Excerpt: Yazoo City, Mississippi -Yazoo City is located at (32.856458, -90.407379), 40 miles northwest of Jackson at the junctions of US Highways 49, 49E, and 49W, and MS Highways 3, 16, and 149, on the banks of the Yazoo River, near the Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. . US 49W provides a fairly direct link between Yazoo City and Belzoni. The old highway segment has been renamed MS 149. MS 149 passes through Panther Creek Swamp NWR and the communities of Louise and Midnight before reconnecting with the new US 49W at Silver City, seven miles south of Belzoni. The new highway makes the town of Carter so near that it might be considered for annexation by Yazoo City in a few years. There are now two bridges across the Yazoo River at Yazoo City. The section of MS 3 in Yazoo City is called Haley Barbour Parkway. Barbour, the current governor of Mississippi, grew up in Yazoo City and has a home on Wolf Lake, a lake north of Yazoo City. US Highway 49 (part of which was formerly US 49E) through Yazoo City is named Jerry Clower Boulevard, after the famous comedian, a former resident of Yazoo City. Yazoo City is also known as the "Gateway to the Delta" due to its location on the transition between the two great landforms that characterize the geography of Mississippi (the western part of town lies i...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=122475 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars knowledge = easy travel
great guides usually stay a secret- I hope this one does not.
a combination of tongue in cheek cultural anthropology guidebook which leaves you with a sense of seeing all of the back roads THAT OTHERS UNFORTUNATELY MISS.NOT ONLY GIVING YOU HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES BUT ALSO HUMOROUS AND ENTERTAINING WRITING.
YOU CAN TELL THIS GUY LOVES THE PEOPLE HE SPENDS TIME WITH (sorry about the caps)
another insight is that he does good food reviews and loves beer in all types.
Hope this guy writes more of these local short trip guides.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just a travel guide
This is so much more than a travel guide. Not only does it tell you some of the best places to eat and stay, but it is just a very good read. The author has a very good sense of humor, and is very well written. He includes lots of history about each city that even many residents don't know about. ... Excerpt: Unita Blackwell (born 18 March 1933) is an American civil rights activist who was the first African-American woman, and the tenth African-American, to be elected mayor in the U.S. state of Mississippi. Blackwell was a project director for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and helped organize voter drives for African-Americans across Mississippi. She is also a founder of the US China Peoples Friendship Association, a group dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between the United States and China. Barefootin, Blackwell's autobiography published in 2006, charts her activism. Unita Blackwell was born on 18 March 1933 in Lula, Mississippi to sharecroppers Virda Mae and Willie Brown. Blackwell's uncle gave her the name U.Z., which she kept until she was in the sixth grade when her teacher told her that she needed "a real name, not just initials". Blackwell and her teacher decided on Unita Zelma. Blackwell and her parents lived in Lula, until 1936 when she was three years old; Blackwell's father left the plantation on which he worked, and fled to Memphis, Tennessee, fearing for his life after he confronted his boss about speaking to his wife. Soon afterwards, Blackwell and her mother left the plantation to live with him. On June 20, 1938 Blackwell's parents sepa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=13793677 ... Read more
