Product Description
Over 140 color photos, diagrams, and text reveal the crystal structures, habits, names, and changing family relationships of silicate crystals. This thorough guide provides an introduction to crystallography, the current classification of silicate structures, and reviews orthosilicates, disilicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, and framework silicates. Explore different ways the silicate tetrahedron can be arranged and great diversity of structures that result. Crystal structure is presented with drawings of ideal crystal forms and photographs of real crystals. In this way, mineral collectors can better understand the interplay between atomic arrangements and external habits, and ultimately develop an eye for recognizing crystal symmetry. This book is a must for all serious collectors of minerals. ... Product Description
The molecular mechanisms underlying the fact that a crystal cantake a variety of external forms is something we have come tounderstand only in the last few decades. This is due to recentdevelopments in theoretical and experimental investigations of crystalgrowth mechanisms.
Morphology of Crystals is divided into three separatelyavailable volumes. Part A contains chapters on roughening transition;equilibrium form; step pattern theory; modern PBC; and surfacemicrotopography. This part provides essentially theoretical treatmentsof the problem, particularly the solid-liquid interface. Part Bcontains chapters on ultra-fine particles; minerals; transition frompolyhedral to dendrite; theory of dendrite; and snow crystals. Allchapters are written by world leaders in their respective areas, andsome can be seen as representing the essence of a life's work. This isthe first English-language work which covers all aspects of themorphology of crystals - a topic which has attracted topscientific minds for centuries. As such, it is indispensable foranyone seeking an answer to a question relating to this fascinatingproblem: mineralogists, petrologists, crystallographers, materialsscientists, workers in solid-state physics and chemistry, etc.
In Parts A: Fundamentals and B: Fine Particles, Minerals andSnow equilibrium and kinetic properties of crystals are generallyapproached from an `atomistic' point of view. In contrast, Part C:The Geometry of Crystal Growth follows the alternative andcomplementary `geometrical' description, where bulk phases areconsidered as continuous media and their interfaces as mathematicalsurfaces with orientation-dependent properties. Equations of motionfor a crystal surface are expressed in terms of vector and tensoroperators working on surface free energy and growth rate, bothexpressed as functions of surface orientation and driving force, or`affinity' for growth. This approach emphasizes the interrelationbetween equilibrium and kinetic behavior. Part 1 establishes thetheoretical framework. Part 2 gives a construction toolbox forexplicit (analytic) functions. An extra chapter is devoted toexperimental techniques for measuring such functions: a new approachto sphere growth experiments. The emphasis throughout is on principlesand new concepts.
Audience: Advanced readers familiar with traditional aspects ofcrystal growth theory. Can be used as the basis for an advancedcourse, provided supplementation is provided in the areas of atomisticmodels of the advancing surface, diffusion fields, etc. ... Read more

The four-volume “Science of Everyday Things” set illustrates the importance of scientific and mathematical principles through their use in everyday life. Each volume focuses on a specific scientific discipline — biology, chemistry, earth sciences and physics — offering an in-depth understanding of each discipline and its theories, creating a sense of real-life relevance for students and those not scientifically-inclined, and including interesting facts and details relating to each principle. The fascinating entries offer explanations of concepts using a straightforward, step-by-step approach, and present theories in their everyday applications. Some examples of the entries covered include how osmosis is used in dehydrating fruit; Charles' law and the chemical reaction that sets off an airbag; and how algorithms are used to figure out the NCAA playoff tournaments.

From the supplier: Several alluvial gem deposits in Sri Lanka have yielded one of the rarest gem minerals in the world, the Sinhalite. Sinhalite specimens recovered from Sri Lanka were finely pitted, which resulted from etching rather than abrasion. The specimens also exhibited a optical absorption spectra between 420 to 1,000 nm in a Sequoi-Turner Model 340 spectrophotometer with a bandwidth of 8 nm. The specimen also showed no excess of aluminum, compared to earlier tests that showed high excess aluminum.

From the supplier: Certain crystals which are unable to continue their growth in particular directions can be attractive. The interrupted growth of some crystals is attributed to trace impurities of many minerals, which can change the shape of growing crystals. This occurs when thin, almost imperceptible, layers form on growing faces, inhibiting or delaying further growth. A good example of these crystals are trapiche emeralds discovered at a mine in Colobia.

Product Description
"Introduction to Mineralogy" is a modern, introductory mineralogy book that provides detailed descriptions of over 100 minerals. It discusses classical crystallography, chemical bonding, controls on mineral structure, mineral stability, and crystal growth, providing readers with a solid foundation to help them better understand the nature and occurrence of minerals. Included with the book is a companion CD by Daniel J Schulze, "An Atlas of Minerals in Thin Section". It contains images of minerals as seen in thin section using a polarizing microscope, listed both by structure and composition and alphabetically. Each mineral page includes the mineral name, chemical formula, two to four images, and explanatory text. All images can be enlarged to near-screen size. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Half way decent Min book
I will be short and to the point.I just took mineralogy this fall, and this book was pretty good. It's not a sit down and read type of textbook, however. It comes in handy during optical mineralogy with microscopes, and for learning terms. The information for each mineral is well documented with optical, chemical, physical, symmetry, and locations where they're found. One thing I would have liked was color pictures and even thin section images, but there are other books for that.Overall, it's very helpful for anyone he needs a good guide or is just starting in mineralogy.
