advanced by US police training personnel were also at odds with the political agenda of the South Vietnamese leader. Finally, the flawed beliefs among US police advisers based on the universality of American democracy.

This study also shows how notions borrowed from academic social science of the time became the basis for building Diem’s internal security forces.
