Chapters: List of Councilmembers of Bloomington, Minnesota, William B. Mitchell, Priscilla Lord, Don Ness, John Fedo, Teresa Daly, William Lochren, Walter Henry Sanborn. Excerpt: Councilmembers of the City of Bloomington, Minnesota. When the Bloomington City Council first convened in 1953, all Councilmembers were elected "at large." That is, each Councilmember was elected to represent the entire city's residents and interests. At that time, the Council comprised 5 members, including the Mayor, who was (and still is) an at-large Councilmember. The City Charter, adopted in 1960, called for an increase in the number of Councilmembers from 5 to 7. A 7-member council was first seated in 1962. In 1976, 4 of the 6 at-large positions were assigned the duty of representing the residents and interests of a specific quadrant of the City (District I to the SE, District II to the SW, District III to the NW, and District IV to the NE). The remaining 2 positions continued to represent the interests of the city at-large. In 1976 and 1977, during the transition to this new configuration, the council actually had 8 members (1 Mayor, 4 district Councilmembers, and 3 at-large Councilmembers). The third at-large position was eliminated in 1978, and the resulting structure has continued unchanged to this day. A list of Bloomington's mayors can be found at List of mayors of Bloomington, Minnesota. The following information was derived from information on the City of Bloomington's Website: "Family tree of Bloomington mayors and councilmembers." 1953 Comments: Bloomington became a Village on May 11, 1953. 1954 1955 1956 Comments: McCutchan resigned May 1956. Herman Kossow appointed May 7, 1956. 1957 1958 1959 Comments: Donaghue resigned May 2, 1959. Maistrovich appointed Jun... More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2303032 ... Read more

Excerpt: Siebert Field is the baseball stadium at the University of Minnesota where the Minnesota Golden Gophers college baseball team currently plays portions of their seasons. Some early season contests are normally held at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. It is named in honor of Dick Siebert, a former head coach who led the Gophers to three national titles. From 1971 to 1978 it was known as Bierman Field, in honor of Bernie Bierman. The ballfield is part of an athletic complex on a single large block that also has facilities for track-and-field, football, softball and indoor sports, and is adjacent to the other U of M sports venues as well as the campustown area called Dinkytown. The block containing Siebert Field is bounded by 15th Avenue SE and railroad tracks, to the northwest and north; 8th Street SE, to the northeast; 5th Street SE, to the southwest; and railroad tracks to the south and southeast. The official street address of Siebert Field, according to the Gophers website, is 516 15th Avenue SE. The sign at the ballpark entrance reads 1606 8th Street SE. The ballfield itself is set back from 15th Avenue, with a football practice field in between. 8th Street borders the ballpark on its third base side. Prior to 1971 the team played at Delta Field, which was beyond the left field fence of the Bierman/Siebert ballfield.. The old field is now occupied by a cluster of softball diamonds. The track-and-field stadium beyond the right field corner of Siebert Field carries Bierman's name. Siebert Field was built on a former Minneapolis neighborhood. The tops of the houses were razed, and the outfield is built...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2614343 ... Read more

Chapters: Twin City Rapid Transit Company. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 59. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Twin City Rapid Transit Company (TCRT), also known as Twin City Lines (TCL), was a transportation company that operated streetcars, and buses in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area in the U.S. state of Minnesota. Other types of transportation were tested including taxicabs and steamboats, along with the operation of some destination sites such as amusement parks. It existed under the TCRT name from a merger in the 1890s until it was purchased in 1962. At its height in the early-20th century, the company operated an intercity streetcar system that was believed to be one of the best in the United States. It is a predecessor of the current Metro Transit bus and light rail system that operates in the metro area. TCRT commissioned water-color painting of the streetcar system in the Twin Cities, originally completed in 1904; updated 1916.The origins of street rail transport in the Twin Cities are not entirely known. Some sources state that it dates back to 1867, when businessman and mayor Dorilus Morrison began building rails in downtown Minneapolis. He quickly joined forces with Colonel William S. King and other Minneapolis businessmen to create the Minneapolis Street Railway. However, the lines didn't go very far, and the railway was useless for a time. There are some indications that a streetcar was purchased but never used, collecting dust for several years. On the other side of the Mississippi River, the St. Paul Railway Company started the first successful horse-drawn streetcar system of the metro area in St. Paul. Then in 1875, the reformed Minneapolis Street Railway made a deal with the Minneapolis City Council where the company would have exclusive access t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=447311 ...
